Within this first edition of the Christian Architect, we have attemptedtocapture a degree of that spirit and work, which is our Bible Chair. We hope that it will constitute awhole unit of your memory of college days. For those who have been here two or three years, we hope thatyou will be able to see a shadow of the Chair as it has developed. For these reasons we have included a few pictures from the past years. The name, Christian Architect, is symbolic of the Bible Chair's growth. As the Chair has developed, in a similar manner, we too have grown spiritually. The Bible Chair has served as a training and testing area for hundreds who have worked for Christ during their college days. Through their work, they have learned to 'make a life while making a living.' i Q W Lf... ...,.,.,. M. . ..n.n..L,.4..........p - - 1 53 H - 1 -1-YI 'sw,r51fnzv21,1lY 'wax C----fi fwfr! Interest in the Bible Chair project had been stimulated through the campaigning of G. C. Brewer and M. Norvel Young. Since its establishment the elders have constantly supervised the growth and development of the Bible Chair. Brother Horace Coffman, song leader at the Broad- way congregation, assists the students at the Chair with their singing. Members of the church from Lubbock and sur- rounding areas visit the Chair and participate in the devotional activities. D : v-,- ,,,. Dear Christian Friends, Your lives have been an influence that can never be replaced nor rubbed out. You have not only in- fluenced the students at Tech, but you, by your life that you have lived while here in school, have paid dividends on the support that thousands of people have given to the Tech Bible Chair. May we quote a saying from H. Beecher to describe the influence that you exert. The blossom cannot tell what becomes of its odor, and no man can tell what becomes of his influence and example, that roll away from him, and go beyond his ken on their perilous mission. May I urge you to let the Bible Chair be your Home Away From Home. Never let the clouds of sin keep out the light of God, but always be an example in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, and in purity, If we miss seeing you again on this side of the vale, may we see each other on the upper and better side some day. Sincerely a Friend, 7 3 Goebel Music Carl Spain Mont and Patsy Whitson BIBLE CHAIR DIRECTORS In September 1947, Carl Spain came to Lubbock to be the first director of the Bible Chair. He had formerly been a professor of Bible at Harding College. Through his efforts a firm beginning was established for the work at the Chair. In December 1951, Brother Spain resigned from his work at Lubbock. Mont Whitson, who had just completed his work for a Master's Degree in Church History at Butler University, was selected to succeed Brother Spain. Mont's leadership was a great influence in guiding the Chair to its present posi- tion. In May 1956, Mont moved to work with the College church at A. 8: M. Goebel Music, who had just re- ceived his M. A. degree from Abilene Christian College, was selected to take the directorship. Although there have been three directors, the Christian Architect is mainly concerned with the work of the Chair as it has been directed by Goebel in this, his first year in Lubbock. I2 uhle Tlnaw Developwxevn' In June 1949, the Broadway Bulletin' a.nnounced: The church has rented space foralarge classroom and study within a half block of the entrance to the campus, at 2406 Broadway. This is where Carl Spain began the organized Bible Chair work. During the school year of 1947-48 a total number of 564 students were enrolled at Tech who listed the church of Christ as their preference, and of this number some 110 enrolled in the ten courses of Bible offered. k In the fall of 1951, the Chair was moved back to 2406 Broadway, with the entire building, instead of only one room, at its disposal. Mont Whitson was the director in the new location. In September 1949, the Chair was moved to 2416 Main, where it remained for two years. In 1954, the Fellowship Hal1,one of the major additions, was made to the Bible Chair building. It has served a very useful purpose in recreational and devotional acti- vities of the students who have come to the Chair. When the floor plans for the new Bible Chair were drawn, those interested in the Tech Bible Chair began to V001 idli CTORAGE' BBARY - - I I 0 AEN STAGE STOP-AG: dx! s'xla' wmv ,.,, CD Q l1l nrrcusu H :dx la' 5' N fv- - 1:1 E ... Within the next few years the library will contain ap- proximately two thousand religious books. She began working for Mont Whitson on June 15, 1954, while the chair was located in the old building at 2406 Broadway. When Goebel Music assumed the directorship in the summer of 1956, he found that Karen was an invaluable helper in moving from the old building to temporary 'headquarters' on College Avenue, and again, to the new building. Her work has consisted of avariety of activities: she has mailed the College Christian' each month, taken care of the library, typed and run off stencil work, paid the bills each month, been in charge of the Entertainment Fund, answered the phone, typed all correspondence, exams, and Sunday morning Bible Class material, made appointments for the director, sent our student directories, and greeted all Bible Chair guests. After nearly three years of 'keeping' the Bible Chair, Karen- has found it necessary to resign her position as secretary. She will be missed by all associated with the work of the chair, but especially will she be missed by those students who were constantly stopping by her office 'just to talk awhile . ov MMT We Brooks Mallory Akins Donald Ray Abston Royce Lionel Acuff Jerry W. The various activities of the Bible Chair are channeled through these committees, which are listed below with the chairmen. Devotional Committee - Jim Crisp Entertainment Committee - Glenn Bassham Welcoming Committee - Bill Crouch Personal Work Committee - Pat Linkenhoger Service Committee - Seymour Evans Doug Pummill, Nelda Hill, Keith McQuary, Dick Fletcher, Thane Akins, and Jim Crisp DEVOTIONAL COMMITTEE The devotional committee performs a vital service in the everyday operation of the Bible Chair. Daily except Saturday, there is an evening devotional to God. Although many times this service is quite simple and brief, it exerts an imperceptible but profound influence upon those who regularly and faithfully attend. The devotional committee is en- trusted with the task of adesigjning' and presenting creative and scriptural devotionals so that all worshippers may participate. Chairman - Jim Crisp Co-Chairman - Jim Shearer Secretary - Nelda Hill ENTERTAINMEN1 CUMMITTEE The entertainment committee strives to provide the members of the Bible Chair with pleasant, relaxing activities. It is in charge of Open House, Special Events, Parties, Fun Night, the Palo Duro Trip, the Spring Banquet, and other recreational activities. They are held Monday through Friday at 6:40 p.m. and at 5 p.m. on Sunday. By meeting together for a devotional to God, the students have found that they are able to help fill their need for spiritual food. Attendance becomes habit-forming as the college student awakens more and more to his spiritual needs. Included on the programs are periods of singspiration, seasons of prayer, student talks, and visiting lecturers. Each Wednesday evening Horace Coffman leads the students in worshipping more effectively through song. These few moments of worship add much to the spiritual development of all who will participate. BIBLE CLASSES Bible classes at the Chair are taught by the director, Goebel Music. The courses cover a wide selection of Biblical subjects. Most departments will allow at least six hours of Bible for college credit. In some situations it is possible for a student to take twelve hours of Bible, the maximum number of hours which can be counted toward a degree. BIBLE CHAIR LECTURESHIP Each spring pertinent problems concerning young people are discussed during the 'Bible Chair Lectureship. A capable guest speaker is invitedto deliver the lectures. Hardeman Nichols, the lec- turer this year, is particularly qualified to discuss the theme: 'As A Man Thinketh. Brother Nichols, who has studied at Freed-Hardeman College and West Virginia University, has done evangelistic work in nine states. He has served the Cordova, Alabama, congregation and the Sunset congregation in Lubbock. He is working with the North A and Tennessee church in Midland at the present time. 'I'he Lectureship this year was held April 8-11. In- cluded in the'theme 'As A Man Thinketh' were several topics concerned with 'Our Attitude Toward Life. SOUTH PLAINS BIBLE SCHOOL During each fall semester Christians throughout the South Plains area are encouraged to take advantage of classes taught in the 'South Plains Bible School. Since the school began ten years ago, as many as thirty different churches have been represented in classes which are designed to fit the needs of the young and old alike. The 'South Plains Bible School' was begun at the Southside church of Christ ten years ago. Sponsorship was later assumed by the Broadway church, and still later, by the church of Christ Bible Chair, under whose auspices it has continued for the past five years. This year the school was conducted each Monday night September 17 to November 19. Cecil Matthews Mrs Youn and Ronald Bailey dis- 9- ' gi cuss Courtship and Marriage. After a short devotional, topics of interest to the students are discussed by the panel. The students are encouraged to participate in the discussion by askingquestions. 'Discussion week' this year was February 11-15. The theme was Think on These Things. Included in the theme were: Render Unto Caesar, Courtship and Mar- riage, Know Thyself, and Show thyself Ap- proved. Speakers on the panel this year were: Dr. S. M. Kennedy Dr. A. W. Young Dr. F. W. During the fall, several car loads of students from the Chair visited the Bible Chair at ENMU in Por- tales, New Mexico. Between semesters of this year the Bible Chair moved to Santa Fe for the members to exploit their skiing prowess on the snowy slopes nearby. The only casualties were sprained knees, ankles, arms, etc. While not careeningcrazily down icy mountains or floundering out of drifts, the tired group toured Sa.nta Fe and played games. Sunday, the students worshipped with the congregation in Santa Fe. Once each semester the Chair has an all-day ex- cursion to Palo Duro for hiking and games. The most impressive part of the trip is at evening when the students participate in an 1mder-the-stars' devotional.
