DORIS cARLow AND PAT I-IUGI-IES, Distributive Education Cooperative Part-Time Distributive Education is one of the Vocational subjects offered in Texas High School, to bridge the gap between school and full-time employment. It prepares students to earn a living and trains them for advancement intheir chosen careers. In this program the public schools and business institutions cooperate in training youthg the schools provide training directly related to the distributive work of each student, and the employers give the youth specific training on the job. A group of students under the direction of Mrs. Allen, Coordinator, are shown re- ceiving classroom instruction. CALVERT Business Managev' of Athletics SUMMARY OF 1947 SEASON The Texas High Tigers began the Season on September 1st, 1948, with 10 lettermen re- turning from the previous year. ' The first game was with Sulphur Springs there on September 12, with the Tigers win- ning 40-O. Next came the Stephen F. Austin game on Sept. 19 here, with the Tigers winning a 6-0 mud battle. Orange was the next team to go down before the Tigers, 33-7. The first district game of the year saw the Tigers lose their first game, a heart-break- ing 0-9 loss to Longview. The next four games were all on the win side, the Tigers de- feating Tyler 19-13, Gladewater 13-6, Marshall 7-0 and Henderson 33-12. Another mud-battle, this time with Kilgore, res-ulted in a 0-0 tie. Then on Thanksgiving day, the Razorbacks of Arkansas High were defeated for the first time in four years, and by a score of 40-7. 3 ' The season of 1947 shows a record of 8 wins, 1 loss, and one tie, one of Texas High's greatest Football years in many seasons. 1 Also, for the first time in the History of our school, one of our players was chosen All- State. This great honor came to Billy'Burkhalter as Fullback on the team. He lettered 3 years in Football, 2 years in Basketball, and 1 year ea.ch in Baseball and Track. Besides being a great Athlete, Billy was the Valedictorian of his Senior Class, of which he was Presidentj Texas High is proud of Billy, as well as the many other fine Athletes of the past years. When Billy first reported for football, he weighed only 123 pounds, but he had Aan am- bition to be a good player. He had the heart that it takes to go. Summary of 19474948 Basketball Season Beginning the 1947 season with 4 lettermen, the Tigershad a big job cut out for them to defend the District 11AA championship which was won the year before. The Tigers competed in 3 tournaments during the seasa.on, winning the Mt. Pleasant Tournament, placing 2nd to Crozier Tech of Dallas in the Kilgore Tournament, and winning the Nacofgdoches Tournament for the second consecutive year. Joe Jones and Ted Asimos won all-tournament at all three of these. The Tigers won the District Championship for the second year in a row, winning 11 games and only. losing one game to Kilgore. They had the best offensive record, and also the best ,defensivelrecord in the District. The Tigers were defeated twice by Lufkin in the Bi-District play offs.
