The most obvious opportunity to learn at Texas A l is when students are in elass. They listen to in- structors ' lectures, participate in discussions, take page after page of notes. There are also those who dream of davs to come and seek for additional preparation knowledge with which they can face the future. These students ask for individual help from their instructors; they search for themselves, trying to discover that allusive concept which flits through their minds; they question the knowledge of their fellow classmates. The facts are there, the knowledge is waiting to be taken - but only the student has the ability to reach out and take the facts to himself. Only the stu- dent can bring knowledge to life.

Learning presents itself in many disguises — in a classroom, in the midst of friends, in a lonely crowd, on a team. Learning is a never-ending process for col- lege students. When Texas A I University was established in 1925 as South Texas State Teachers College, the goal of the school was to direct and guide students in aca- demic learning. The school grew and with its growth came the knowledge that learning didn ' t stop in the classroom but it extended into the student activities, sports and organizations. As the college grew the students developed a broader range of interests. Not everyone wanted to be a teacher — some wanted to be businessmen, some wanted to be engineers, others wanted to be agricul- tural specialists. The time had come for the college to expand in order to meet the students ' needs. Texas College of Arts and Industries was bom. Today Texas College of Arts and Industries is no more. This year another step forward has been taken to expand and develop the college to meet the needs of its current population. On September 1, 1967, the college became Texas A I University.
