O. MILLER CR ADER CHARGE TO THE CLASS OF 1960 Though this may seem to be a logical time to say farewell, I feel that to do so would be highly inappropriate. After all, you, the members of the Class of 1960, are not just a transient part of the life of T.M.I. Rather, identified as you have been through your years at the School and by your many contributions to it, you are well qualified to be included in a lasting tradition which knows no formal parting. The future holds great things in store for you members of the latest generation in the T.M.I. family. Don't settle for anything less than the best, for as ye sow, so shall ye reap. Now - congratulations to the editors and staff of the 1960 Panther - and to all of you, not Goodbye, but Hasta la vista! I -- al 'll .3 11. +1 --' 4. D. 14 Friday, September 11th, was not a lucky day for the Panthers at Austin. The afternoon was hot and Texas School for the Deaf pitted their usual rugged football squad against a weaker TMI team to win over stubborn opposition. The Panthers went down fighting without being able to score, largely because of the difference in experience between the two squads. Only a stout defense prevented the Rangers from making a large score. Sammy Simpson-Back, 2 letters. Dennis Smith-Center, 1 letter. 1, , Simmons stops a Schreiner run. T. M. I. O---ST. JOHNS 20 The Panthers faced St. John's of Houston's heavy line at Leonard Wood Field, Friday night, Sept. 18th. Sammy Simpson, Burris Smith, and john Tay- lor were outstanding performers for TMI, and the entire Panther team did a good jhob to hold their heavier opponents as well as they did. The Panthers attempts to score failed simply because of superior Rebel power, passing, punting and experience. TMI also put up a. staunch defensive battle and held the Rebels from scoring on four tries from the 2-yard line as the game ended. The first fumble set up an 80 yard scamper for St. Stephen's TD, and the second fumble was carried over from the 8 yard line to pay dirt. A spectacular Panther drive carried the ball 70 yards to the one-yard line before it went over to the Spar- tans on downs. The drive was led by Burris Smith er. Barfield, Jr., has initiated a new method of practice which enables two complete teams to practice in the same length of time that it took for one to fire in previous years. The T.M.I. Rifle Team was proud to take Second Place in the All City junior ROTC Rifle Matches. Not only taking second place in the teams but the team had the top aggregate shooter of the city, Sterling Burke, and also the 4th high, Michael Kaliski. Since Rifle Marksmanship, is a Varsity Sport, the members of the team are awarded jackets or letters. The men receiving letters for '59-'60 are as follows: Copeland, P., Burke, S., Kaliski, M., Kleberg, R., Car- rasco, M., and Figures, T., rewarded with reserve letter are: Martin, D.g Boyd, C.g Workizer, D., Ogden, j.g and Funk, I., Mgr. A new innovation was added to the Rifle Team this year. For the first time the team was awarded with a team distinction, in the form of miniature rifles to be worn on the uniform. These rifles were awarded to the 15 top members of the team who devoted a great deal of practice and participated in Rifle Matches. The team, in addition to city honors, won lst, 3rd, and 4-th place in the Hearst 4th Army Rilfe Match Cadet Burke fired high score in the Match with a 192. The team also won lst, 2nd, and 3rd in the Inter- scholastic and Interollegiate 4th Army Match. This entitled the team toi become eligible to place one team on the National Interscholastic and Intercollegiate call Match. The 4th Army trophy has been won by the Team for the third time in succession. The trophy is kept at the school for a year.
