I am aware of the many hardships and sacrifices involved in this extended operation. Since January of this year youhave been s focal point of our nation's interests in the Middle East, In the face of many difficulties and a constant state of alert, the professionalism of all personnel involved has been of the very highest order. The activities of NIMITZ, CALIFORNIA and TEXAS have been closely scrutinized by all Americans for over four months. To many you are the manifestation of our country's strength and determination in the face of a most difficult situation, I know your reception in Norfolk will be in keeping with the high esteem in which you are held by your fellow countrymen.
