Seven League Steps Over 86 Years From its humble beginnings at Thorp Springs in 1875 Texas Christian University has developed into one of the largest universities in the Southwest. Starting with three buildings and 15 students, the University has grown over the past 86 years to its pres- ent proportions. Sprawling over 143 acres, the campus now sports 27 major permanent buildings, and enrollment has burgeoned to over 8,500 students this year. The University's endowment now stands at over 55l8,000,000. This includes gifts from the Burnett Trust and the Daniel Estate as well as the twin million dollar en- dowments for Brite College of the Bible and Harris College of Nursing. Today a visitor's first impression of TCU is its physical size and aspect. On the fol- lowing pages we have tried to capture this first impression along with some of the other elements of college life which constitute the spirit and atmosphere of this expand- ing institution.

To A Kind Friend, We Dedicate Dr. Samuel Newton Gaines' retirement in june of 1958 marked the end of 33 years of devoted service to Texas Christian University. In 1924 Dr. Gaines came to TCU as chairman of the physics department, and with the excep- tion of a year's leave of absence to complete work on his doctorate, he served the University until his retirement. During Dr. Gaines' long and fruitful career as a professor of physics, he started many stu- dents on interesting and successful careers in science. His jovial mood, genial manner, at- titude of sincerity and dedication continues to influence all who know him. To his students and to his fellow workers Dr. Gaines has been a help and inspiration. Students, faculty members, friends and tele- vision audiences will remember his cowboy ballads, and the warmth with which he sang them, the warmth and humility so characteris- tic of this great man. It is because of his intense interest and de- votion- to TCU and the teaching profession that we, the staff, dedicate the 1959 Horned Frog to Dr. Samuel Newton Gaines.
