FROM COMMANDER IN CI-IIEF PACIFIC COMMAND The outstanding performance and dedication of the members of the Nuclear Power Battle Group during the current eitended deployment to the Indian Ocean is noted with pride and appreciatlon The officers and men of the NIMITZ CALIFORNIA and TEXAS through their responsiveness perseverence and acknowledged readiness over their four month extended deployment to the Indian Ocean have made a significant contribution to peace and stability in an area ofthe world that has become incrmingly vital to our national intermts While Im sure that the Iranian hostage situation and instability in the Middle East still weigh heavily on their minds as it does on ours it is tliroulgh dedication and strength in the face of hardship and sacrifice such as that displayed hy the Nuclear Power Battle Group that we continue, to reaffirm our national commitment to the area The professionalism of those involved is especially commendable and reflect the richest tradition of the United States military service As the Battle Group nears the end of its deployment, please convey my congratulations and admiration and well 'done to all concerned Admiral R L J Long U S Navy FROM THE COMMANDER SEVENTH FLEET During the past four months of demanding Indian Ocean operations NIMITZ CALIFORNIA and TEXAS have set many endurance records and accomplished a number of flrsts More importantly you have convincmgly represented the ready strength of the United States to deal with threats in a critical area.
