They have personalities of their own, quite different from what the editors intended and different too, in a half-human way, from the personalities of those who live and love in their cubby-holes. We have chosen magazine titles for the theme of our 1953 Tiger because they illustrate humanly and vividly the varied personalities, activities, and student life in our school. We, the annual staff, hope that this book will preserve for you the memories of all the personalities you hold dear at Texas Senior High School. MRS. H. B. LOOMIS Dedication The moving finger writes, And having writ, moves on. This quotation has lefta lasting impression upon the minds of young people who have graduated from Texas Junior High School during the past five years, but the lady who quoted it had left an even greater mark upon the minds of these young people. Mrs. H. B. Loomis has an outstanding place in the school clay memories of the T953 Seniors, for she was the sponsor of this class when it graduated from Junior High in 1950. Recently the moving finger has written the name of Mrs. Loomis in the book of gold, the finger moves on, but her memory still lives and will live forever. The annual staff of 1953 lovingly and respectfully cledicates this annual to the memory of Mrs. H . B. Loomis. Message Graduation for one of the finest groups of young men and women I ever knew - and the beginning of a new career in education or in business for them. The next week the Tigers, who were ready for anybody, bounded back to take Little Rock T9-14. The game was climaxed by a 35-yard run by Bowerman with one shoe on! The Bengals, still going strong, defeated the Forest High Lions and the Tyler Lions 37-I9 and 20-O in that order. In the next game the Myersmen fell into aslump when they lost to Highland Park 20-0. Costly fumbles accounted for a defeat at the hands of the Gladewater Bears, 26-7. The Tiger attack really clicked as they shattered the confident Longview Lobos in a bruising 33-'I4 victory. The Bengals stayed in the District 4-AAA race when they downed Kilgore 20-6. The Tigers spoiled Marshall's homecoming by mauling the Mavericks 33-6 in a classic that resounded throughout the district and scrambled the race into a three-way tie. Bobby Jester called the best game of his career that night. The Myersmen swamped Nacogdoches 42-0 in the Turkey Day tilt. Little Brooks Fowler repeatedly gave the tailback misery as he rushed from defensive end. Throughout the season the great Tiger line was sparked by Neil Martin, Don Burnsed, Thurman Fish, Charles Moore, Louis Mathis, and Bobby Lee. Having been elected to represent the District in the State race, the Bengals easily took the Bi-District title with a win over Denison 28-7. At Denison Alan Trimble really went wild, scoring all four touch- downs. The next week the first Texas High team to reach the Semi-finals hita stone wall against Breckenridge, whowon 34-7 and went on towin the State crown. The Tigers ended the season with 8winsagainst4losses. Summary Because of a long football season, the Tigers were not expected to go very far in their basketball. Although the Tigers had been out only three days and Arkansas had been out two weeks, they made a good showing . After three warm-up games with New Boston and Hooks, the Tigers District Cham s played their first conference game against Longview. They played a OPP0nen tight game to the last until Don Bowerman sanka free throw in the last Arkansas twenty seconds to cinch the game. New Boston In the last few seconds of the second game with Arkansas Bobby Jes- Hooks ter came through with a charity toss that won the game 4l-40. Hooks. The Tigers edged Nacogdoches by two points. il-ongvlew The game with Gladewater was also a close one but the Bengals Arkansas came out on the wrong end of the score. New Boston The Bengals tried hard against Kilgore but fell before aspirited team irnlncogdocnes 48-55. To lose one more game would put the Myersmen out of the dist- kcllndewnfer rict race. 'kK'l9ore The Tigers recovered the next week when they licked Marshall 57- kMn 5nnH 48 l ' Longview The second game with Longview wasa tough one that had to be won knlncogflocnes in an overtime period, Barry King came through in the overtime period kcalndewclef to ice the game with a free throw. 5Kll90'e Nacogdoches offered little resistance on the Bengals' home court. fMc'fSnall The Kilgore boys looked good--and were, but the polished Tigers Puffs calmlywent out and control led the backboard most of the night. Charles :urls arms Purtle led the Tigers scoring with l7 points. As the clock ticked off the last exciting seconds of the Gladewater game, blonde Barry King sank the winning set shot. Carter Williams dropped in 35 points.while Bobby Bledsoe held the Big Marshall scorer toalmost nothing. There were few games in which Carter made less than 20 pointsl 'Conference Gam The Paris Wildcats won the last two out of three Bi-District games with the Tigers.
