Class Propbecp By VERNON PATE Ten years after my graduatlon ln 1950 fl om the Texas School for the Deaf I declded to I9 turn to the old campus for Fleld Day I was hlkmg along the road ln my khakl clothes as I am a poultry ralser It happened a t1re blew out and scared me almost to death When I looked at the drlver I found he was one of my classmates Jumor Todd He IS now a r1ch man and IS the owner of a ranch ln West Texas He had a lovely wlfe who seemed rather stuck up and a baby g1rl Wlth h1m 1n the statlon wagon Junlor 1nv1ted me to get ln and r1de to our Alma Mater We drove around and admlred the new modern school I was amazed to see our 50 class flower the gardenla growmg on the campus That evenlng our old class was to gather at the Commodore Perry Hotel for a banquet As It was almost flV6 o clock I hurrled to a tourlst court engaged a room and changed 1nto my Sun day clothes I went to a blg new cafe wh1ch was called Marvln s A man came along and asked me for my order I was amazed to see h1m slgnmg H1s beautlful sister served me a llght lunch They talked wlth me about the past I qulckly recog nlzed them they were Ellzabeth and Charles Mel ugm He took me to the bakery next door and wanted to 1ntroduce me to the owner I remember ed hlm as James Penny He owns that bakery and says that he has fifty employees to work for h1m We all talked together for a few minutes Thev were sorry that busmess would prevent then attendlng the banquet As I walked along the court a lovely ladv from MISSOUFI and her husband dr1v1ng a 1960 Cadlllac car stopped to engage a room at the motel We talked excltedly She was Jenme Lee Roach the salutatorlan of our class She sald she IS a hlgh school Enghsh teacher IH M1ssour1 and her husband IS the academlc pr1nc1pal Later we all went together to the banquet at the hotel I met Jackle Ragsdale a beautlful brunette w1th a lovely hat decorated w1th flowers She talked very fast she excused herself In a few mmutes she was back and brought her date to 1ntroduce to me I sald Your boy fr1end IS handsome She thank ed me and saxd she was worklng as an artlst for her frlend and they were golng to get marrled the next day Then we had to flnd our seats at the banquet A lovely blonde Geraldme Coker wearlng an exqulslte evenlng gown waved to me I opened my mouth and sald Coke I notlced her husband was wlth her and I remembered they were sweethearts at school a long t1me ago She polnted to her three children two glrls and a boy Thev looked brlght as thelr mother had been the smart est pupll around the school She sald she helped her husband wlth bee 1a1s1ng and hlS honey busl ness 1n Oklahoma I happened to glance at a pecuhar I00klIlg gentleman and he asked hls w1fe Kathryn Cald cleugh about me She Sald It was M1 Pate hls old frlend Don Sowell and I were happy to see each other and chatted They had a red headed baby glrl whom they had left Wlth her grandmother Don sald he was the manager of a ladles store 1n Dallas Texas and purchased new style clothes 1n New York B1lly Slmpson Ross Adams and h1s w1fe from Tennessee came very late to the banquet We all were surprlsed to see them B1lly Slmpson wore store bought teeth and he sald he was a bachelor and worked as a prlnter Ross Sald he was a housekeeper as he had lost lnterest 1n play mg professlonal baseball when he had fallen ln love He had to stay at home and h1s Wlfe worked as a stenographer for the Federal Bureau of In vestlgatlon Unt1l the banquet was over everyone talked w1thout stopplng The next day I woke up and notlced a fat man w1th a straw hat Donnell Bryan h1s w1fe Maxlne Wrlght and fat tw1n boys as they parked at the court I ran to meet them He shook hands w1th me so hard that my hand became purple about hls blg farm and br1ck house 1n Kansas He works at the gram m1ll there and has a colored man to work on h1s farm The t3Xl drlver came after me to take me to T S D for Fleld Day at the school I notlced a bunch of small klds standlng around a man smoklng a long clgar It was Harry Rlchard Brevard Rodgers and Rose Stoffels were accompanlng hlm Harry boasted to everyone that he got S1 000 each week as a salesman All of them were slngle I learned that Rose worked IH a beauty shop 1n Dallas and Brevard was a wrestler there FIVG mlnutes later a wealthy Span1sh glfl Gracla Gonzales M held out her two year old boy to greet us She Sald her husband was work 1ng and couldnt get off She Sald she stayed at home and took care of her ch1ld We all were eager to be on the f1eld and meet our old teachers and supervlsors A young lady was on the comm1t tee there I dld not know her at flrst Later a young boy aged ten told me It was Wanda Parker soc1al worker at our school She looked at me and left her post of duty She showed me everythlng new at the school and showed her room where she teaches B1ble and teaches the students to be Chr1st1ans Her husband IS a m1n1ster at the Bap t1St Church I enjoyed seelng the Slghts and all my old frlends
