We have worked and played and drilled together, always with but one and the same goal before us. At graduation, the climax, our reaching the summit, will have been effected. It is all like the climbing of a great mountain, one of a series in a range, and in its completeness the range may well be representative of our lives. Let me explain my comparison. Four years ago a group of T. M. I. cadets were stumbling through a dense forest in search of a particular mountain. We arrived at its foot, and there, m-any trails presented themselves. We separated as each climber took the trail that looked best to him. This was the first mountain any of us had ever at- tempted and the going was hard indeed. We stumbled often, and were wholly afraid of the massive, domineering trees as they swayed in the breeze and seemed to whisper things about us. For a year we climbed through their thick- ness, cautious of every step, and always fearing the tall, foreboding trees. Finally we assembled at the One-quarter line and exalted in our supremacy of the first year. As we looked out about us, vision was a bit clearer. We felt greatly superior to the new group, just starting down at the bottom. The going steadily became easier and our greatest pastime was looking back at those below us and snickering. Then, we reached the half-way mark. We stopped to rest a while and when we were about to resume our climb, we noticed that some of our original group had not yet arrived, and too, there were some whom we had not seen before-ready to climb with us. The third stretch was the most pleasant yet. The heavy forest had thinned considerably and we could see for many miles around. Since we were now old hands in this climb, we knew just which trails to follow, and many of us were led to shady nooks beside a tumbling waterfall or brook. Here we could stop and reflect-an ideal spot to publish our Panther. Others of us, with a gift for marching up the mountain in excellent style, were rewarded with stripes. Then came the three-quarter mark and the end of the timber line. 561056 an k x f 'X .1 ggwpg 51555, ,ggQ.u Ill I gt , 1- Vw fgiiql- J-'s'. m we Nmri-gall i t 6 B Illk g Wlmateaa w.:uunnnullllluluvm ...will A at--n., K., lla! A 1, at--A IQQEFM s Ja R. . 5 V X ' r ,Q-.14-.3 And now on the fourth, the last part of the climb, we are getting higher and higherg the view is more extensive than it has ever been before. The im- pediments are less except for the steepness. f'Buttons have replaced the stripes g and stripes have gone to new climbers. Our trail has led its fol- lowers to another nook of reflection where the Blue Bonnet might well be created. All the trails meet at the summit where in a few days we, the Class of 1933, shall come together for the last time. It will be wonderful to realize that we have mastered those trails, and that we have received such sagacious counsel from the wise ones along our paths. Our four-year climb has been in an in- vigorating and inspiring atmosphere, with the heights always before us. It has been the sort which inspires moral courage and character. When we have reached the summit of T. M. I. we must set our pace for even higher and steeper peaks in the range of the world beyond. As we leave T. M. I. we leave behind our sorrows and mistakes, taking with us only those truest friendships, the richest experiences, and the benefits that have so boun- teously been lavished upon us. ' -J. Scenes, occasions, and in- cidents remain very vividly alive in our minds. Time and time again, we relive those happenings in our day dreams and wake with a start, realizing that they are only lingering memories ...... It was the first day of school, and in between greetings and salutations and handshakes, we were classified under the supervision of Profs. Meyer and Culver, Prof. J. D. Miller and Prof. Shaw gave us our books. This year there was a new figure in the office to do the inspecting. Capt. Lynch was the com- mandant, taking the place of Capt. Henion. Sergeant Earl issued the O. D. uniforms, and amid the confusion and general hubbub so typical of an opening day of school, the fish wandered rather blankly from one room to another. A few weeks had passed and the entire battalion formed a part of the bleachers for a league football game. More weeks went by and more games were witnessed. The spirit was marvelous as every man attended all the games and cheered and supported the team constantly. No wonder the yell-leaders' pants got torn and the megaphones were thrown into the clouds, at the last game of the league. T. M. I. had won every game and the ball had not been once carried over our goal line. The coaches did splendid work and the team itself, with its bull-doggedness in putting the very best that it had into the game, was repaid more than just materially. Shortly after, came the annual Mexican Dinner, which Dr. Bondurant gave for T. M. I. The football team had been privileged to bring dates, and with several clever speeches and jokes the dinner was thoroughly enjoyed. Armistice Day was at hand and with it T. M. I. appeared in the parade with white gunslings and white gloves. Following, the second squad of the second platoon of Company A won the annual squad competition, and the second platoon of Company B won that of the platoon. Studies became the most important factor of the school life now, with the exams just around the corner. Unlike most corners, this one did materialize, finding us all cramming. Those of us who worked diligently were rewarded with two weeks of Christmas holidays, and those who didn't were rewarded anyway. We were back again, fresh for a new start, and ready for quite anything the Profs. might teach us. On the drill field, however, Sergeant Shokes had come to relieve the kind and patient Sergeant Earl. With the former came the new armory, the indoor rifle range, marked improvement in the rifle team, and the inspection of the Battalion by Major Kimura of the japanese Army. Meanwhile, Pappy had set a pace for the Zeta Sigma Literary Society of upper classmen, which kept them busy and interested in debating, bringing to the surface in the end four fiery graduation debaters, little short of Webster in their ability. The junior Society, known as the Alpha Lambda Sigma, spon- sored by Prof. Levy, was developing some very convincing speakers and de- baters. This year, Major Hathaway inspected the corps in the Federal inspection. as 23 as I U 3 SY3'o'w3l?2l Q1iX VN J---'fl waat.'f-e Nami-gill 'I 6 P lllamadgf 1 t, ,lWlMu:mga.:usunmmlnnrullivizntenzlll m l, - ...F ill',..g ,. 1vi.i..' ' h 4 , I gtk- , ' ,L -95 This differed from preceding inspections in that there was a sham battle which, along with the other events, received the rating of Excellent, Attention was focused once again on examinations, this time, those of the second term. Like all exams, they stirred up a certain amount of worry and discomfort, which Were penetrated and soothed only by cramming. It had been about this time of the year when seven new names were added to the membership of the National Honor Societyg Capt. Lynch had promoted a drum and bugle corps, the new rifle range was dedicated by the Class of '33 to the school, and Col. Castle fired the first shot, Coach Landgraf entered the baseball team in the city league, and Panther Field was converted into a fin- ished baseball diamond, parallel to any in the city. Coach J. D. Miller and his tracksters had brought considerable glory to T. M. I. The most conspicuous winning was at the Fort Worth Meet. Sixteen medals and one cup came home with the team. Stern faces, blue coats, white slacks, white gloves and gunslings, a snappy cadence, sharp commands: it was Field Day! Panther Field was a scene of pomp and splendor where Company A won the cup in the closest competition ever staged, and the rapid succession of events provided an afternoon of thrills for the spectators. Fiesta week came tumbling out of the calendar, and in the Battle of Flowers parade, our battalion, a symphony of blue and white, made a lasting and an enviable impression. It wasn't long until the Graduation Parade made a graceful closing chapter to our book, The Year's Drill. The last weeks of school found us all extremely occupied, with a thought for that letter in track or baseball, or for the graduation debate or speech, or the final exams, or perhaps, where the coming fall would find us. All work this year, that has pertained to the P. M. S. and T. and its branches has been especially interesting and successful in no small measure. That de- partment has undergone a change in its personnel and with the splendid work these men have done, what then will be the result of their work when they have become thoroughly familiar with T. M. I.? After the Graduating Dinner came the Graduation Exercises, and as we sat there on the stage, there were blurred eyes that regarded a blurred di- ploma. Was that document to be exchanged for four years of fun, friendship, and diligent study? Did it mean that we were standing on the threshold of manhood itself? However, there was one question that did not arise: we knew that we had received the best and most complete instruction available, through the faculty of T. M. I. -J. Uplift thy tiny heads. We come to pay our homage To thy royal flowering beds. Be first to welcome spring-time, In her gorgeous robes enshrined, For thou art the most honored, Of all the flowering kind. Far o'er the verdant prairie, Where the sky so softly bends, There nods the bright Blue Bonnets, And sweetest fragrance spends. Blue Bonnets! Blue Bonnets! Thy charm we still relate On canvas and in poesy, Loved emblem of our State. -N. H. HARRISON. An inspiration-an inspiration for faith, courage, and honesty-that is what the bluebonnet typifies to me. lndeed, to the first pioneers of Texas, when the bluebonnet, symbol of Spring, made its appearance, it must have seemed like a message sent from Heaven-a promise for bounteous days to come. The winds that blow over Texas prairies and through the fields of blue- bonnets seem to echo the fame of bloody Alamo and of San jacinto's glory. All true Texans love and adore the bluebonnet, just as they honor and cherish the memory of those glorious leaders who gave their all in a successful attempt to establish the freedom of Texas. Our school annual has fitly been called The Blue Bonnet , for the name itself is inseparably connected with the great deeds and happenings of past days in Texas, the greatest State of the entire Union. It should be our honor and our duty to carry with us the inspiration of the Texas bluebonnet-to rise to greater and ever greater heights. -WILLIAM N. The Zeta Sigma Literary Society started the year off very successfully. Everyone was willing to participate in the debates. The debates were executed with unsurpassable vigor and industry, which resulted in bringing their excellence far above any anticipa- tion. Many a lVebster and Bryan thundered out with ponderous words and brilliant eloquence, bringing out his arguments so thoroughly that his listeners had no alternative but to be agreeably convinced. The Society provided some very interesting programs for the student body. These programs were heartily welcomed by the whole school. These special programs were brought to an end in April by the annual Declamatory Contest. Too much stress cannot be made in expressing the gratitude of the members of the Society for the noble assistance which Professor B. H. Meyer has rendered to the aspiring orators of the Society. The Alpha Lamba Sigma Literary Society has enjoyed another successful year. This Society has made wonderful progress under the guiding hand of Professor L. M. Levy. It has established a thorough foundation in public speaking for the members of the Freshman and Sophomore Classes. Its success has largely been due to the election of efficient and conscientious officers. any n-r- ve- -as-s-1--+I'-14--1 l , ' ' All vii' IF!! lava--'vvf -'rv' 2-'lifilillllll I lies- ,..g.i:-.revs-Q-will-'12-'QNZZP w - Ihlbei-3-:Meissen n I5 v ill WA .Hfmvmagwaunuulillllnlllmmlll . -4-2222 5, A sw f'-. fi ., I 4 L! , Sirk-Q 4.2.-,' gin' I lglll! . - QQ 6 A N , - 'A Q .-.V xx if L , 1 X I I f My .I Y,.. . , S' Mg,--1 .-- 4 -wifi: Q . .lv P N . 5 5, B'ANDER5ON F J'C.H I2 GRAHAM THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Often claimed as the highest honor that can be bestowed upon at cadet, a membership in the National Honor Society forms a high and coveted goal to attain. Versatility is the keynote. One must not only possess character, but scholarship, leadership, and service, also. Due to the relatively small student body and the high scholastic rating the T. M. I. Chapter of this Society is very exclusive. This year the active membership of the Society consists of nine cadets: two of them, Robert Graham and Ben Anderson belonged to tl1e Society last year. No election takes place to determine the members of this Society. The students ale observed from day to day in the regular course of their work and those having the above-mentioned qualities to the highest degree are selected by the faculty. To be eh gible at student must be a Junior or a Senior and he must have been in school at least a year before the time of his appointment to the membership of this Society. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY B. YV0l.FI2NlSl'IIHl,N7, L, ---:4Qs:--- One of the highest attainments possible for a cadet is to have his name in- scribed on the roll of the Honor Council. This society is composed of the boarding cadets, who have proven themselves outstanding by their high qual- ities of character and leadership. The purpose of this society is to act as a medium between faculty and student body, to investigate infraction of regulations, to foster a higher moral standard, and to maintain student discipline. Boys can feel free to go to any member of the Honor Council and be assured of assistance, knowing that their confidence will be respected. T. M. I. cadets have come to look up to the Honor Council and well they may, for in this branch of student life the road to better citizenship is begun. if 33 if -,Af I ,os gqyf f Y bnlgigyds ,739 Nr X ik I N ,Q-RIIIQQWQ gal' 'I Ill ffivllffY15'y1v-?,y,3:,5g.:?:,-??.:sgigU Qinlimastfzwl as wibifrlllft it 'qlllwma .agwkzfsazarmtxzw-F: I '---rl ' Eli'-X Q.: 13 P Ill -1 ffl 1 ': ' TTHSYA .. . : -af X 1 is. After graduation he attended the First Officers Training Camp at Ft. Snelling, Minn. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant on August 15, 19175 two years later Capt. Lynch was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant. In 1920 he was promoted to the rank of Captain. Capt. Lynch served overseas during the World War with the 350th Infantry of the 88th Division, which saw active ser- vice in the Haute-Alsace Sector, and Meuse-Argonne. After the Armistice was signed, Capt. Lynch was assigned to the 23rd In- fantry of the Second Division post of the Army of Occupation, returning to this country with the Second Division, and was stationed in San Antonio in 1922- 1923. Capt. Lynch attended the Infantry School, and returning to Ft. Sam Houston was assigned to the 23rd Infantry. He served- here until 1926 when he was ordered to foreign service in the Philippine Islands. He returned to the United States in 1929 and was assigned to the 26th Infantry at Plattsburg Barracks, N. Y. While stationed there he served as Adjutant for the 26th Infantry. Capt. Lynch married a San Antonio girl in 1920, and they have four boys. Captain Lynch was detailed to T. M. I. in the summer of 1932, and showed at once that he knew how to handle boys. ln addition to his success as P. M. S. 81 T., he brought about, maintained, and increased a school spirit that has fol- lowed our teams to their respective victories. He is always a conspicuous figure in the bleachers whenever and wherever T. M. I. may be. This versatile Skip- per would be more than an asset to any school. What a break for us that he is with T. M. I., and we hope for years and years to come. -....g4Q5g..... SERGEANT FRANCIS M. SHOKES Sergeant Shokes was born in Charleston, S. C. He was educated in the public schools of jacksonville, Fla. Sgt. RIFLE TEAM For the past few years T. M. I. has had rifle teams of which she can justly be proud. This year's team, under the new leadership of Sgt. Shokes, did nobly against some of the best teams in the country, though they were greatly handi- capped by lack of practice due to the inclement weather, which often made firing on the outdoor range impossible. This, however, brought about the con- struction of the new indoor rifle range which was completed too late to be of much advantage to this year's teamg but with the new range and such pomising material, we expect big things of our rifle team next year. The best of luck, Sgt. Shokes. ac 43 as M l'?i ' :g.. i 'f ':: V qi '- 11 , 1 -- swear is IHIl 1Ml Nw E iA lima sn. , M . M-ullggl ,' F mgillsr.--4. .1 6 W 5 I fr AI I ll ll 1 W -.. 54? 9?' Worth Fat Stock Show they placed second in the Prep. School class. It showed great merit to do this because the field of competition was drawn from the best schools over the entire State. In addition to the second place, T. M. I. men brought back a total of sixteen medals and one cup. Our relay team has never been beaten, even when against such strong teams as those of the Luling and Edison High Schools. In obtaining all of these victories the work of several men was notable. Showing special ability in the hurdles, Bob Graham and jarvis jones almost consistently won first and second places. Graham was practically always the high point man due to his noteworthy prowess in all classes of field events. Another outstanding field man was john Hines who could always be depended upon to win a second or third place in the shot put. In the sprints T. M. I. had no single star, but a group of men, who together formed one of the best relay teams in this part of the country. This group includes Dimaline, Goodwin, jones, Lockman, Ortega, Graham, Gillespie, Chaffe, Larkin, and Neese. The results of the meets in which T. M. I. has participated up to April 20th are as follows: February 25. Relay meet. T. M. I., 4 events, Edison, 2. March l. Relay meet. T. M. I., 4 eventsg Edison, 2. March 3. Full track meet. T. M. The truth of these words was more than verified by the radiant faces of the old boys who were back promptly on the 14th of September, ready to face another year of hard work. The novelty of the opening days soon wore off, the new boys forgot their homesick- ness, and found a new home in the school of their selection. Work, play, and entertain- ment became a part of our daily routine. We soon learned that in the performance of our daily duties lay the secret of happiness. Under the paternal guidance of Dr. Bondu- rant, more familiarly called Prof. B., we came to love the school, and we looked forward to the big events that were to happen in the course of the year, Looking back over the calendar, we find that the first event of importance was a supper at the Original Mexican Restaurant, an annual affair, and always enjoyed. Football, king of sports, held the attention of the boys until Thanksgiving Day. We are proud of the showing our teams made under the able coaching of Prof. Pearce. What boy does not love a holiday? What boy does not look forward to Thanks- giving Day, the homecoming day for the American people? Back again after cramming ourselves with turkey and cranberry sauce, and a taste of Home Sweet Home , we settled down for the exams NVith the examinations behind us, visions of Santa Claus, Christmas tree, and fond parents beckoned us once more to the dearest place on earth-Home. New Year's Day was here before we realized it, and that meant sad farewells to all the dear ones at home, and back again to school. Work sweetens life , and we were happy again in the midst of ou1' activities at the Academy: books, debating, basketball, drilling, and so on. Before We were aware of it, XVashington's Birthday was upon us, and as good, citizens we put books aside for a day. Right upon the heels of this holiday came Texas Independence Day, the Fourth of July for Texans. Spring, that season given over to the poets and dreamers, was ushered in with all her beauty, and right behind Easter with the glorious Alleluias. By a happy coincidence Fiesta NVeek was heralded on the following day amid the sound of whistles and bells, and the gaiety of a care-free people. The culmination of this most colorful week of the year for San Antonio was reached o11 San Jacinto Day, called Battle of Flowers Day. What a gala day for the Academy boys! Didn't we make a big showing in the big parade of that day? After this week of festivities and colorful parades. we settled down once more to our daily routine, taking a deep long breath to make good on the final lap. Lieutenant Bondurant, headmaster and commandant of the school, put the final touches on our military training, Prof. Roe was busy with debate1's and orators, whipping them into shape for the Commencement program, Profs. Barrett and Pearce put the boys through some extra drilling in their respective subjectsg and Prof. B. was right behind us, urging us on to complete well what had been so well begun. All too soon Commencement Day dawned. The flag fluttered to the breeze for the last time, kind Words of encouragement were given us by our beloved teachers, and with the final words of the valedictorian the year of 1932-1933 came to a successful close. -Fimxcrs MEYER. Swimming in San Pedro Pool, just across the street from the school, was a daily diversion during the fine fall and spring days. Aside from the organized sports, the boys fell back upon many old-fashioned school yard games and invented quite a few new ones during the year. San Antonio Academy entered the Bexar County junior Conference this year, competing in every sport for the first time. The Conference is made up of eight different schools and offers competition to the schools in football, bas- ketball, track and baseball. The contests are spread over three classes, AH, HB , and C , and thus every boy is given an equal chance of winning a place on a team. The football season opened the second day of school, when a large number of candidates reported to Coach Pearce for the first workout. Old men around whom Coach centered his team were: Ayres, A., Gillespie, Estrada and Urban. The teams quickly got into shape and entered the Conference games in both UB and CH classes. Although somewhat outclassed by lack of B men, the teams gained val- uable experience in these games. The high spot of the season was when B held the strong T. M. I. team to only three touchdowns. The victories that were XTSX 670 g'QSQ Sy, , I x Iwrsyzz-599 I N F9 II I U?.i1?,,. 4 ' - ' VCT .1 ,I I- - ' I I... ' 1 I uv-... '-S- fEl'7' ...nl . The team was runner-up for the city championship in the C division. A majority of the squad was out of the fifth and sixth grades so that a foundation for next year's team was laid, and with Dyer, Downie, McCullough, Ayres, j., lettermen, and Davis, Werner, Judd, A., Lynch, C., Sellinger and Gra- ham expected back, a winning team is hoped for next year. The second day after Christmas holidays, practice began in basketball with many candidates reporting. With Estrada, Urban and Dyer, lettermen from last year, Coach Pearce soon whipped into shape promising teams in UB and CH classifications. The high spot of the season was when C beat St. Ann's 8 to 4. The teams played other games but were not so successful in them. Then track started, and we had two track meets. The first was with T. M. I., in which we won the l00 yd. dash with Dyer coming in first and Dodge third. Then we won the shotput, C classification, due to the good work of Moeller and Clinger, who took first and third places. Then at the Bexar County junior Conference at Edison, Dyer came in second in the 50 yd. dash. Next came baseball, still in process of writing history. With Downie, Dyer, Gillespie and other experienced players as a nucleus it appears that Coach Pearce will soon have a peppy team on the diamond.
