Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1984 volume:

2 On title page: Heather Franklin, Miss Texas A I for 1984 and 1983 queen Carolyn Scherry. It's a dog's life at ADPi Playday, but the real dog (Lars) sleeps through it. Opposite: Billy Horak paints “EX” on Kim Oldham’s cheeks during Derby Day cheek-check. Students Joseph Uglindeko, Elizabeth Garza and Robert Njoku enjoy the nice weather. James Davis and Allison Taylor at the ADPi Christmas party. Above: “The Bacchae” chorus members; 1983-84 cheerleading squad and Haus Jordan, Peter Aubin, Dominic Corona, Morris McClendon and Lester Orr getting ready to play softball. 3 Student Life Registration kicks off the Fall Semester Above: Stan Meador and Robin A lan is wait until it’s their scheduled lime lo register while Coach Tad Harris and Debbie Robledo register students upstairs in the SUB for PE classes and Stephen Demarais advises Ag student Ray Hinojosa. Op- posite left: Duane Reber exhibits strange study habits; Rene Sanchez and Byron Driscoll flip through an old annual; Paul Huffcnberger roars off into the sunset and Lee Evans kicks back and talks to his girl. 4 The food is awful; the friends aren’t Dorm life is always loud when you have to study and always quiet when you’re ready to party. Someone else always gets to the washing machine before you do and a 3 a,m. meal is impossible to get. For all this, dorm life is a memorable experience that is best captured by the overstatements about the food and the unstated friendships that evolve from loneliness and develop into lifetime relationships. 5 6 College life offers more than simple solutions; it gives friends, craziness and commitments From left; Campus Security comes to the rescue with jumper cables; Cherie Malin and Colette Dames study during their free time, while Troy Hollan parties during his. John Harris gets decorative with his toga; “Yes, Jesse Galvan, we're taking your picture.” Scurvy and the Ricketts entertain at Arm- strong Station and Randy Greiner shakes hands with Marion McClendon after their tennis match. Students in the ROTC Color Guard present the colors. 7 Students study, work and relax in the campus library and SUB Academics is the main purpose of any school so at Texas A I more library space and all-night study lounges are being constructed. However, breaks are necessary too, so the SUB offers video, pool, ping pong and pinball games in the game room and daytime television and nighttime parties in the Pub. Having money to spend is helpful, so student jobs on campus are made available by the Personnel Office. 8 Opposite right: Burt DeLaCruz does his homework in the silence of the library and Yvon Bryan and Mohammed Zare-Mehrjerdi discuss engineering problems. Tired of school work, Traci Rieger and Laura Fuentes flip through the latest fashion magazine, while across campus in the bookstore, Romiro Guz- man earns some money working. Top left: Daytime tv is usually tuned to music television, but at noon these students eat while watching “All My Children.” Ty Gardner rocks out to the bleeps of track and field, Becky Huebner and Shelly Romanos concentrate on chess and Trey Smith and Joe Crayne play pool. 9 Agricultural College teaches life fashion; P.E. teaches fitness Top right: Humberto Salinas learns about plants from Ag professor Leo Bailey while other students study in the Aggie lounge. Drusilla Lomas begins fit- ting her dress as Carol Gonzalez irons pieces of hers. Opposite top left: Students jump rope for heart; Paul Hum and Stace Hayward “work on their tans, and a scuba diver improves his technique. Lily Salazar goes for a strike and Ruby Garza, Letty Ramos, Pat Davila and Michael Thomas head to class. 10 Getting physical seems to be “the thing” to do these days. How to shape-up slogans are blasted at you from everywhere — the radio, television, movies, books — Everywhere! What’s so new about telling people to get physically fit? P.E. teachers have been trying to pound the exercise syndrome into my head for years. I don’t like to run unless it’s early dawn, early evening or midnight. Running any other time in South Texas is like sticking your head into a very warm, muggy oven. Swimming is great, but not indoors. Lifting weights would probably be good for me, but who has the time to go into the gym and learn how? Bottom line: You get physical; I’ll stay me. Editor’s note. 11 Business and Engineering keeps the world in action while liberal arts keeps us entertained and relaxed With the recent establishment of a core curriculum, controversy arose over students wasting their time and money in classes outside of their major areas. However, this argument is answered by better rounded students who know not only how to construct a business or building, but also know who Shakespeare is and how to enjoy the arts. 12 Opposite top: Melvin Machayo starts home while another student struggles with his computer program. Future engineers Santiago Zamora, Ida Flores, Keith Hutson and Cathie Hagan attend lab in the old building while a new one is being constructed. Above: The death scene from “The Bacchae.” John Bat- chelder lakes a break from his engineering classes to learn the pottery skills Lavonna Butter already knows. 13 Clockwise: Roy Gonzalez plays his French horn loud- ly and clearly. The Javellna band marches onto the Field followed by the pep squad, The band forms a triangle during the Homecoming half-time show. 14 This year was the first time that Texas A I had three male cheerleaders. These guys took a lot of flack from more macho” men {who failed to show the student body their own acrobatic ability and spirit), but still performed their best along with the six female squad members. Cheerleaders from 3rd row left are: Nathan Prieto, A1 Saldana, Michael DePudyl, Patti Braun, Voncille Harper, Liz Jalbert, Laura Martinez, Gracie Hinojosa, Linda Garcia, Linda Leyba and Velma Rivas. Cheerleaders work hard creating unique routines and keeping spirits up 15 South Texan staff reports campus news Dr. George Steinmeyer advises the Student Publication staffs and in his spare time teaches history. Linda Gonzalez manages the newspaper's advertising that pays the printing costs for stories reporter Cynthia Hayden (left!, editor Sarah Coalson and Sports editor Tom Guerra write. 16 Not shown are staff members Sharon Taylor, Kathy Trevino, Cyndi Moreno, Patrick Washburn, David Fasci, Karen Cumberland and John Harris. Left to right: Models David Guy, Cynthia Dorn, Linda Brooks, Jim Gross, James Jennings and Traci Meador watch Julie Herrington showing sports wear. Gaye Harris models a casual outfit, while Julie’s back out in an eve- ning gown. James Jennings returns to the stage after showing his part of the 1984 Spring fashions for men. Alpha Kappa Alpha holds annual campus style show 17 Activities Sigma Chi Derby Days is a week of activities for sororities and little sister organizations that climaxes at events and ends when awards are presented at the Derby Day dance. Proceeds from the dance go to the Sigma Chi's national philanthropy, Colorado's Wallace Village for children with a minimal amount of brain damage. 18 Opposite page left: Tau Delt Carol Gonzalez is crowned Miss Derby Day for 1983. Participants and supporters watch the Derby relay, and coaches Mike DePudyt, Hec- tor Vera, Richard Morganroth, Charlie Leon and Bobbie Brown ham it up during the Dec-a-Sig event. Top left: Zetas Sherri Standridgc and Vonette Weber get ready for the egg roll; Sammy Gutierrez looks bemused as Heather Franklin models her Sigma Chi cut-out swimsuit, and Charlie Leon performs a strip-tease act. 19 Homecoming ’83 is a weekend of fun Alumni attending Homecoming ’83 kept busy by attend- ing alumni meetings, playing golf and attending dinner, pre- and post-game parties, During the day, the surrounding area was invited to a large tent-covered, outside festival that featured booths of food, art and other creative works and lots of fun. Above: Muna Sahtout and Jack Souihers campaign outside elec- tion boundaries by pinning “Vote Muna” tags on passers by. A student votes while Rita Polk campaigns with friends Walter Kyles, Charlotte Ciriggs and Steven Mayberry to help her out. Opposite: Students, alumni and area residents spend an en- joyable afternoon at the fair. 20 21 22 Opposite: The Javelina Marching Band performs a unique half-time show preceding other Homecoming activities. Snorky and the squad cheer for the team after Gina Gwosdz, 1982 Homecoming Queen, crowns Muna Sahtout. Muna and escort Ben Trep- tow listen as the Greeks cheer for their winning can- didate. This page left to right: Student’ Association President Paul Daily and 1982 queen Gina Gwosdz stand with the 1983 court: Debbie Olivares, first runner-up, Muna, Alicia Chapa, second runner-up, and their escorts. Coach Fred Blyle adjusts Willie Edward’s shoulder pads before sending him into the game and the crowd watches as intensely as Roy Pena communicates the game’s action to those in the press box. 23 SWT Bobcats beat the Hogs twice in one season Clockwise: The teams tine up and land in a dog-piled tackle as fans, President Billy Joe Franklin and 1983 Miss Texas A I Carolyn Scherry watch from the stands. Team members Mark Miller, Kent Bednarski, War- ren Polk, Greg Wright, Jesse Jones and Tommie Williams watch what’s happening on the Field; and Neal La Hue carries the ball to a hoped-for- touchdown. 24 Fall Carnival provides fun for students and raises money for groups The Student Activities Board not only handled booth set-ups, tables and chairs for the Fall Carnival, but they also brought in live entertainment in the form of juggler Robert York (top left). Booths included the cake walk sponsored by the Pre-Law Socie- ty, horse races and the traditional jail. 25 Heather Franklin wins 1984 crown as Miss Texas A I This year’s pageant coordinator Allison Taylor created a lively and well-run show. For the opening number, contestants were intro- duced after dancing to a jazz tune, and while they changed clothes for swimsuit and evening gown competitions, the audience was enter- tained by Craig Karges, a professional mentalist and illusionist. 26 Pageant contestants for 1984: Grade Alvarez of Harlingen; Monica Bradshaw and Heather Franklin of Kingsville; Shelby Flanagan and Grade Franco of Corpus Christi; Rosalinda Gonzalez of Sinton; Lori Hillmer of Orange Grove; Christina Jennings of Sugarland; Debbie Kay of Refugio; Shannon McKeown of Port Isabel; Diana Paez of Laredo; Michelle Pokrass of Brownsville Lynette Welker of Houston, Opposite: Debbie Kay, Grade Alvarez, Linda Gonzalez, Lori Hillmer and Diana Paez step to the music in the opening number, then come out for the swimsuit competition. Carolyn Scherry takes her last walk as Miss Texas A l, and Gracic Alvarez waits to hear who will be the new queen. Mistress of Ceremonies Maureen O'Brien watches as Master of Cercmonices Craig Karges (professional mentalist and illusionist) elevates a table without touching it. This page: Heather Franklin becomes the 1984 queen and her reaction and that of the other girls sur- rounds the larger photo of the new queen with Carolyn and first runner-up Shannon McKeown. 27 Groups Compete at Playday Playday is an event sponsored by the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority where the guys compete in various fun events instead of the girls. This year, the sorority invited non-greeks to participate in a separate division and compete against the fraternity men for the title of Mr. Playday. Groups that took part in the fun included the Ags, ATOs, band, Delts, Kappa Sigs, Lambda Chis, ROTC and Sigma Chi’s. Awards were announced at a Pub night the same day where the ADPi's made a profit of $280 that was donated to their national philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald Houses. Winners were: Greek events — Kappa Sigs, non-greek events — Ags, and Mr. Playday which went to ROTC’s Nathan Prieto. Clockwise: John Harris helps Karen Cumberland with her makeup and Debbie Mathis screams that she could have done a better job in the coaches’ lip-stick-smear event. Greeks fight over the ice bucket as the music stops in this version of musical chairs, Opposite page clockwise: The Delts tug against the Kappa Sigs and lose while the Lambda Chis beat the Sigs and the Ags struggle against ROTC. Scott Gilbert and Roland Perez peel and eat a banana without using their hands; and Mr. Playday con- testants line up to answer a question. (Nathan Prieto, the winner, is stand- ing second from the right.) 28 29 30 with their four-posters Clockwise: ‘I think 1 should reconsider my position ’ says Ana Martinez as the Kappa Sigs prepare to race the Lambda Chis (who made sure that their bed wouldn't fall apart this year), “And they're off1 as Rusty Yeager pulls the gun trigger. The Sigma Chis prepare to race the ATOs whose little sister Sonja Hammock was peacefully reading a letter just a moment before. Little does she know that this year it’s the bed she’s on that will fall apart before the turn. 31 Is Greek Week fizzling out? Is it financially inflated? Opposite page clockwise: Workmen put in new underground lining, paint crosswalks and put information on the SUB marquee. ROTC men take a long survival trek while the Computation Center's watchman keeps his lighted eyes on things. 44 45 If s a dog's life, In Los Angeles there's a used car salesman (who got his start in Corpus Christi) whose commercial commercials always begin, “Here’s Cal Worthington and his dog Spot.” However, he’s never used a dog in any of his commercials. On these two pages, we do. Proud owners and their dogs on this page include (above) Hugh Liekc. (above right) Carol Alexander and Mark Scott with their dog Lowenbrau and (below) Rucger Yeager by himself and with his owner Rusty — trying to get Rusty’s beer. 46 Above: Mad Dog enjoys his owner’s company whether Dr. George Coalson gives him a history lesson or just a lot of attention. Below: Another very loved and spoiled puppy is Rocky shown here with owner Jack. Jacobs, his “Daddy 1 and Allison Taylor, his “Mommy.” A usually well-behaved pup, Rocky can’t resist chewing on shoes and socks, loves fried chicken more than dog food and likes to cuddle up on Jack’s shoulder when it’s bedtime. oy, don’t we wish it were? Lars Seifert (above) believes in comfort so m uch that he went into Stuart Campbell’s room and destroyed a pillow just so the pillow would be given to him to lounge on. Lars knows how to get what he wants, for instance he knows that if he gives his owner, Carl, his paw when Carl snaps his fingers, that he can then chew on Carl’s hand. 47 The Best Cartoons of David Fasci S oV your new roGfftcK+e v lm noT kg K SttV Sa«A a wofd Since X mC'J A i rv, New Roommates, Aggravation, and heavy expenses Registration rKat class Is no longer ayoAMe , eJ foUSt 5+ich Into Untroducitoft, , . Kimberly Taylor Photos by Arturo Iimc.n Jr, 135 EL Rancho This space is fspecially dedicated to alt of the people who don't appear in this book. The strain on your eyes reading this is very similar to the strain I went through trying to convince you to at least have your class picture taken. Well, thanks ta this space you can show your grandchildren this page, point to this box and say. See. there I am! Right: Photographer for the Spring semester, Robert Straiten. Relow: Editor Kimberly J. Taylor. Not shown: Cindy Alvarez photographer for the Fall and part of the Spring semesters and Dr. George Steinmeyer, advisor. It was one of “those” days (Murphy’s law in action) when Bob took my picture and though you can’t tell, we were outside my office on a Manning Hall ledge. Jumping was a fleeting thought — any escape from the problems keeping me from finishing this book — but since I’m not real crazy about broken bones, I just crawled back through the window and went back to work. I thought the second year of doing this would be easier than the first, but soon learned that all the old problems got replaced with new ones. Some of the pages probably seem rather blank and some pertinent copy may be missing (organizations). This doesn’t mean I didn’t try to find out who the people were, it just means nobody around seemed to know. Due to lack of time and pictures. Break Time is a desperate measure. The same is true of my p.e, comment which is there to fill space (though it’s true). Anyway, special thanks go to Dr. Steinmeyer, Taylor Company and their representatives, Fred Nuesch, Patrick Washburn and his friends, Laura Charba, Kirk Towns and the South Texan files. I also thank Lars, Carl Seifert’s dog, who’s been an excellent friend. KJT. 136
