A Salute to David R. Scott Major, USAF NASA Astronaut On March 16, 1966, Gemini pilots David R. Scott and Neil A. Armstrong in their Gemini 8 spacecraft achieved the first space docking in history. Major Scott attended the 9th grade at T.M.I. in 1945-46. He has sent this message to the T.M.I. cadets If I could offer one word as a maxim to you students, it would be that of excellence. This includes excellence in academic improvement, excellence in the exercise of self discipline, excellence in the perseverance and accomplishment of each task, and excellence in integrity in meeting every decision. Excellence in these areas will advance your personal growth so that you may arrive at the full development of yourself as an individual, ready to take your place in our complex and fast moving Space Age.” 5

Texas Military Institute San Antonio 9, Texas OFFICE 0f THE HEADMASTER To the Class of 1966: You have had an eventful experience at T.M.I. You have reached academic heights and occasional failure. You have won championships in athletics and have played on losing teams. In your public appearances, parades, T.V., forensics you have always acquitted yourself well. Now you are alumni. You have joined that great group of men who have gone to fame, fortune and success, always grateful for the help, incentive and impetus that came from T.M.I. We know that as you look back through the years, you will have an increasing sense of gratitude for what has happened to you here. May the same success that has redounded to others, from their posts of importance in their communities, in their country and in their world, be yours! May you ever feel that you can return to your Alma Mater, that you can call on your school at any time for assistance, counsel and encouragement, that it will always be another home. When the choice is difficult, may that best, which we have always tried to encourage in you, win! Edward P. Droste Headmaster 7
