THE STUDENTS OF TODAY FEEL THAT THEY SHOULD BE HEARD. THEY FEEL THEY HAVE LESS TO LOSE IF THEIR OBSERVATIONS ARE WRONG AND MORE TO GAIN, IF THEY ARE RIGHT. FOR TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY IT WAS A YEAR OF PEACE OR AT LEAST THE HOPE OF PEACE. FOR OTHERS, IT WAS A YEAR DOMINATED BY CAMPUS UNREST, TENSION, AND FRUSTRATION. FOR SOME IT WAS A YEAR OF CHANGE AND REFORM. OF ACADEMIC RELEVANCE OR INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM AND A YEAR OF EXPRESSION AT TEXAS SOUTHERN ? ;f AMONG MANY THERE REMAINS A BUDDING FEELING OF CONCERN THAT SUPERSEDES BOTH BLATANT REACTION AND SILENT APATHY. OUR COLLEGE YEARS AT TEXAS SOUTHERN HAVE BEEN AN EDUCATION, NOT ONLY IN ACADEMICS, BUT AN EDUCATION IN LIFE AND LIVING. WE HAVE PROFOUND IMRESSIONS ABOUT THE WORLD, HOW IT IS AND HOW IT SHOULD BE IN THE FUTURE. I ■ ALTHOUGH WE HAVE THE SAME EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES. SAME SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROCESSING. OUR OPINIONS MAY DIFFER ON SEVERAL ASPECTS OF LIFE. tit V THE IMPORTANT THING IS NOT THAT WE EVENTUALLY THINK ALIKE AND FEEL ALIKE, BUT THAT WE ALL THINK AND FEEL. THIS IS THE ONE THING WE HAVE IN COMMON— THE BOND THAT UNITES US. THE FACT THAT TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY IS A PREDOMINANTLY BLACK UNIVERSITY SEEMS TO SUGGEST THAT WE SHOULD BE VERY MUCH AWARE OF THE HARDSHIPS OF BLACKS. THE TERM COLLEGE STUDENT PLACES US IN WHAT IS CALLED THE MIDDLE CLASS . BUT, IF WE ARE MIDDLE CLASS . . . WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE LESS FORTUNATE TJ THE PAST YEAR HAS BEEN A YEAR WHEN THE PHRASE: EXPRESS YOURSELF HAS BEEN USED EXTENSIVELY. IT CAN BE APPLIED TO YOU, IF YOU EXPRESS V ' OURSELF BY REACHING OUT AND GRABBING THAT HUNGRY BLACK CHILD ' S HAND AND 3UIDING HIM AWAY FROM POVERTY. WE WILL NEVER ACCOMPLISH ALL OF THIS WITHOUT O THERNESS. March 3, 1947. The program Administra- tion within the College of Arts and Sciences. The City of Houston provided an ideal setting for the study of business, and the accelerating economic growth of the area helped to stimulate the steady growth in en- rollment within the department. Because of the increasing enrollment, and in recognition of the obligation of the University to serve more effectively the needs of the com- munity, the program was expanded and the department was elevated to division status. Sustained growth of the Division of Business was marked by the continued accleration in enrollment, expansion and diversification of programs, and greatly improve quality of both students and faculty. For the academic year 1954-55, the number of students pursing degrees in the division was approximately 400. or 20 percent of the enrollment of the College of Arts and Sciences. The University soon recognized that the community ' s re- sponse to its thrust in education for business required a separate faculty with its own dean. This decision resulted in the establishment of the School of Business in 1955. The School of Business is housed in an ultra-modern building, which was completed and occupied in the spring of 1968. Among the facilities for carrying on instructions are a large amphitheater, two case-discussion rooms, and large and well-equipped type-writing and business ma- chines laboratories. An attractive and comfortable lounge is provided for student relaxation and study. The primary goal of the school is to provide the profes- sional education essential to those who aspire to positions of responsibility in business, government, education and community service. Such professional education equips the graduates with a broad background of general knowledge and specific skills, an understanding of the social and eco- nomic foundations of an industrial society, skill in the use of decision-making tools, and a well defined conception of the social responsibilities of persons in business. The re- quired courses have been based on these fundamental needs. These courses emphasize the quantitative and be- havioral factors in management: the social, economic and physical environments both domestic and international; and the adoption and functioning of a proper code of business ethics. Special courses provide training in the identification, analysis and solution of practical problems. Desirable personality traits, which for true business leader- ship are stressed and developed through teaching methods and co-curricular activities. Recognizing the demands that leadership makes upon the managers verbal facility, special emphasis is given to the development of the communication skills, both spoken and written. After- wards, in a more relaxed atmosphere, in the Student Life Center, he answered even more questions. . ' The primary objective of the School of Communications is to provide training which, upon completion, will produce students who are critical consumers of communicative messages as well as competent practitioners and research- ers of communication techniques. The measures of this achievement will be: A. the students ' ability to evaluate communicative mes- sages in terms of the reliability, relevance and value of such messages to the issues involved; B. their ability to recognize and utilize those concfpts and techniques (as documented by authorities) usea to in- fluence attitudes and impart information: and C. their eligibility for entry into given communications fields and or accredited graduate schools. The following areas comprise the School: Communicative Disorders offers courses and sequences which focus on language therapy, learning disabilities and hearing deficiencies. Language therapy includes speech pa- thology — the treatment of deviations from speech stan- dards. However, it also enphasizes the perception, organi- zation, and comprehension of varying linguistic events, such as conventional signs and operational rules of English syntax, that insure accurate transimssion of expression. Journalism has as its chief concern training students to gather and interpret information and to write, edit and prepare materials for public presentation via newspapers, photo-journals and magazines. Speech Communications gives attention to such rhetori- cal processes as public communication, to such interper- sonal processes as nonverbal communication and intercul- tural communication, and to such organizational processes as necessitate communicative strategies to define leader- ship, to negotiate positions and to maintain productive structures. Telecommunications offers instruction and practicum in radio, television, and multimedia production, involving a substantial contribution from the University closed-circuit operations and the FM station. KTSU. The curricular pat- tern will provide basic training in the various skills of writ- ing, directing, and participating in broadcasts and tele- casts. Theatre Cinema has as its objective the training of professionals and preprofessionals in drama and in film- making, the latter an area in which minority opportunities have virtually exploded within the last few years. Some areas covered by curricular sequences and practicum are scene design, technical production, acting, directing, the- atre and film management, and film technology. Communicative Disorders. Journalism. Speech Communi- cation, and Telecommunications are housed in the Martin Luther King Humanities Building. Journalism offices, class- rooms, and laboratories are located on the first floor: oth- er offices, classrooms, the Speech Laboratory. KTSU-FM, television studios, and the Multimedia Production Labora- tory are found on the second floor. Theatre classrooms and faculty offices are located in the basement of the Hannah Hall Auditorium. Here also arc the Green Room, the Scene Shop, the Studio Theatre, and storage for props and costumes. A variety of play production styles is achieved by using a number of different facilities, including the Hannah Hall Auditorium, the Music Auditorium and the King Center Auditorium. In addition, the whole City of Houston becomes a labo- ratory as students go into the community for news gather- ing, touring play productions and internships. Graduate programs are provided in the College of Educa- tion and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Communications, the School of Education, the School of Public Affairs, and the School of Technology. Fields of study for the master ' s degree are biology, busi- ness administration, business education, chemistry, city planning, home economics, industrial education, journal- ism, mathematics, music, physical education, psychology, public administration, secondary education, sociology, speech communications, supervision, telecommunications, and theater-cinema. Most master ' s degree programs require 30 semesters hours of course work with a thesis or 36 semester hours without a thesis. The M.B.A.. M.C.P.. and MA. in psychol- ogy programs require at least 48 semester hours. An aver- age of at least B is required in all graduate courses: quali- fying and comprehensive examinations are required in some departments. The foreign language competence ex- amination is optional in most programs. The average full- time master ' s degree candidate should be able to complete degree requirement in twelve months. The MB. A. program requires approximately two years. The Doctor of Education degree is offered in the areas of educational administration, counselor education, cirriculum and instruction, and higher education. Emphasis is placed on the preparation of administrators and teachers for service in urban schools and community colleges. There are excellent opportunities for research into urban educational problems; findings from such doctoral research projects will be useful in planning, developing, and imple- menting programs designed to redress educational prob- lems in the urban community. The doctoral program con- sists of 73 semester hours of credit beyond the master ' s degree. At least 45 semester hours, excluding the disserta- tion, must be taken at Texas Southern University after ad- mission to the doctoral program. The doctoral student who follows the expected sequence of study would take course work and qualifying examinations and complete the resi- dence in the first year; complete course work, professional internship, and candidacy requirements in the examination, and as oral defense of the dissertation during the third year. Graduates receive training in the fundamental principles of lav , enabling them to practice not onlv in the State of Texas, but throughout the United States. In addition to the traditional legal careers, the lav school provides training for persons who plan careers in business, government, politics, the foreign service, journal- ism, and manv other fields in v hich a knov ledge of the lav is increasinglv necessarv. Thurgood Marshall School of Law d The School of Pharmacy was organized as an integral department of Texas Southern University in 1949. Its aim is to provide a means of pharmaceutical education and to supply a broad foundation for the students professional career by offering systematic instruction and special train- ing in those subjects requisite for the successful practice of pharmacy. The primary interest of the faculty of the School of Pharmacy is to develop students academically. The faculty, ever mindful of the changing face of pharmacy, continu- ously study and revise the curriculum to meet the needs of these changes. This is reflected in the most recent revision of the course of study to a patient oriented curriculum. In order to provide student participation in curriculum revi- sions and programs related directly to their welfare, one student is selected from the four final professional years as a voting member of the faculty. Furthermore, faculty meet- ings are open to all students except those where the priva- cy of the individual is involved. Each year the junior and senior classes make an educational tour to one of the large nationally known pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. The School of Pharmacy occupies Gray Hall, a centrally heated and air-conditioned building planned and built for the primary purpose of providing the best possible physical facilities for pharmaceutical education and research in the basic pharmaceutical sciences. The building includes 12 specialized laboratories in pharmacy, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy and pharmacology; hot and cold room; balance room: equip- ment room, conference and seminar room: kitchen: sixteen faculty offices; one pharmacy administration office; three classrooms; and an amphiteahter with a seating capacity of 190 persons which is used for seminars, meetings and con- ferences with combined classes of students. All classrooms and laboratories create a professional at- mosphere of educational growth in the pursuit of pharma- ceutical excellence. School of Pharmacy -V fmOrfllnh Drn« I School of Public Affairs In 1973. in recognition of the involvement of Texas Southern University in the many problems of its urban con- stituency, the Texas Legislature designated the University as a special purpose institution of higher education for urban programming. Thus. Texas Southern University was officially wedded to the problems of urban life and the in- ner city, and to the search for solutions to those problems and a better life for its constituents. A direct result of this designation was the creation, in 1974. of the School of Public Affairs as the focal point for the attack on urban problems. The academic aim of this School is to prepare students for entry into the private and public sectors relating to the urban setting by supplying a broad foundation for the student ' s professional career through a specific and innovative program. The School of Public Affairs, accordingly, offers both un- dergraduate and graduate degrees. At the undergraduate level a semi-professional degree — the Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs — will prepare students for mid-manage- ment entry in the public sector. The academic degree — the Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies — will prepare students for graduate studies or for entry into the private or public sector. At the graduate level, two professional degrees are of- feredi the Master of City Planning (M.C.P.) and the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.). These are professional degrees which will prepare students for entry into the pub- lic and private sectors at higher management levels. A distinctive feature of the undergraduate program in Public Affairs is the opportunity it provides for students to develop academic programs which meet their individual in- tellectual and professional interests. In a private Roast and Toast of Ben Butler afterwards his former stu dents let him have it as they recalled his dictatorial atti- tude about the band he has made famous. REGENT JOE BLADES SPEARMAN BECOMES NEW PRESIDENT Dr. Leonard Hall O ' Connell Spearman, widely respected scholar, educator, psychologist and educa- tional administrator, was recently named president of Texas Southern University. Appointed unaimously by the TSU Board of Regents. Dr. Spearman as- sumed his post August I. 1980. Dr. Spearman, a 50-year old native of Tallahassee, Florida, comes from a post as associate deputy commission- er for higher and continuing educa- tion in the Department of Education, Washington. D.C. He holds a bache- lors degree from Florida ASM Uni- versity and master ' s and doctoral de- grees in educational psychology from the University of Michigan. Dr. Spearman ' s teaching experience includes service on the faculties of Florida A6M. the University of Michi- gan, and Southern University in Ba- ton Rouge. La. He also has been a visiting professor at Howard Universi- ty and Queens College in New York. He has done postdoctoral work on a National Science Foundation fellow- ship at Wisconsin ' s Beloit College. Dr. Spearman has had an often varied, always distinguished career. Since receiving his undergraduate de- gree at the age of IS. he has re- mained active in the field of educa- tion, as instructor, head of various programs and consultant, among oth- er things. The new president has ten years ' experience with the Federal Government, attaining his latter post in 1978. During his Federal tenure, he received many honors, including the highest awards given by the U.S. Office of Education (Superior Service Award) and the Department of Health, Education and welfare. His HEW Distinguished Service Award cites Dr. Spearman for demonstrat- ing outstanding management ability under exceptional circumstances, and greatly improving cooperation and understanding between the Higher Education Community and the Feder- al Government. President Spearman is a widely-traveled lecturer and au- thor of numerious articles and publi- cations. He also is the recipient of four honoray degrees. Dr. Spearman and his wife. Valeria, have three grown children. iM l _ ,:i THE SIXTH PRESIDENT Leonard Hall O ' Connell Spearman, son of a Congregational minister and a public school educator, is a native of Tallahassee, Florida. A product of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University elementary and high schools. he enrolled at FAMU in 1944 and. in 1947. received his B.S. degree in Biological Sciences. He received the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Educational Psychology from the University of Michigan. He married the former Valeria Elizabeth Benbow and is the father of three children: Lynn Valeria Spearman McKenzie. wife of Atty Michael Mckenzie, Leonard H. O. Spearman, Jr., and Charles M. Spearman. In his professional career, he has served in both professional and administrative capacities. He has held all faculty ranks as well as visiting professorships in institutions of higher education. Among the institutions at which he has held faculty appointments and visiting lectureships are Florida A. and M. University, Southern University (Baton Rouge), Queens College, Rutgers University, University of the District of Columbia, and Howard University. He has also directed numerous projects relative to the administration of academic support services and developmental programs for minority and disadvantaged youth. Serving for ten years. 1970-1980. in capacities in the federal government, he directed programs and held high-ranking positions in the Division of Student Special Services, the Division of Student Assistance, and the area of Higher and Continuing Education. He has received honorary degrees and awards for meritorious service from institutions of higher education and agencies within the federal government. His research interests and otherscholarly activities have led to his appointment to program development commissions and to publications in his area of expertise. Nabrit Science Center provides teaching and research facihties for the Departments of Biology. Chemistry. Mathematics and Physicis. The building consists of four floors that contain 137 rooms designed as lecture, labortory, and office facilities. Included in the building is a variety of equipment used in teaching and research. Note- worthy are such instruments as the electron microscope in the Biology Department: spectrophotometers and scintilla- tion counters in the Chemistry Department: and computers and high-energy detectors in the Mathematics and Physics Departments. Since the construction of the Science Building in 1958. A significant number of students have received undergrad- uate and graduate training leading to the bachelor ' s and master ' s degrees. To date, more than 400 theses have been approved by the Graduate School for students receiv- ing degrees in the natural sciences and mathematics since these programs of study were initiated in 1947. Many of these persons continued their studies and received the Ph.D. degree. The science and mathematics faculties have been pro- ductive in research and writing. Be erl Ledbetter representing Brown University presented greetings and an award to Dr Nabrit. Samuel Milton Nabril, Ph.D. Dr. Samuel M. Nabrit, executive director of the Southern Fellowship Fund, is a native of Georgia, hie was born in Macon and received his pre-college education at the Walker Baptist Institute in Agusta. graduating as class valedictorian. He continued his education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, earning the Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1925. That same year he began his teaching career as an instructor of biology at Atlanta University. Dr. Nabrit earned the Master of Science degree in 1928 from Brown University, and in 1932, became the first black to earn the Ph.D. degree from that institution. Dr. Nabrit has had a richly diversified professional career as a teacher, scientist, administrator and am- bassador. He served as professor and chairman of the Biology Department at Morehouse College, and later as dean of the Graduate School of Atlanta University. In 1935. he was elected to the position of president of Texas Southern University, and served in that post for I I years until he was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to membership on the Atomic Energy Commission. Dr. Nabrit has rendered many valuable services to government, educational institutions and foundations. He was appointed to the National Science Foundation Board by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and dur- ing the Kennedy administration was made a Special Ambassador to Niger. He is member of the American Society of Zoologists, and serves on the Board of Trustees of Brown Uni- versity, among others. Dr. Nabrit holds membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and served as the third president of the National Institute of Science, which he helped to establish. In recognition of his many achievements and services rendered to mankind. Dr. Nabrit has been awarded honorary degrees from eight institutions. Dr. Nabrit is regarded by his students as a scholarly, deliberate teacher: one who is patient, but demand- ing. His teaching methods have been designed to develop individual initiative, responsibility and self-reli- ance. Regent Sterling and Mrs. Sterling watch the unveiling of the building ' s new name. The Ernest S. Sterling Student Center TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY The Ernest S. Sterling Student Center is located in the heart of Texas Southern University campus on Wheeler Avenue across from Hannah Hall Auditorium and houses the bookstore, post office, a 1 ,000-seat cafeteria, offices for student publications and organizations and other recreational facilities. The Sterling Center rents available space to the University and community for various activities throughout the year e.g., banquets, plays and meetings. The Center was started in October 1973 and completed in December 1975 at a cost of approximately $4 million. The building contains almost I 15.000 square feet and features an exterior of precast concrete panels. REGENT ERNEST S. STERLING Ernest S. Sterling. Know as the Goodwill Ambassador from the East, started out some time back to tell as many young adults as he could something for their own good. Now, some 34 years later. Sterling has begun to reap some benefits from that philosophy and effort. In November 1980, the Texas Sourthern University Board of Regents unani- mously voted to name the TSU Stu- dent Life Center the Ernest S. Ster- ling Student Center, much to the surprise of Sterling. Sterling, TSU Board of Regents chairman, called the honor one of the greatest things thai has ever hap- pened in my life. It was such a sur- prise. I fell real good about it. Students and higher education are my life, I ' ve always possessed a lit- tle leadership (ability). I ' ve just want- ed to tell somebody something for their own good. Sometimes he appre- ciates it and sometimes he doesn ' t. I ' m just happy, though, around stu- dents. Sterling ' s academic vitae is impres- sive both as a higher education ad- ministrator and volunteer servant. Sterling, an Elgin native, began his professional academic career at Prai- rie View where he provided service for ten years. He then joined the Texas College staff where he re- mained I 5 years. Sterli ng left the academic arena professionally, but has nurtured his love for higher education and stu- dents by his service on the TSU Board of Regents for the past nine years, two of those years, as chair- man. The academician spends his profes- sional time now as chairman of the Board of Directors of National Securi- ty Bank in Tyler, one of only two black-owned banks in Texas. The oldest of 15 children (and his mother is alive and well at 85), Ster- ling received his undergraduate de- gree in Home Economics from Texas College. ' When I first started out (in the field), I was one of four black men in Texas in Home Economics, the 67- year-old Regent said. I had originally been placed in agriculture. But having been born and reared on a farm, that was the farthest thing from my mind. A friend, Mrs. EC. May. who was head of the Home Economics Department then, encour- aged me to major in Home Econom- ics. She told me it was a wide open field After that, the story is history. Sterling ' s complete list of commu- nity and civic involvement is too nu- merous to list. Just to mention a few. however. Regent Sterling is chairman of the East Texas Division of Sustain- ing Memberships: member of the Boy Scouts of America and its Board of Directors. We were impressed with Anthony ' s credentials and the dedication he exhibits. Joe Redmond ' s Dream Comes True Born in Nashville. Tennessee. Joe Redmond first saw Texas Southern ' s football program against Tennessee State as a pre-teen. After a successful college career, as well as a successful coaching career at Central State (Ohio), his dream came true. Anyone who knows him will eventually learn that this above average coach has a program for success that is rooted in his belief in Jesus Christ. So. it is perhaps more divine than chance that he came to TSU when he did. Faced with a lack-luster football program, his influence has been immediately seen, as his players turned a 500 plus season in his first year. But not even they could turn around some financial deficits that will influence the fu- ture of the entire athletic program. Because athletics are not funded by the State, along with some more institution- al problems, the sports program at TSU has been on a nose dive for some time. By seasons ' end he would finish up in second place while leading the Nation in scoring with a 30.5 average. The 6 ' 7 junior also ranked fifth on the TSU all-time rebounding list while placing 24th on the NCAA stats for rebounding. Game after game, Kelly pumped from each corner, dunked and made lay ups like few others in the history of TSU. He also broke his own record for points scored dur- ing a single game by scoring 51 points against Texas Col- lege. For a while Kelly was in a close race with Rice ' s Ricky Pierce and California Irvine ' s Kevin Magee for the Nation ' s individual scoring honors. But as the season got tough. MINISTER FARRAKHAN DICK GREGORY f It is difficult to label the prolific activities of Dick Gregory He became famous as a professional comedian. Presently, he is a recording artist, author, lecturer, actor, human rights activist, social satirist, critic, philosopher and political analyst. He combines all of these roles to serve the cause of hu- man liberation and to alleviate human suffering brought on by ignorance and apathy. Gregory chose a career in comedy at a time when black comedians received bookings only in black clubs and theatres In 1961. he was called as a last-minute replacement at Chicago ' s Playboy Club. He was an immediate sensation, leading to his appearances in all the lop clubs in the country and on major network television shows. And. consequently, he became the man who opened the formerly tightly closed doors of the white-dominated entertainment industry to all black comedians who follows his breakthrough. Having opened the doors of the entertainment industry. Gregory began knocking on other doors. He used his fame as an entertainer, and whatever fortune that fame would bring him. to open the closed doors in the American system, which barred the entr y of any man or woman to the guarantee of full freedom. During the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Gregory participated in every major (and most minor) demonstration for human rights in America. He devoted his time and talent giving benefits for civil rights and peace groups, and other clusters of people devoted to human liberation. And though, ironically, the doors he had opened in the entertainment industry began to slam in his face, Gregory did not compromise with his ideals and his vision of a liberated humanity living together in peace. Gregorys participation in the struggle for human dignity cost him over a million dollars in cancelled bookings, travel expenses and legal fees. He found himself behind prison bars many times, twice serving 45-day sentences — once in Chicago as a result of his daily demonstrations protesting de facto segregation in the Chicago public school system during the entire summer of I96S. and again in the state of Washington as a result of his dem- onstrating with the Niqualy Indians in their demand for full participation in American society. During for confinements Gregory fasted, taking only dis- tilled water for nourishment. In 1954, he ran 800 miles, from Chicago to Washington. DC, to call attention to the problem of hunger in the world today. As of today. Gregory has become one of the most sought-after speakers in America on college campuses. He visits more than 200 colleges annually, and his popularity among business groups is rapidly growing as well. He strongly opposes nuclear power and has said he may run against Senator Ed- ward (Ted) Kennedy in the next election for the Senate seat from Massachusetts. As a recording artist. Gregory has many albums to his credit, including East West, The Light Side The Dark Side, Dick Gregory on, Dick Gregorys Frankenstein, Dick Gregory Alive at the Villag e Gate, Dick Gregory at Kent Sate and Dick Gregory Caught in the Act. Gregory the author has written nine books, including his autobiography Nigger, The Shadow that Scares Me, No More Lies; The Myth and Re- ality of American History Dick Gregory s Political Primer. Dick Gregorys Natural Diet for People Who Eat; Cookin ' With Mother Nature.: ' Dick Gregorys Bible Talcs With Commentary, and Up From Nigger, In recognition of his prolific activities, Gregory has received the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Malcolm X University, Chicago and Rust College in Mississippi and the degree of Doctor of Laws from Lincoln in Pennsylvania. Born in the black ghetto of St. Louis. Gregory became a state champion in track and field while in high school and continued to receive honors in track at Southern Illinois University. Carbondale. He entered the entertainment field and quickly rose to the top, once more becoming a champion in American society. But society ' s definition of success was not in line with Gregorys moral passion. As he once described it. The real champion, I have come to understand, is the man who has risen to the crest of lifes highest purpose — singular and complete devotion to serving ones fellow man. He has ardently pursued his definition of championship by doing the things he does best: Making people laugh, making people listen, and. ulti- mately, helping them understand one another. Calling President Ronald Reagan immoral and saying she holds him personally responsible for the actions in California dur- ing the Civil Rights movement. Angela Davis spoke to a packed Texas Southern University (TSU; auditorium crowd. Davis, who still sports her reddish afro, spoke for little more than an hour and mapped out several points of interest to every- one in attendance. She spoke on black history as being a strug- gle for determination, and a struggle for freedom, and that Ron- ald Reagan has made it perfectly clear that he will set the clock back on the achievements blacks have fought and died for. She continued saying that teenage unemployment, the assault on black institutions, and the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan has got to be stopped . Quoting mainly from Frederick Douglas, the 36-year-old col- lege instructor commented. Unity is the only way to defeat these problems .
