Consequently, we the class of '46, thought it only fitting to devote our Yearbook to this century of progress. During her one hundred years in the Union, Texas has developed from a land with no industry or income into one possessing not only the greatest cattle and oil industry in the Union, but also the plans and the momentum toward another one hundred years which will mold it into as great an industrial state as it is novv an agricultural state. As you turn through the pages of this Yearbook, therefore, We hope they will remind you of the one hundred years gone by and that you Will see in them the history of the struggle to fashion from the Wilderness this vast southwestern empire. Texas Military Institute has had the privilege of training leaders and men of character for Texas in the past, and it will continue to furnish leaders of the Texas of tomorrow. And so the Yearbook dedicates itself to the first one hundred years of Texas in the Union and looks forward to the second hundred with courage -and vvith the blueprints! '35 4? The members of the Blue Bonnet Staff deem it a privilege to dedicate this Texas Centennial Number to J. W. Culver, B. H. Meyer, and W. W. Bondurant, Sr. These men stand among the ranks of honored fathers who have carved from this wilderness an empire. With the courage, hardihood, and moral conviction of pioneers, they have sown into the minds and hearts of countless thousands of their fellow beings, wisdom, righteousness, and noble living. N o greater tribute can be paid them than to echo the words of all who know them: They taught us how to grow. inhalin g ADMINISTRATION I I I, IE1! .!. . . e , WILLIAM T. THE SEELEY SCHOOL HOUSTON STREET, 1886 fArtist's Couceptionb gl may O Q as Q .n . , . 1 UGREATCOAKSTFROM LITTLE .311 6 W -if BOOK ONE Then and Now Away back in 1886, Dr. W. B. Seeley, a Princeton graduate, established a school on Houston Street. That school has grown into San Antonio Academy. The cover drawing is our artist's idea of how the Houston Street school looked. This present volume of the Academy Blue Bonnet celebrates the 60th anniversary of Dr. Seeley's work. The ideals and high concept that he built into his school have been preserved and added to by Dr. W. W. Bondurant and Lt. Col. W. T. Bondurant, who have succeeded him as heads of the school. They manned the ship, upon which beat unavailingly the Waves of uncertainty during the early years of this century. Theirs were the hands that set that ship on the true course of scholarship and character-a course that had been charted by the school's founder, Dr. Seeley-a course upon which the present management is directing the school. wiwmllilllmllll , x ww WWW 0 0 w S 3 1:54 -54 E s-glltguwa .., Z 414 'Xi' ' m, 'W NT Olllo 1 a fllllnmuvuuxxulllllmx SQ AN IONQO KCADEMY X-y E+3:LiQ3: 'T FROM PAST TO PRESENT LT. BOOK TWO Scholarship In 1888 Dr. Seeley moved his school from Houston Street to its present location by San Pedro Park. At that time the school was housed in frame buildings and the campus presented very dif- ferent views from those we now see. The picture on the cover of this section, taken from an old post card, shows the school as seen in 1906. During those early years many things were different around the school, and, boys, it seems we were born too late, for they had girls at the school as an inspection of the following honor roll will show. The watchword of Dr. Seeley's administration was sound scholarship, and this direction has been followed by the school since his time. HONOR ROLL FOR ACADEMY HALF A CENTURY AGO 1895 The honor roll of Dr. Seeley's school for the spring term 118953 contains the following names. In each department the names stand in order of rank. Many students other than the staff helped in various ways. In particular do we wish to thank Mr. C, l. OUR PART To this flag, millions of the oppressed in many lands turned with longing and hope during the war-torn years. To millions this flag came too lateg they had already perished under the heel of the invader. Our flag now flies over many cemeteries in foreign lands-guarding the resting place of American men and Women who died in Freedom's cause. As school boys We should revere our flag and resolve to keep the government, for which it stands, strong and able at all times to meet the challenge of oppressors throughout the world. BOOK FOUR Sportsmanship Fun and fair play summarize the theme song of our athletic endeavors. To win, yes, but S. A. A. and its student group look upon an athletic event as a possible losing propositiong hence it is always fun-Win or lose. Good sportsmanship, clean speech, and a sense of fairness on the playground and in contest games, have each been emphasized for years by Academy coaches. It is believed that such training carries over into the future life of the boys. The boys Will long remember how faithfully Coach Smith worked with them.
