March 3, 194 . vtith the authorirv to offer courses of higher learning including pharmacv. den- tistrv. journalism, education, arts and sciences, literature, la , medicine and other professional courses. During the summer of 194 . prior to the opening of the University, the State entered into an agreement writh the Houston Independent School District to tjke over the Houston College plant at the present site of the Universirv. In September. 194 . it opened with an enrollment of 2.303 students. The Universirv as established b the 50th Legislature viias originallv knowin as The Texas State Universitv for Ne- groes. ' but the name vi.as changed bv the Legislature in 1951 to Texas Southern Universitv. Undoubtablv this changed occurred as a consequence of a lavksuit brought bv Heman M Sv eatt in 1946 after he vt,as refused admit- tance on racial grounds to the Universirv of Texas. As a result, the legislature provided for an interim and separate lav school in Austin for Segroes. transferring it in Septem- ber. I94S to the now Texas Southern Universirv campus in Houston. Since that time the School of Lav has become an integral part of the University campus Prior to I9 c. the School of Law. vxas housed in Hannah Hall On Februarv 14. I9 c. a nev lav school building v as formalK desig- nated as the Thurgood Marshall School of Lav in honor of this distinguished United States Supreme Court Justice. In I9 3 the Universirv v as designated bv the State Leg- i slature as a special purpose institution. As a result, the School of Lav has established a curriculum designed to meet not onlv the general needs of students but t he spe- cial needs of minority and disadvantaged students. The School of Lav affords its students an opportunirv to pursue a complete and svstematic course of legal studv and to prepare for the practice of lav . Graduates receive training in the fundamental principles of lav , enabling them to practice not onlv in the State of Texas, but throughout the United States. In addition to the traditional legal careers, the lav school provides training for persons who plan careers in business, government, politics, the foreign service, journal- ism, and manv other fields in v hich a knov ledge of the lav is increasinglv necessarv. Special attention is placed upon the legal problems of the poor and disadvantaged. This is accomplished through enrichment courses and the clinical program. The Thurgood Marshall School of Lav is housed in its nev S3 5 million dollar building located at the east end of the Universirv campus The building is a trilevel structure surrounding as open courtvard The lav librar has ap- proximatelv 64. 20 volumes and a se.3ting capjcitv of 217.
