K .% ' :i«„ illllEiiBDii- Texas Southern University is a student-oriented, urban, special-purpose university that offers the master ' s degree in 33 academic and the Doctor of Education degree in four. Graduate programs are provided in the College of Educa- tion and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Communications, the School of Education, the School of Public Affairs, and the School of Technology. Fields of study for the master ' s degree are biology, busi- ness administration, business education, chemistry, city planning, home economics, industrial education, journal- ism, mathematics, music, physical education, psychology, public administration, secondary education, sociology, speech communications, supervision, telecommunications, and theater-cinema. Most master ' s degree programs require 30 semesters hours of course work with a thesis or 36 semester hours without a thesis. The M.B.A.. M.C.P.. and MA. in psychol- ogy programs require at least 48 semester hours. An aver- age of at least B is required in all graduate courses: quali- fying and comprehensive examinations are required in some departments. The foreign language competence ex- amination is optional in most programs. The average full- time master ' s degree candidate should be able to complete degree requirement in twelve months. The MB. A. program requires approximately two years. The Doctor of Education degree is offered in the areas of educational administration, counselor education, cirriculum and instruction, and higher education. Emphasis is placed on the preparation of administrators and teachers for service in urban schools and community colleges. There are excellent opportunities for research into urban educational problems; findings from such doctoral research projects will be useful in planning, developing, and imple- menting programs designed to redress educational prob- lems in the urban community. The doctoral program con- sists of 73 semester hours of credit beyond the master ' s degree. At least 45 semester hours, excluding the disserta- tion, must be taken at Texas Southern University after ad- mission to the doctoral program. The doctoral student who follows the expected sequence of study would take course work and qualifying examinations and complete the resi- dence in the first year; complete course work, professional internship, and candidacy requirements in the examination, and as oral defense of the dissertation during the third year.
