Emphasis is placed upon fundamen- tals and upon the humanities. An endeavor is made to impart a thorough grounding in mathematics, chemistry, and physics and at the same time give the students a general background in humanities and social sciences. The strictly engineering courses are designed to present general problems of design and operation of the different branches of engi- neering. Electrical Engineering 219 220 English Every student on campus, at one time or another, is enrolled in several semester hours of English. Serving as the El Rancho Editor for 1978-1979 has meant a great deal of work. It has meant working under constant pressure, worrying about problems that always arose, and working late at nights. Throughout the year I've had my share of countless sleepless nights and of trying to attend my classes the following mornings. Despite all the hard work encountered, I have also enjoyed my job. Being Editor proved to be very beneficial as I had the opportunity to learn more than the fundamentals of producing a yearbook, and I also learned to be a teacher, an administrator, and a guidance counselor. When I first took office early in October, I had very little experience, and I lacked the proper knowledge to produce a yearbook. My main concern after taking office was to acquaint myself with my job and responsibilities. It was my respon- sibility to guide and direct my staff to the work that lay ahead, and this came to be a challenge on my part. The El Rancho goals were set in producing an award winning yearbook, but as time went on, things started to fall apart. Most of the problems the El Rancho encountered this year were due to staff difficulties. Even though we met vari- ous difficulties along the way, the rest of the staff held together and tried very hard to produce a yearbook that would be appealing to the students of this university. As a Senior, I would like to thank my staff (those who have stuck with me) for their part in the production of the El Rancho. I will not list the names of these people because they are my friends, and they know who they are. Also, I would like to thank the following people for their help. Bob Allen-----Photographic Center Fred Nuesch------News Service Center Charlie Whites-----Taylor Publishing Company Representative Dr. James H. Herring------Student Publications Advisor In closing, I am grateful to the people of this university for having afforded me this privilege and would like to wish Mark Leyton much success in the production of the 1980 El Rancho. 288
