THE SIXTH PRESIDENT Leonard Hall O ' Connell Spearman, son of a Congregational minister and a public school educator, is a native of Tallahassee, Florida. A product of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University elementary and high schools. he enrolled at FAMU in 1944 and. in 1947. received his B.S. degree in Biological Sciences. He received the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Educational Psychology from the University of Michigan. He married the former Valeria Elizabeth Benbow and is the father of three children: Lynn Valeria Spearman McKenzie. wife of Atty Michael Mckenzie, Leonard H. O. Spearman, Jr., and Charles M. Spearman. In his professional career, he has served in both professional and administrative capacities. He has held all faculty ranks as well as visiting professorships in institutions of higher education. Among the institutions at which he has held faculty appointments and visiting lectureships are Florida A. and M. University, Southern University (Baton Rouge), Queens College, Rutgers University, University of the District of Columbia, and Howard University. He has also directed numerous projects relative to the administration of academic support services and developmental programs for minority and disadvantaged youth. Serving for ten years. 1970-1980. in capacities in the federal government, he directed programs and held high-ranking positions in the Division of Student Special Services, the Division of Student Assistance, and the area of Higher and Continuing Education. He has received honorary degrees and awards for meritorious service from institutions of higher education and agencies within the federal government. His research interests and otherscholarly activities have led to his appointment to program development commissions and to publications in his area of expertise.
