January Spring registration began January 15 this year and classes began Fri- day, January 18, Students with 8:00 courses walked to classes in the morning dark because of the coun- try’s switch to Daylight Savings Time. Clocks were set forward one hour to allow for more economical use of energy. The Young Americans appeared as a Kingsville Community Concert Association presentation in Jones Auditorium in January, The group is known for its television appear- ances, foreign tours, recordings, and a motion picture. They were chosen for combined vocal, instrumental, dancing and academic abilities, from 200 high schools and colleges in Southern California. The Texas A I University Open Chess Tournament was held in the SUB in mid-January. Dr. Jack Hardy, A I mathematics professor, and Tom Weaver of Corpus Christi, an official U.S, Chess Federation tour- nament director, directed the meet. Seven Texas A I speech students participated in the 41st annual Wild- cat Speech Tournament January 25- 26 on the Abilene Christian College campus. Areas entered were debate, impromptu and oration. Student fill out and organize cards during Spring registration. One of the Richard Davis works present in the art gallery is the Trojan Horse. 28

February Horror films and science fiction classics were shown in the Student Union Ballroom February 11-14, Shown every night were episodes from Gene Autry’s first starring production, the serial, The Phantom Empire ’ Chairman of the Artist Course Committee said the films served a cultural need. The films traced the horror and science fiction genre through motion picture history. A total of 14 movies were presented including the uncut version of King Kong.” The A I Singers went on a two- day mini-tour this month. The 17- member vocal ensemble performed in Corpus Christi at Miller High School and entertained Rotary Club members at a luncheon. Tour per- formances were also arranged by the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce. U1L Vocal, Solo, and Ensemble competition was held at A I Febru- ary 16. Approximately 30 schools throughout Texas participated in the one-day competition. Internationally: Patricia Hearst, 19, daughter of publisher Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped by the Sym- bionese Liberation Army February 4. The kidnappers requested Hearst to buy $70 worth of food for each Cali- fornia resident on welfare, a ransom of $147 million, Hearst, as of Febru- ary 13, pledged to try. Alexander Solzhenitsy, the Nobel Prize winner and best-known critic of the soviet regime was arrested in Moscow and exiled to West Ger- many. His book The Gulag Archipe- lago 1918-1956, details accounts of the prison system and Stalinist politi- cal repressions which implicates many high officials in the current regime. The mall fountain underwent several personality changes in February. It was purple once and then it was bubbly. Part of Orienteering has involved these ROTC men to locate a controlled marker with a compass. 30
