It has particular significance to all who are a part of this school. This is where I started and I thank a merciful God that I am able to come back to the school again. In his autobiography General MacArthur also pays tribute to his Alma Mater. TMI tries to educate each young man who comes here as if he might be another MacArthur. You, the graduates of the Class of 1967, have had the benefits of good teaching, judicious counseling and the thoughtful concern of experienced men and women whose lives are dedicated to developing the potential which you have. In turn, you have given to the school athletic victories, leadership to underclassmen and to one another during the years that you have been here; achievements in forensics; service to the community through parades, the sabre team and color guard groups; a life full of activities, chapel services, classes, drill, a host of significant meanings. As you go out seeking new achievements in college and in your chosen careers, our prayers go with you. May you exceed your PAR in all your worthwhile endeavors. May you too say, with the same significance, when you come back in future years to receive our accolade, This is where I began. Edward P. Droste President Faculty Advisors MR. W. 0. MILLER MR. JOE D. STEPHENS 12 The Panthers fell to the powerful Spartans, but came back with a tremendous recovery in the season opener on September 17. After the Spartans made 12 points in the first half, the Panthers' defense was able to stop their aggression. Phil Christopher, TMI's starting quarterback, was hurt in the first half as he attempted to run a boot-leg play. His replacement, David Fitch, showed great skill and led the Panthers to their first touchdown with a 32 yard pass to Skip Brown. Fitch then carried the ball through the middle for the 2 points. The second half saw no scoring by either team. Each team had several fumbles and neared the goal lines but were stopped by the powerful defenses. In a real heart breaker, the Panthers lost their first game 12-8. TMI 14—ALLEN 10 On Saturday, September 24, a spirited TMI football team traveled to Bryan, Texas, and handed Pre-season favorite, Allen Academy, its first conference loss of the year. David Fitch started for injured Phil Christopher, who had suffered a sprained ankle in last week's game. Allen was first to light up the scoreboard when quarterback, Randy Satterwhite, hit Don Finnell with a 39 yard scoring strike. The Panthers came right back and scored on a three yard plunge by halfback. Bill Helm. The conversion try failed, and Allen took a 7-6 lead into the dressing room. The Ramblers extended their lead in the third quarter on an 18 yard field goal. But the Panthers pushed across the deciding touchdown in the fourth period when quarterback, David Fitch, handed off to fullback. Bill Chiles. Wingback, Tom Brundage, went over for the 2 point conversion. TMI quarterback, Phil Christopher, ran out the clock making the final score 14 to 10, in favor of TMI. 80 McCullough leaps for the pigskin in the Allen game. TMI 52—SCHREINER 0 Fitch carries for a long gain Al Skiles scored on a 70 yard pass interception run-back and Fitch ran 12 yards in the first period. Marc Bruner and Chiles ran two point conversions. Chiles raced 80 yards to score, Bill Helm added the extra points in the third quarter and Phil Christopher ran for the two points. Rick Liese skipped 15 yards to one touchdown, Doug Graham sprinted eight yards for another and Chiles ended the scoring by racing across for the two-pointer. It was TMI's best scoring day since the Panthers whipped Schreiner, 54-8 in 1958. Quarterback, David Fitch, passed for two touchdowns and scored one, and Bill Chiles scored ten points as the Texas Military Institute Panthers routed the Kerrville Schreiner Rebels, 52-0 at Mac-Arthur Field Saturday afternoon. TMI which eventually wound up substituting freely, ran up a 22-0 count after one period. Fitch hit Hook McCullough with a 30 yard scoring pass, Chiles breaks loose for an 80 yard T.D, TMI 30—SAN MARCOS 46 A Determined Panther team traveled to San Marcos on October 2nd to try to secure first place in the Texas Preparatory League. San Marcos scored first with a T.D. by Larry Black. The Panthers came back with an eighteen yard scoring run by Tommy Brundage; the extra point was made by tackle, John Dix. Then TMI was caught off guard by a seventy yard kick-off return by Jimmy Stevens for another San Marcos Academy touchdown. After another San Marcos drive to the goal in the second quarter, TMI came back with six points by right end, Skip BroxMn. The conversion was made by a fumble recovery by center, Nixon Dillard, ending the half. Early in the second half, San Marcos widened its lead by sixteen points with 2 touchdowns. Halfback, Doug Graham, scored in the fourth quarter up the middle, and Tommy Brundage added the two extra points. Late in the second quarter tailback, Brundage, capped off a TMI drive to add six. The game ended, SMA 46, TMI 30, leaving the Panthers in second place in the TPL. 81 Brundage goes over for another Panther touchdown. TMI 12-PEACOCK 6 The most exciting game in the first half of the season took place on Parents' Day, October 15. This game was to prove a cliff hanger till the very end. Each team scored a touchdown in the second period but neither team could make the conversion. In the second quarter, Mike Karr intercepted a pass and raced 43 yards for the first score of the game. Steve Taylor, of Peacock, returned the kickoff for a 75 yard T.D., Peacock's only score of the game. At half time the score was TMI 6, Peacock 6. In the third quarter, the two teams battled with neither side scoring. Late in the fourth quarter, Albert Skiles recovered a fumbled punt on Peacock's 40 yard line. This started the Panther drive for their second touchdown which ended when Bill Helm went in for the last 12 yards. Late in the fourth quarter, Peacock started to move down the field to the TMI 4 yard line where it was first down and 50 seconds to play. The Helm runs back opening kick off with the help of Otero. rugged TMI defense, with the help of a 5 yard penalty, was able to stop the Kadets dead. The Panthers were assured victory when John Dix intercepted a Peacock pass. The final score: TMI 12—Peacock 6. Dix blitzes through the Rambler line. Cullough, on a 35 yard pass, putting the Panthers on the Allen 11. On the next play, Fitch again passed; this time to tailback, Albert Skiles, in the end zone for a score. The aerial conversion was made by Fitch to John Dix, on the tackle eligible play. The third quarter was scoreless, but in the fourth quarter, Allen marched downfield for a touchdown on 5 passes and 5 first downs. But, thanks to a rugged Panther defense led by Joe Barker, Doug Blake, and Bill Kirkwood, the final score remained TMI 16 Allen 8. TMI 16—ALLEN 8 The TMI Panthers moved one step closer to the league-leaders, San Marcos Academy, by downing the Allen Academy Ramblers 16 to 8 on TMI's MacArthur Field. After a first quarter deadlock, the Panthers exploded for two touchdowns within minutes of each other. The first came on a 10 yard run by halfback. Bill Chiles. This was set up by an Allen fumble on TMI's 21 yard line. Ton Brundage, TMI halfback, added the two point conversion on a sweep around the right end. After the kickoff, the TMI defense, which allowed the Ramblers only one first down in the first half, forced Allen to punt. On the first down, quarterback, David Fitch, hit split end, Hook Mc- 82 Brundage makes the conversion. TMI 48—SCHREINER 0 Skiles make it look easy as he breaks away from a host of Rebel defenders. TMI traveled to Schreiner on November 5, to chalk up their second league victory over the Rebels. The Panthers took an early lead when on the first play of the game halfback. Bill Helm, intercepted a Rebel pass and returned it 35 yards for the score. The rugged Panther defense held and during the next Panther series, quarterback, David Fitch, threw a pass to end, Hook McCullough, for a 50 yard touchdown. The defense, which allowed only four first downs and 53 yards total offense, held again with the aggressiveness of such players as Joe Barker and linebacker, Pete Otero. During the next series of plays, fullback, Bill Chiles, broke through the middle and raced 56 yards for another touchdown. Phil Christopher ran the successful conversion. The second quarter was a seesaw battle between the Panther secondary and the Rebels. At the end of the first half TMI was leading 20-0. TMI received the ball in the second half and on the second play from scrimmage, Bill Chiles successfully broke through and went 78 yards for another score. The mighty Panther offense scored next in the fourth quarter when Pete Otero ran into the end zone. Bill Chiles also went in for the extra two points. Phil Christopher found the end zone next on a 13 yard quarterback keep around the end, while special fullback John Cunningham ran the conversion. Praise should also be given to the TMI defense, led by Joe Barker and Pete Otero, which gave the Rebels only 4 first downs and 53 yards rushing. The game ended with the scoreboard showing TMI 48 Schreiner 0. Brown breaks a tackle 83 Chiles gets the ball and scores. KIRKWOOD: The Lone Defender TMI 6-SMA 12 On Friday afternoon, November 11, the TMI Panthers lost a heart-breaking league championship.battle to San Marcos Academy on MacArthur Field. The Panthers, who played the Bears earlier in the season and were defeated by 16 points, made a great try to settle the score. The Panthers, after receiving the opening kickoff began a short drive, but it was quickly ended when Steve Johnson recovered a fumble for the Bears. The Bears went from there to make their first T.D. The point after failed with the score 6-0. The Panthers were forced to give up the ball and this set up the final SMA touchdown, with no extra point. Sensing that it was now or never, the Panthers became more determined than ever and as a result dominated the entire second half on both offense and defense. The Panthers longest drive of the day was started on the 20 yard line after a Bear kick traveled 60 yards into the end zone. Long gainers by backs, Bill Chiles and Tom Brundage, and a 25 yard pass from quarterback, David Fitch, to Al Skiles sparked the triumphant 80 yard march. Bill Chiles bulled over from the one yard line for the only Panther score. The scoring ended right there and as the final gun sounded, the Bears had taken the TPL championship by the score of 1 2 to 6. TMI 6-PEACOCK 14 PMA scored touchdowns in the first and third quarters by taking advantage of 5 out of 11 Panther fumbles. This led to a 14 to 6 upset over the mighty Panther ball club. Although this last league game did not substantially help Peacock, it dropped the Panthers to a tie for second place in the final league standings. Late in the first quarter, the Panthers lost the ball and Peacock picked it up for a 6 pointer with a one point conversion. The Panthers narrowed the gap in the second quarter when Bill Helm sprinted 18 yards for the score. However, the try for the two points was unsuccessful. After this it was a defensive battle with the Panthers backed up by lineman, Joe Barker, and linebacker, Mike Karr. Peacock, late in the third quarter, scored another 7 points and increased its lead. 84 DILLARD Thwarts the Kadets ā€œBā€-Team 1st Row, L to R; Leonard, Palmer, Kelfer, Willis, Miller, H., Graves, Moore, G., Morellf Wood, T., Sommers; 2nd Row; Steves, M., Hinds, Hopkins, Jones, P., Jensen, Liese, Falkenburg, Keck, Berkowitz, Shank; 3rd Row; Bruner, S., West, Gandy, Brunner, O., Underwood, Stewart, Straus, Hammon, Basom, Clement, McCormick, Mgr. ā€œCā€-Team 1st Row, L to R; Duncan, Mgr., Bohner, Flanders, D., McCullough, D., Frandsen, Tippins, Bruton, Whitehill, Singleton, Mgr.; 2nd Row; McCaw, Smith, R. Richards gets set to score. On Tuesday, February 7, the TMI Panthers traveled to San Marcos to defeat the Bears in the most decisive and important game of the season. This game insured TMI at least a tie for the league lead. The win against the Bears gave the Panthers a 6-0 record for league play. The highlight of the evening occurred when Mike Karr scored the basket which gave the Panthers the lead. TMI 46-PEACOCK 60 On Thursday night, February 16, the T.M.I. Panthers suffered their only defeat of the season in league play. Greatly inspired, the Peacock Kadets fought successfully to win this rival match. The Panther's first string was eliminated by the third quarter because of fouls. The halftime score was 22-22. The lead changed hands evenly during the third and fourth quarters until the last five minutes when the Kadets pulled ahead by taking advantage of T.M.I. penalties. The inferior-rated Kadets, in fourth place in league standings, proved.to be a tough group. High scorers were All-Conference center. Hook McCullough with 21 points, and Gary Richards with 10 points. Jones, Mr. O'Neil Ford, the architect for the library, and Mr. Ayres, Chairman of the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees. A view of library construction at the end of the school year, 1966. 152 On Commencement Day, May 22, 1966, the Right Reverend Frank A. Juhan consecrated the ground on which the library was to stand. Construction was already underway. The old infirmary had been removed, and work was being done to prepare for the actual construction and erection of the largest private school library in the Southwestern United States. Following the completion of the interior of the building, the books from the old library had to be transferred into the new building. This was done by the entire student body, which transported the 5300 books in one afternoon. During evening study periods, the cadets make use of the excellent facilities provided in the library.
