The students of Texas Military Institute. We are making our way through the years that are classified as middle and high school. Many of us are looking toward the future with anticipation as well as a bit of fear. Our high school years are a time of maturing — a time when we can learn of ourselves and others. We are beginning to establish our values and goals for the future. T.M.I. is aware of the importance of maturing and achieving these values and goals. T.M.I. itself has come a long way. It has expanded and is still growing. It offers academic excellence within the context of a Christian community. It is an institution where we are challenged in everything we do to achieve to the best of our abilities. 6 This year the unique situation which exists at T.M.I. has been recognized. A sense of pride in ourselves is apparent. Pride in every branch of our community — the Christian atmosphere, academic excellence, athletic programs, military programs, fine arts, clubs and personal relationships which have been established within the community. Our pride stems from successful, as well as unsuccessful, achievements — a job well done to the best of our abilities. This year’s CRUSADER expresses our pride in ourselves, our school, and our community. 8 9 DEDICATION On behalf of the entire T.M.I. community the 1979 Staff wishes to express their love and appreciation to Mr. Mel Thomas through the dedication of this year’s edition of THE CRUSADER. Mr. Thomas has given the past four years to help better the life of T.M.I. He has unselfishly shared his knowledge and time as a teacher and dorm supervisor; but, more importantly, he has demonstrated the love and affection of a friend. His personal concern and respect for the wellbeing of all those around him, including friends like Buckwheat and Newton, is something very special to each of us. It is with our most sincere appreciation, love and respect that we dedicate the 1979 CRUSADER to our professor and friend, Mr. Mel Thomas. The 1979 CRUSADER Staff 8? 3- FATHER KNOWS BEST The Rt. Rev. Coutros. This year has been a year of pride for TMI. In our seventh year of an optional military program, we, the civilians, are proud of ourselves and of those around us — military or civilian. A Civilian Council, with representatives from each grade has been formed. Its members have been involved in decision making and organization in our community. Our time and effort has been spent to make TMI a better place. It is my hope, as president, that because we have worked together to better our school, those who follow will continue to make the civilian student body people to believe in and people of whom we can be proud. rnx ua Civilians 103 SENIORS 1st — Carmen Samaniego, Christie Chenault. 2nd — Gretchen Waters, Elaine Glasscock, Vera Ayres. 3rd.— Matt Reed, David Bruner. 104 Civilians JUNIORS 1st — Alicia Walldove, Beth Stewart, Trang Nguyen. 2nd — Karen Johnson, Lee Ann Hyman, Ann Maurer, Keith Kirk. 3rd — Thad Foster, Kelly West, Harvey Cunov, Lee Willis. George Rodgers 110 Military This year the Corps of Cadets at TMI tried to meet the goals that our forerunners had set and established by becoming Honor Units with Distinction. Traditionally, the Corps has participated in social functions such as Noche de Luna, Fiesta Week and the Black and White Ball. Activities within the Corps, such as helicopter rides, Camp Bullis and field trips have helped each cadet to broaden their education to better serve them in later life. It is my hope all cadets have gained from their military years and in looking back will feel their years at TMI have been successful. Senior Enlisted Instructor SGM. The Sabre Team and Color Guard once again performed at The Black and White Ball. This year the cadets themselves competed for MacArther Cup points through various athletic and military field days. The Drill and Rifle teams also had a much more active year. FLAG IS RAISED AT REVEILLE. 116 Military COLOR GUARD PERFORMS AT BLACK AND WHITE BALL. The Pass-In-Review on Parents Weekend was a big success. It was the new cadets first opportunity to march as a miliatry unit. Flag raising ceremonies were held this year to bring back some of the old traditions, while trips to Camp Bullis and Fort Hood were held as always. To sum it up, 1979 was an active year for the Corps of Cadets. The prefect system has been revised, and we have made several significant improvements in the dorm such as new carpeting and refurbished recreational rooms. The most noticeable change has been the total abolition of the fish system. This year has provided many needed improvements and we are confident that succeeding years will continue to do so. Everyone worked, not just a few people and I believe it is fair to say it was a group effort: In a group effort we have learned that everyone depends on each other. When one fails we all pay the consequences and when one succeeds we all enjoy the satisfaction. It is my hope that this year’s Crusader is satisfying to the entire community, not just to the staff. There is always room for improvement but the staff has done its best. As Editor-In-Chief I would like to thank the staff and everyone who has helped us. I apologize to those whom we, in any way, inconvenienced in the midst of our creativity. I especially offer my thanks to Father Daunt for his support, encouragement, and prayers, and to Mrs. Jarrett for sharing her creativity, patience, and ability to be a FANTASTIC” sponsor by allowing us to make mistakes so that we could learn. Finally, my thanks to God with whom all things are possible — including this year’s Crusader. Vera Ayres Bottom to Top — Section Editors Kelly West, Elaine Glasscock, Ramiro Trevino. As Editor of the Odyssey, it has been my wish and goal to provide TMI with a newspaper which would entertain as well as inform the student body, alumni and friends of the school. As most already know, when one attempts to publish a paper on anything resembling a deadline with a staff of reporters who must also play sports, write papers and do homework, one finds that the world impossible” comes quickly and constantly to mind. I wish to thank all of the people who have contributed, endorsed or even read the Odyssey. The paper has improved greatly, at least in form, due mainly to Canon Daunt’s help. I also want everyone to know that the staff and editors wish that next year’s Odyssey is as successful as ours was and that they have as much fun printing it as we did. Squad members had to adjust themselves to a new coach, which not only meant a new offense and a new defense, but a new philosophy. Many squad members have spent extra time in the Gym on Saturday mornings working to improve their weaknesses. This type of dedication and intensity was stressed daily. This year’s squad is made up basicaly of underclassmen, as there are only two seniors on the squad. The squad is short in stature and must rely on hustle and quickness. T.M.I. features balanced scoring and has no individual standouts. On defense, both the man to man and zone defenses were used. Basketball 149 J.V. Middle and Upper Schools participate in such activities as pie eating contests, tug-of-war, a visit from the KTFM Fowl, and other unpredictable craziness. Posters were placed around the school for more spirit and greater spectator participation in sports activities. It was an interesting and enjoyable event for all who attended. 75th ANNUAL WEST TEXAS DIOCESAN FUND RAISING The Annual Giving Campaign, organized and headed by Jerome K. Harris, served as a central committee for the raising of funds for the operation of the School. The goal this year was $130,000, which was reached near the middle of March. In addition to the usual categories, 1979 saw the begining of student body participation. This year the Student Body Giving Campaign was formed. The chairmen, Vera Ayres and Kevin Warburton, recognized their goal of $1000 in early April. Mr. Harris and the Campaign members were excited by the prospects of student participation and look forward to a continued Student Body Campaign in coming years. Activities 181 THE PLAY'S TMI revised its Drama Department under the direction of Jim Brandenbcrg. Brandcnberg describes drama as a fantastic means for developing self confidence.” The twenty-two drama students, receiving both fine arts and P.E. credits, performed David and Lisa” in the winter, and The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail”, in the spring. Brandcnberg is enthusiastic about his characters and the dedication the entire cast and crew have thrust into productions and is looking forward to next year. Kevin Warburton I, Kevin Morris Warburton, being known under no aliases, having spent twelve years at TMI am of exhausted mind, similar body and barren soul.
