We respectfully dedicate the 1966 Crusader to Mr. Richard T. Whatton In Memoriam Ryall Luther White II Class of 1968 October 27, 1950—July 24, 1965 4 A Salute to David R. Scott Major, USAF NASA Astronaut On March 16, 1966, Gemini pilots David R. Scott and Neil A. Armstrong in their Gemini 8 spacecraft achieved the first space docking in history. Major Scott attended the 9th grade at T.M.I. in 1945-46. He has sent this message to the T.M.I. cadets If I could offer one word as a maxim to you students, it would be that of excellence. This includes excellence in academic improvement, excellence in the exercise of self discipline, excellence in the perseverance and accomplishment of each task, and excellence in integrity in meeting every decision. Excellence in these areas will advance your personal growth so that you may arrive at the full development of yourself as an individual, ready to take your place in our complex and fast moving Space Age.” 5 Texas Military Institute San Antonio 9, Texas OFFICE 0f THE HEADMASTER To the Class of 1966: You have had an eventful experience at T.M.I. You have reached academic heights and occasional failure. You have won championships in athletics and have played on losing teams. In your public appearances, parades, T.V., forensics you have always acquitted yourself well. Now you are alumni. You have joined that great group of men who have gone to fame, fortune and success, always grateful for the help, incentive and impetus that came from T.M.I. We know that as you look back through the years, you will have an increasing sense of gratitude for what has happened to you here. May the same success that has redounded to others, from their posts of importance in their communities, in their country and in their world, be yours! May you ever feel that you can return to your Alma Mater, that you can call on your school at any time for assistance, counsel and encouragement, that it will always be another home. When the choice is difficult, may that best, which we have always tried to encourage in you, win! Edward P. Tackle All-Conference T.M.I. 12—ALLEN 6 T.M.I. overwhelmed a last minute threat by Allen Academy of Bryan to save a 12-6 victory over the pre-season favorites on the 24th of September on MacArthur Field. The Panther defense saved the game with one minute left in the final quarter when they halted the Ramblers at the T.M.I. 21 yard line. In the next two plays two Allen passes fell short of their marks. On the final play the rushing Panther line trapped and downed the Allen quarterback 32 yards behind the line of scrimmage. This play was the last hope of the Ramblers but was fruitless and set the Panthers in sole possession of the number 1 spot in the Texas Peparatory League. T.M.I. scored first and last. The Panthers took the lead early in the second period on a 15 yard pass from Hook McCullough to Richard West, after a 24 yard toss from Clark Horton to Mike Cox. Louis Gonzalez put the Panthers ahead in the third period with a 40 yard punt return. The defense held off the Allen team in the last period to leave the scoreboard 12-6 in favor of the Panthers. 80 TMI 6-—Schreiner 6 The Panthers traveled to Schreiner on Oct. 2, to play a frustrating game plagued with penalties and fumbles, which left the Panthers with a 6-6 tie and a tie with San Marcos for the league lead. The Panthers were held scoreless in the first period by Schreiner but nevertheless piled up statistics on a drive which terminated in the early minutes of the second quarter when a TMI touchdown by Louis Gonzalez was called back because of a penalty. The half ended in a 0-0 tie and the third quarter was played uneventfully. In the fourth period a run around left end by a Schreirer halfback stunned the Panthers with a touchdown. TMI settled down in the fourth period and made a 64 yard drive ending with a nine yard touchdown plunge by Clark Horton. The same play was attempted for the point after touchdown but was unsuccessful and the clock ran out with a 6-6 tie on the scoreboard. TMI 7—San Marcos 42 The Panthers were overwhelmed by a powerful San Marcos Academy team on the 8th of October and bounced from first to third place in the Texas Prep. League. The Bears opened the 42-7 rout in the first quarter with a four yard run by the San Marcos quarterback, Richard Penn. The Panthers took the lead for a short time in the second quarter when Hook McCullough tossed to Richard West for a 50 yard pass-run touchdown, and David Fitch kicked the extra point. Before the half ended the Bears boosted their lead to 22-7 on touchdowns by Richard Penn and Mike Bryant, followed by successful conversions by Bryant. When the 2nd half opened the Bears continued their march with an 18 yard touchdown by Mark Rogers and an extra point by soccer-style kicker E. Beloglowsky. The Panthers posed a threat in the fourth period when they moved to the San Marcos 10 yard line, but lost the ball on downs and a penalty. The Bears moved on in the final quarter to score two more touchdowns and leave TMI w’ith a 42-7 loss. GEORGE ADAMS Back TONY ALGARBE Back BAXTER ATOR Back JOE BARKER Guard 81 T.M.I. 26—PEACOCK 7 TIM BASS Guard r DOUG BLAKE Guard The Panthers boosted their loop record to 2-1-1 the 15th day of October when they renewed the oldest rivalry in San Antonio and defeated Peacock, 26-7 on the Kadets homecoming. T.M.I. scored at the rate of one touchdown per quarter beginning with a plunge by Clark Horton from the Peacock two yard line. The most spectacular play came in the second period on an 82 yard pass-run play from Hook McCullough to wingback Randy DeLay. This score cancelled a brief lead by Peacock, which came on a pass from Don Gamer to Ramon Larrios followed by a conversion kick by Tony Abraham. The Panthers opened the third quarter with a 71 yard march which took nine plays. Clark Horton and Louis Gonzalez had runs of 20 and 27 yards respectively before Horton plunged for the score from the Peacock 3. The Panthers rallied again in the fourth quarter following an interception by Tony Algarbe. On the next two plays Bill Chiles carried the ball fifteen yards to the five yard line and in for the score. The conversion failed. Another interception by Tony Algarbe halted a Kadet drive later in the fourth quarter and secured the 26-7 victory for the Panthers. The win left T.M.I. in second place in the T.P.L. STEPHENS 12 Elated by their win over Peacock the previous week, the Panthers went to Austin to meet the St. Stephens Spartans on October 21st in hopes of breaking a 3 year losing streak to the Austin team. With a vicious offense and a stubborn defense the Panthers surprised the Spartans and led at the half 6-0. This was a result of a 70 yard drive accented by long passes from Clark Horton to Skip Brown and from Hook McCullough to Richard West. After West's seemingly impossible catch at the 5 yard line of the Spartans it took two plays before Louis Gonzalez broke into the end zone with a 1 yard buck over right tackle. The Spartans came out after the half and overpowered the Panthers with 2 touchdowns in the third quarter. Capitalizing on Panther fumbles the Spartans initiated drives, one of which was capped by a 5 yard run into paydirt by Mike Bell and the other was topped off by a 3 yard run by Jim Mussleman. Both conversion attempts were foiled by the Panther defense. Both teams failed to score in the 4th quarter as the Panthers received their third loss in 6 starts this season. T.M.I. 0—ALLEN 7 Allen Academy handed the Panthers their third conference loss and dropped them to third place on Saturday October 30 in Bryan. It was an afternoon of frustration for TMI as they were contained at midfield for most of the afternoon by the Allen defense which knocked 6 fumbles loose from the Panthers. Allen quarterback Ronnie Bussie went over for the lone touchdown of the game from the TMI four and,Scott Buie kicked the extra point. The sue fumbles which were lost by the Panthers were the main reasons that kept them from scoring; however they piled up 198 yards rushing and 3 passes that netted 32 yards. The Ramblers on the other hand had less total yards and 8 less first downs, but as the final 0-7 score showed they were able to capitalize on the mistakes of the Panthers who lost their shot at the championship. 83 T.M.I. 6—SCHREINER 9 Schreiner upset the Panthers on the sixth of November at MacArthur Field and dropped T.M.I. to third place in the league. The Panthers took the lead in the second quarter, after a scoreless first period, on a 1 yard drive by George Adams to cap a 50 yard drive. The attempt for the extra point was unsuccessful as Hook McCullough was dropped at the line of scrimmage. Later in the quarter the Schriener offensive halfback, Hank McCormick, intercepted a T.M.I. pass and ran 60 yards for the only Schriener touchdown, which evened the teams at the half. The second half proved fruitless for both teams. It seemed the game would end a 6-6 tie, as had the previous clash between the two teams, until the Rebels kicked a 25 yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining in the game to give the Rebels a 9-6 victory. San Marcos opened the scoring with a 54 yard run by Mark Rogers and 2 point conversion by Mike Bryant in the first quarter. The second quarter opened with TMI in possession of the ball and after holding the ball only one play David Fitch unloaded a 46 yard touchdown pass to Randle De Lay. The conversion was unsuccessful and left TMI with an 8-6 deficit. San Marcos struck again in the second quarter with a touchdown by Richard Penn and unsuccessful conversion again by Mike Bryant; however, the Panthers were not to be slighted and scored on a drive by Bill Chiles. The Bears opened the second half with another touchdown with an unsuccessful conversion, followed by another TMI score by Bill Chiles, leaving the score 22-18. At this point the Bears scored again and the game ended in a 28-f8 victory for San Marcos, which clinched them the T.P.L. title. Peacock won the toss before the game and elected to receive with the Panthers defending the south goal. The Kadets took the ball on the kick off and marched 75 yards in 12 plays to allow Walter Collier to score for Peacock from the 1 yard line. Tony Abraham kicked the extra' point and put the Kadets seven points ahead of the scoreless Panthers. The Panthers faced one of those inevitable low spots in a team’s career and were thwarted by fumbles and injuries throughout the game. With two seconds left on the clock the Kadets scored a field goal and left the Panthers with a 10-0 defeat to close the 1965 season. On Friday, April 29, the first and second TMI golf teams placed first and second in the TPL golf tournament. TMI, Allen, and Schreiner participated. The tournament was played at the Olmos Basin Golf Course and Jim Morell was declared the medalist. The first team is pictured above; the second team consists of Mike Quirk, John Dix, Larry Rosson, and Alston Bein-horn. The total scores were: TMI’s first team, 323; TMI's second team, 357; Schreiner, 359; and Allen, 382. TMI finished second in the TPL Athletic Meet held at Leonard Wood field at Fort Sam Houston on April 30, 1966. Robert Bates (left) was tied for first place in individual scorihg in the meet. San Marcos took first place with TMI in second, Allen third, and Peacock, Concordia, and Schreiner trailing the field. TMI’s chances were lessened by the fact that many of our finest track men were out with the measles and assorted injuries. The TMI Tennis Team, led by General Frentzel, hosted the TPL tennis tournament on April 30. Bob Braubach won the singles championship by defeating Rourk of Peacock 6-2, 6-0. Every TMI entry reached the semi-finals. The TMI doubles team in the semifinals was Joe Haynes and George Spencer. They finally placed second in the doubles division. General Frentzel was understandably happy with the victory although the doubles didn’t come out as well as he would have liked. He thinks that we have a good chance for the same title next year because of the bright prospects in the underclassmen. 98 99 Artihities Crusader Editors Sponsor: Mrs. Willitt Seated Left to Right: Levy, Bardgette, Mrs. Willitt, Bass, Engler.
