TEXAS MILITARY INSTITUTE (1926-1976) T. M. I. as we know il today, is 50 years old. (1926-1976) Many changes have come about since girls were admitted lour years ago. These include girls, voluntary military, new chapel, new-head master, new teachers, civilians and more students. 2 3 West Texas Military Academy began in 1893 as a miliu became T. M. I. Now in 1976 Texas Military Institute h INI'. NIW UNIMU4M Living in a Christian Community Rather than single out one particular individual for recognition, the 1976 CRUSADER is dedicated to the TMI community as a whole and to that which makes a TMI education unique and special. As an important asset of the Diocese of West Texas, TMI stands symbolically close to St. Lukes Church and school, and Harold Gosnell, Bishop of West Texas, has served untiringly on our Board. But these facts simply suggest the extent to which the beliefs of Christian living permeate the philosophy of education at TMI. Our newly inaugurated Chapel stands at the entrance of Old Main physically representing the fact that TMI seeks to provide above all a Christian education for its students. With the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as a constant reminder, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to fulfill His high ideals of individual morality within and for a community. It is to this Christian thrust, the fact that Chapel is an integral part of our lives, that we have an active Christian Share Group, and that each student and faculty member is encouraged to create and believe in a Christian environment that the 1976 CRUSADER is dedicated. 8 TABLE OF 15 TOP BRASS GENERAL STAFF PC. Most important, however, is the student body, the group of people for whom the school exists and who really determine its quality. In a very real sense you are Texas Military Institute and you give it whatever reputation it has as a fine school. As president, I am deeply appreciative of your academic and leadership qualities and of the contribution you are making to the life of TMI. I am also grateful for the service you can and will render to both our school and our country in the future after you leave 1 Ml. You are among the most important eauses for thanksgiving during this bicentennial year of the United States of America. It has been an honor for me to have been associated with you for a little while. You have my congratulations and my best wishes for the vears that lie ahead of you. Sincerely, Leonard A. An excellent display of teamwork and team spirit followed the team to all of their games. Also, the Panthers were composed of a young team which should prove to be strong in the future. The J.V. had a very successful season with a record of 5-2 and it will be interesting to see how well TMI will do in the near future. Beginning the first part of the season with a record of eleven wins and one loss, the TMI Panther Soccer team met w ith some hardships, but still ended with a winning record. This year the team hosted a tournament at TMI and ranked 3rd in it. The season was marked by strong rivalry matches against Sl Anthony where crowd participation was at its best. The soccer team ended the season by going to the SPC tournament in f ort Worth where they won one game and lost three—watch out for this team, in the near future they will be champions! This year the team won its first tournament against Incarnate Word and went to the SPC for the first time in three years. 143 The TMI Basketball Team 1975-76 TMI Cagers Have Championship Season Front, L-R; Stewart, Foley, Baxter, Matthews, Moser, Back, L-R; Coach Wilson, Lewis, Brown, I-a ton, Creasy, Copps, Todd, Coach Johnson For the first time since joining the SPC, the Panthers finished as high as co-champion of the South Zone. TMI defeated San Marcos Academy for the first time in 5 years, St. Johns, and St. Stephens to win this honor. The only loss in the zone was to the other co-champ Kinkaid. In overall SPC play the team finished 4th out of the eleven teams, especially proud of the win over Casady of Oklahoma City. This marked the first win ever for TMI over a first division north zone team. Team members are named and pictured above. Overall the team finished 11-17. Members of the junior varsity team were D. Menconi, J. Stewart, A. Morton, C. Oldham, J. Brown, M. Gaffney, and M. Sams. This ten women team, composed of 2 seniors, 2 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 4 freshmen are very enthusiastic about the future of girls sports at TMI due to the success of their first season. The season was rather short, but was a positive start with the hopes of building a stronger team. With this in mind, who could resist playing for the cheering crowd, the male cheerleaders, the great coach, or for the fun and experience that comes from working together as a team? (L-R) S. The CRUSADER has also experienced many changes. Sr. Wills are no longer included on the senior page, and more clubs and sports are covered. Moreover, this annual is approximately 12 pages longer and costs more too. (This last change was not too popular with the office). This year the staff participated in many workshops in order to produce such a complicated layout that we even confused our- selves. Also, we experienced a year with procrastination where each deadline was met with Saturday workdays, aspirins, sleepless nights, and Mike threatening not to develop the film. 1 want to thank Ms. Lewis for all of her ideas and if anyone wishes to complain, see her, she’s the sponsor. Thanks for being so patient with the many picture retakes. Lastly, 1 hope everyone at least has a thrill of finding something unexpected and memorable. 161 The Odyssey ... At times we have succeeded and at times, of course, we have not. Never, however, in recent years has the level of student participation been as high as it was this year. It was a good year for the ODYSSEY. The paper has improved and as always, there is the room and need for improvement. I hope that next year’s staff will insure that the quality of the ODYSSEY continues to increase. 162 Student Council Front Row (I K)—R. l-ewis, K. Warburton, J. Maldonado, J. Dial, C. Langston PRESIDENT—Ronnie Lewis This was the year, the year to put to use those six years of school experience and that year of Student Council experience to create a better world inside TMI. Yet when all is said and done, we’ve done no more, or less, than years past. Still, the year has been valuable as an elevating step toward the ultimate development of our characters. We have each learned a lesson about how to deal with people to help people, a lesson we can never afford to forget. The future will bring change to the Council as we were by no means the best. Yet our intentions were always to help as many as possible. I sincerely hope that we leave behind this purpose as we take it with us into life. In direct antithesis to last year, we have striven to develop a way to express ourselves as a group yet retain that individuality which is the basis of our origin. We have organized, but not militarized, for the mutual benefit of ourselves and the school. To this, we have established a number of groups with a multitude of objectives. We have designed programs from celebrating the bicentennial through the painting of the bleechers, to mastering the sky in our Aviation Group. We have in a sense, been born this year. We will continue to grow, to mature, to experience, and to learn. Windham SFC Wood The Corps Is Here To Stay! The military made quite an improvement over previous years. An enrollment of 120 was very impressive. I believe that most of the JROTC students felt that this year’s program was successful. Although we didn’t always agree, the military students seemed to remain united. By being in the military, cadets were able to go to Fort Hood, Camp Bullis, and the Military Ball. The cadets weren’t always pleased with everything that occurred, but I think they will forever be proud of TM1 and of the military. (j oAe. 172 o(a n otdmy ; LTC Greenberg Msgt. Due to the fact that I am a body with a virgin mind, I do have to admit that I have gone through a lot of hell here, but the education I have received is unsurpassed. For where would one stand in this world if he had not learned to cuss, drink, smoke, skip out, and raise more . . . than imaginable. Truly, a man would be lost without these qualities. Well now TMI it is your turn and all I have to say is thank you. You have brought me many fond memories. If I say it, who will listen? The only people who would listen to what I have to say know it already. Why, then, these paragraphs? As I go, as a last gift to you, I share these words with you. Take them or not as you wish; I will love you all the same: When I came here, I was a savage that needed taming. In the time that I have been here, I have changed, for the belter, I hope. Walter Cline, think and keep on thinking, you are on the right track Jud Waggoman, do not make him a god, but Mr. Rice is one of the finest people alive. He is a good man to follow. Hugh, what can I say? You know it already. We have a perfect triangle: you, me and God. All three of us love the other two. What more could any man want? If I tried to list everybody who has made an influence on me in the last four years, the list would be longer than this book. WTiat else can I say? Go with God, whatever he is to you, and be in peace. I love you all. 223 I, Michelle Lorenz, leave the following rememberances to people associated with TMI. John Parker April 19,1775 Lexington, Mass. | Shortly before midnight, 700 British redcoats, the elite of the Boston garrison, embarked on their historic march to Concord. They were assigned to seize ond destroy the rebels' cache of munitions. King George of England was determined to snuff the fermenting revolt in the Colonies. Before the British hod even left their barracks, word of their secret mission hod begun to spread across rhe land, rhonks to two hord-riding couriers, William Dowes ond Paul Revere. Coproin John Porker was one of rhe people alerted by Paul Revere in his mod midnight gallop. Porker summoned his drummer boy ond ordered him to sound rhe olorm to his brave bond of militiamen foresworn to march or a minute’s notice. Seventy Minutemen came running and formed into two ragged lines beside the rood to Concord to await rhe redcoats. Parker faced his patriotic hornets in homespun ond barked, Don't fire unless fired upon,- bur if they mean to have a wor, let it begin here! They had their war.
