To learn by doing is to really learn, sages have contended. So the chemis- try student works with formulas, ex- perimenting, making mistakes, start- ing all over again. The physics student spends a portion of his evenings ex- ploring the universe. The home eco- nomics student tries a new recipe. The elementary education student spends hours working with the questioning, amusing, exasperating nursery school population. The journalism student writes, edits, rewrites, re-edits until his copy satisfies himself and a finicky editor. And as they grope with their new recipes, the unfamiliar personalities, the unexplored areas of knowledge, they gain knowledge that can never be transferred through a book alone. 13

On warm sunny days the near-by shoreline beckons student strollers. The solitude of the beach is a perfect spot to abandon studies for a moment, to laugh, talk and share thoughts. Here a student is invited to look into himself and others — and to learn. A sudden shower and the umbrella rainbows appear. The wonder of a summer rain is shared by students at their leisure or in their breathless, hap- py haste. A brief moment is all it lasts, but it is a part of the total experience of learning the lesson of life. Leisure time fun is caug ht on the wing when rushed students leave the campus for a quick movie, a miniature golf game, for some good bowling competition. V r- , l ' - 15
