Their tremendous effort paid off, for although the Stings did not score they held the third rated team in the State scoreless. The Rebels expected very link ' trouble from the Slings, but soon realized that the Texas City bunch had been greatly underestimated. Tlie Stingarec s|)irit was raging and the boys were ready to make their bid for the 12-1 A ( ' li;nii])i(Hislii|). 200 Texas City —18 vs Smiley — Texas City had no trouble in beating Smiley of Houston in Stingaree Stadium. The running of Maurice Mascarro paid off with a Sting touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. The next offensive effort started at the Sting twenty yard line. Mascorro tried the center for a gain of three yards, then Mike Drake threw a pass to Ken Gritta at the forty and he ran the. rest of the way for a touchdown. The attempt by Drake to pass for the extra points failed. In the last quarter, Drake intercepted a Smiley pass and ran fifty yards for the third Stingaree touchdown of the game. JIMBO DEGGS EDDIE DAHL 201 Texas City 7 vs Bay town 16 The running of Maurice Mascor- ro and a spectacular touchdown catch by Ronnie Smith were the bright spots of the Baytown-Texas City game. Taking charge following the kick- off, the Stings were in control until the final pe- riod. The air-minded Stings used the pass play only six times during the game, but completed the one that counted as Jack Strange, who had just re- turned to the lineup, hit David Hart in the end- zone for a touchdown. To start off the action the Trojans and Stings traded the ball back and forth. South Houston scored three times in the second quarter. After the Stings ' rude awakening in the first half, they came bounding back to play the catch-up game. Texas City showed that fighting spirit when Strange hit David Hart and Wyatt for a total of 34 yards and ran the ball himself for 9 more, only to have the drive run out on the Trojan 17. As the game endfed, the South Houston Trojans marched off the field with a victory. The Sting- arees rated as the underdogs in the contest, held the Exporters sroreless for the first quarter. The only bright spot of the game came midway in the final period when Mike Casey, Mike Drake, Jack Strange, Maurice Mascorro, and Doug Wyatt pooled their efforts along with every other member of the Sting ball club, to bring the ball down to the Shipper 15 yard marker before the drive fizzled out. 206 fi. - — Hl ' (li Ti 1 .. ,., JERRY THOMPSON All-District 2nd Team Texas City 18 vs Ball High 27 In a very exciting game, the Ball High Tors outlasted Texas City to score a 27-18 win in the evenly matched contest. The Stings and Ball High failed to move the ball on their initial series in the game. Mascorro started the push with a 21 yard scamper and later plunged over for the score. After two attempts, the Stings failed to secure the extra points. The Tors evened the count midway in the second quarter in a 62 yard drive. The turning point in the game came when a Tor intercepted one of Mike Casey ' s aerial endeavors. Two plays later Tor quarterback Mike Hoover sneaked across for the score and the kick was good. On the final play ? ' jr i of the first half. Deer quarterback, Dale Thorpe, attempted to pass, but he faded too deep and Allen Wilken- feld shot through in the end zone for a safety and 2 more points to give the Stings an 8-0 halftime lead. Looking ahead helps a company to grow wisely. We know that as we build our future we are helping to build tomorrow ' s world. Exploring for oil on five continents, producing oil or gas in 22 states in the U. S. and two other countries, we are developing a great natural resource. Our three U. S. refineries and two partly owned plants in Europe transform crude oil into useful products. Thousands of miles of pipelines move our crude oil and refined products where they are needed. And selling our products through 3,700 Marathon service stations in the American midwest, plus hundreds more in Italy and West Germany, helps to supply the motive power that keeps the modern world on the move.
