SPEARMAN BECOMES NEW PRESIDENT Dr. Leonard Hall O ' Connell Spearman, widely respected scholar, educator, psychologist and educa- tional administrator, was recently named president of Texas Southern University. Appointed unaimously by the TSU Board of Regents. Dr. Spearman as- sumed his post August I. 1980. Dr. Spearman, a 50-year old native of Tallahassee, Florida, comes from a post as associate deputy commission- er for higher and continuing educa- tion in the Department of Education, Washington. D.C. He holds a bache- lors degree from Florida ASM Uni- versity and master ' s and doctoral de- grees in educational psychology from the University of Michigan. Dr. Spearman ' s teaching experience includes service on the faculties of Florida A6M. the University of Michi- gan, and Southern University in Ba- ton Rouge. La. He also has been a visiting professor at Howard Universi- ty and Queens College in New York. He has done postdoctoral work on a National Science Foundation fellow- ship at Wisconsin ' s Beloit College. Dr. Spearman has had an often varied, always distinguished career. Since receiving his undergraduate de- gree at the age of IS. he has re- mained active in the field of educa- tion, as instructor, head of various programs and consultant, among oth- er things. The new president has ten years ' experience with the Federal Government, attaining his latter post in 1978. During his Federal tenure, he received many honors, including the highest awards given by the U.S. Office of Education (Superior Service Award) and the Department of Health, Education and welfare. His HEW Distinguished Service Award cites Dr. Spearman for demonstrat- ing outstanding management ability under exceptional circumstances, and greatly improving cooperation and understanding between the Higher Education Community and the Feder- al Government. President Spearman is a widely-traveled lecturer and au- thor of numerious articles and publi- cations. He also is the recipient of four honoray degrees. Dr. Spearman and his wife. Valeria, have three grown children.
