November A November get-acquainted party, with refreshments and music, allowed students to meet the new university president, Dr. Gerald Robins. In his open invitation to students, Dr. Robins wrote, “I would welcome the opportu- nity to meet you and would like for you to meet my wife.” He explained that the purpose of the informal gathering was to enable him to make contact with the students, A good cross-section of stu- dents turned out to meet their new pres- ident and the three vice-presidents. Eva Rodriguez, a Kingsville senior, was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime of the A I-Howard Payne football game. Miss Rodriguez, an Eng- lish-French major, has been president of Alpha Lambda Delta and Tau Beta Sigma. She was sponsored by the A I band. First runner-up for Homecoming Queen was Dana Vittitee from Falfur- rias. She was sponsored by Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Other Homecoming events included the election of Gilbert E. Gil” Steinke, A I football coach and athletic direc- tor, to receive the Distinguished Alum- nus Award. Dr, Donald Patrick, Austin neurosurgeon, assumed the presidency of the Alumnus Association Board of Directors, Head-cheerleader, Marvin Douglas, resigned his position in early Novem- ber. He explained that he did not have enough time to participate as he should. Pam Brewer succeeded Douglas as head cheerleader. Miss Brewer had received the second highest number of votes during Spring '73 elections. John E. Conner celebrated his 90th birthday in the museum named for him. The board and officers of the Kingsville Historical Society presented a colored portrait of Conner and a plaque to the museum at a reception honoring Con- ner. Classes were dismissed Nov. 20-25 in observance of the Thanksgiving holi- days. Nationally: The outbreak of war in the Middle East between the Arab countries and Israel, and the U.S. sup- port of Israel, caused the Arab nations to withhold oil supplies to the U.S. As a result the U.S. faced its first real fuel shortage and general energy crisis.
