Regis- tration was held in the library and went much smoother than I had first anticipated. I've met my adviser and my schedule looks like it will work out fairly well with Tuesday my long- est day due to my 2:30 lab. The school newspaper (South Texan) put out a special registration edition {describing campus organizations, departments Texas A I University here I am! and upcoming activities) that I read through twice. I sure hope my classes aren't too difficult 'cause it looks as if there is a lot going on at this universi- ty that I want to find out all about. Dorm life so far is great. People are always goofing off or watching the soaps in the lounge. In fact, my favor- ite is about to start and I need to grab a chair before they're all taken. I'll be back to this later ... Grade Aleman and Colette Dames intently watch Erica's latest escapades on All My Children, 4 When all else fails-go to the bookstore-you might find Tommie Lopez, Diane Johnson and Carlos Ybarra there too. This afternoon I discovered the bookstore. They have everything! It's like a small general store. I bought my books, pens and pencils, special equipment for drawing class, a new t- shirt with an A I logo, a book bag, anyway, I spent quite a bit of money (only on necessities Dad) and if you could send some more it would be fantastic.” After dumping my books off at the dorm I went back to the Student Union Building (nicknamed the SUB) to check out the gameroom. There are several video games that I want to learn to play, as well as pool and ping- pong tables. Tve seen posters up all over campus about a dance tonight at the Pub (inside the SUB) and can't wait to go and meet all the people that will be there. Classes start tomorrow so I'll let you know more about what's going on later ... Lining up a perfect shot, David Alizadeh missed when the camera flashed blurring his vision. 5 James Jefferson studies Herman Anderson's Defender technique. Enjoy your chicken ' says Mandy Salinas as she hands Colette Dames her lunch, 6 Working out their semester carpool schedules are commuters George Misiong, Bill Barnes and Barbara Bryan. Tayo Mebude makes the semesterly call home for money. Through rain, sleet and snow the mail from home continues to pass from postmistress Yolanda Rodriguez's hands to campus boxes. Rappin” is where it's at for KTAl's Dejuan Oakes, Linda Mosher and Ron Cervantes, Since 1 had plenty of time between classes, I walked over to the campus post office to ask about mail services. They told me that a U.S. mail truck delivers and picks up mail everyday and that after sorting through it all, it's taken to the different dorms. This didn't explain my empty mail box! When I went back to the dorm to get books for my next class, I heard my roommate's radio on a campus sta- tion. They call it KTAI and the disc jockeys are A I students. It's a pretty good station. They have news, special interviews and play all types of mu- sic-punk, country and western, rock 'n' roll and even classical. Speaking of which, there's a piano in my dorm. Mom, so I'll try and practice. 7 Alumni Phonathon participants Mark Wehrheim for the Lambda Chi's and Zeta's Lori Tschirhart, Debbie Thomas and Patrice Kinney make their requests for money to support the Presidential Merit Scholarships given to incoming freshmen as Carol Alexander checks out a troubled phone. They have fall and spring rush parties when they pledge new mem- bers and they fll in the rest of the year There are Greeks all over campus!! by participating in campus and local events. Don't let all the parties and extra activities fool you Mom, most of these kids have full class and work schedules. Today I went to the personnel office and applied for a campus job. There are all types of jobs for lab instruc- tors, research and library assistants and clerical typists. There are oppor- tunities to be tudors, resident hall ad- visors, and so many more ., . Just think if I get a campus job Further investigation into the var- ious departments showed me that there is all kinds of research work go- ing on that my recruiter never got around to mentioning. The agricul- tural department (Ag) has equipment that their people learn to use, while also learning how to apply new tech- nology in the field of growing things Agricultural professor Dr. Donald Nixon and Gail Newman work on Gail's semester schedule. 10 Oscar Gomez reads the nitrogen content of lawn grass at the forage lab. Mauricio Pacheco and Andy Garza demonstrate the artificial inse- menation of a cow. Research associate Andy Garza takes a reading from the analytical scale. 11 Working in the cole room are graduate students Roger Campos, Johnny Lara and Anna Briones. I wasn't too thrilled about discover- ing snakes in the biology department until they told me that they were do- ing reserach on snake venom as a pos- sible cure for cancer, I guess maybe my prejudice against snakes is un- justified, especially if their research provides a clue to help cancer vic- tims. a chem prof plays billiards with atoms! In chemistry, they have this con- glomerate of machinery called a Dou- ble Mass Spectrometer that identifies chemical compounds and forms ions. It does all sorts of other stuff too, but when he wouldn't let me play billiards I decided to check out something else One of the Biology department's snakes which is milked for its venom. 12 Exploring a microscopic world is Vivian E. Garcia, research associate. Dr. Ronald E. Marcotte, chemistry professor, works with the only Double Mass Spectrometer System in Texas. 13 Keri Macomb takes inventory in the Physics' department stockroom. Good news! I got a call from the per- sonnel office today about a campus job. But I must specify three job preferences . . . Anyway, I told them I would take the first available job that I qualified for and then left to investigate the art de- partment. On the way over there, I got slightly sidetracked and wound up in some group's meeting. They sounded interesting too so I stayed there for a while. When I finally made it to the art department, I almost stumbled over my history professor! Maybe he didn't notice ... Michael Diaz carefully stacks silica bags in the art department. 14 Delma Lozano conducts a meeting of the Pi Kappa Delta Forensics Society, 15 Peggy Wilkes perfects the art of limestone lithography while Dr, Leslie Hunter leaves history class to become a part-time ceramics student. The days have gone so quickly that it's already time for Homecoming. For students, activities began with the tra- ditional Ag sponsored bonfire at mid- night Friday. For Ags, events climaxed when they kept the crown . . Spirits of past, present and future A I students ran high as the Hoggies stompled the Sam Houston Bearkats in a game where K.CJones and Kevin Flowers joined Jimmy Rivera, David Mims, Richard Zepeda, Justin Price and Ronnie Woodard in strengthen- ing the defense. 17 The 1982 Texas A I cheerleading squad keeps the crowd in high spirits during a time out. With the excitement of halftime over, I focused all my attention on the game and wished I'd watched more Monday night football Dad so that I'd know what was going on down there. The final score was A 1-33 Sam Houston-10. Everyone was having a party after the game-the Greeks, the Ags, even the Alumni. I hit them all, well, except for the Alumni one, I didn't have an invita- tion to get me through the door ... 1982 Homecoming Queen nominees and their escorts watch the last few seconds of the second quarter. It seemed like everyone was there I was glad none of my teachers assigned Homework 'cause once I got there, I didn't want to leave. The Student Activi- ties Board (formerly the Student Union Governing Board) was in charge of the event and I stayed after it was over to help them clean up, I think I'll join a club or two so that next year I can be more involved. The only problem is which clubs should I join? Oh yea, mid term was Oct. 18 Dad, and I'm passing all my classes , . . One of many December 1982 graduates receives his diploma and congratulations from President Bill Franklin. Will I ever sit in one of those honored places? Graduates wait to be called to the platform signifying the end of their college days. Newly commissioned U.S. Army second lieuten- ants leave the platform. Graduates sigh in relief at a concluded ceremony. I attended the 1982 fall graduation cere- mony and wondered if I would one day be receiving my college degree. Texas A I holds three such ceremonies yearly. One in May, August and De- cember. Thre's not as much pomp and circumstance as there was in high school, but watching each graduate's face as they received their diploma made it clear that this ceremony was indeed very significant. There really isn't too much to say. One semester has successfully ended and an- other one (more hectic) has begun. I very much enjoy being here and couldn't imagine graduating from any other uni- versity. Must go for the moment ... Working on the 1983 El Rancho has been a long road with quite a few downhill turns. The decision to have a yearbook this year was a tough one for the administra- tion to make, but in January, with one Journalism-Eng- lish major's application for the job the 8V2 x 11, 136-page book came into existence-slowly. The scrounging around for pictures and finding a pho- tographer to shoot the rest of the book finally has paid off with my writing this as July begins. Needless to say, I've learned a lot from the many mistakes I've made this year and I hope because of them, next year's book will be that much easier for me to assemble. I apologize for the many people who don't appear within these pages and I want to thank my student publication co-workers, my friends and family for putting up with all my rough times. Editor-Kimberly j. Taylor ter Allison and to Carol Alexander for all their help, support and advice. I'm deeply indebted to the friends who supplied me with pictures: Doug Vannoy, Grace Kosel, Dale and Clay Coalson, Daniel Richardson, Karen Cumberland and to staff photographers Romeo Riojas, Delma Saenz and ex- pecially Pedro Gonzalez. Thanks. See ya'll on the road, I wish to extend very special thanks to my adviser Dr. George Steinmeyer, my Josten's representative John Penry, Sports Information Director Fred Neusch, my sis- 1J6
