The Shadow knows—and maybe so does Estelle Duelle. Sally Rankin, penned in the Hal- loween carnival jail, screeches for help as Mary Lu Link and Judy New think they see help arriving. 32 The boys in Baugh Hall created their own ice kingdom during the freak cold spell in Jan- uary. J, B. Reyes works out his class schedule as a worried Betty Stewart wonders how she is going to take everything she needs. Sally Stout bows at the Intersorority Presentation dance, Sharon Asher, Vicki Eberle, David Pool, Margie Hobrecht, and Woody Hagen preside at the registration table during Homecoming, 33 Francisco Gutierrez releases latent energy at a basketball game pep rally for interested spectators. Tony Harvey makes an ignominious exit with food in hand and mouth at the Slater luau. Solemnity marks the occasion as Patty Ljungdahl and other new Alpha Chi mem- bers are initiated. 34 Carolyn Forbis points out a bit of worldly knowledge to her students while practice teaching. Jim Morgan, Sharon Rice, Sally Stout, and Joe Cordon interrupt their work for a laughter recess. Warren Dwyer takes a bow after his ex- cellent performance at the Intersorority Presentation dance. Carlos Montoya demonstrates his skill as Mrs. Montoya and Dr, Stewart look on. Montoya attracted a record-breaking crowd this fall with his flamenco renditions. 35 Feet accentuate the scene as boys in Poteet enjoy the late, late afternoon show in the lounge. Disgruntled George Careno pays away his life’s earnings to “further his education” at spring registration. Joe Gordon puts his best Foot forward as the other three Zeta Chi cheerleaders strike winsome poses. Dolores Rivera, Andres Ramos, Dollie Duena.s, Esther Lerma, Elsie Ducnas, and Stella Brewster enjoy the con- genial atmosphere of the Tej'as Room. 36 Hermia (Barbara Breed) voices amazement and despair as Ly- sander (Jerry Munns), under a magic spell, suddenly falls out of love with her. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Tuck (Polly Garza) and Oberon (Jim Morgan) stand over the seemingly lifeless form of Demetrius (John Woodridge) in a dramatic scene from the Shakespearean production. Creon (Troy Wicker) tries to force his sense of order and justice on a morally conscious Antigone (Kay Franklin). 38 “Wizard of Oz” Several Munchkins, played by Joe Mendez, Margot Ortegon, Polly Garza, Coy Garza, Nan Burn am, and Irma Lee Rose, place the magic slippers on Dorothy’s (Sharon Rice’s) feet. “Antigone A raging Creon condemns Antigone to death for disobeying his edict that her brother should not be buried. 39 FROM LEFT; Hoyt Chapman, Richard Parks, Marilyn McCord, Dr, Hood, Bill Jackson, Walter Lubojacky, Mike May, Senior Class Officers HOYT CHAPMAN.................................. Steinke, head football coach and di- rector of athletics, is an all-time Javelina star who played professional ball with the Philadelphia Eagles before return- ing to coaching. Little, line coach, was an All-American at Texas A M and a professional football player with the Baltimore Colts before coming to A I. Greene, baekfield coach, was an outstanding Javelina halfback in 1949. He coached at Boling before joining the A I staff in 1959. Javelinas Win Season Opener 27-0 The Texas A I Javelinas opened defense of their LSC title with a convincing 27-0 win over UCC s Tarpons. A crowd of 5,500 people watched as the Hoggies scored two touchdowns in each half with Wilbur McDaniel con- verting three of them successfully. The Tarpons never seri- ously threatened, All-Conference Butch Pressley opened the scoring for the Javelinas with a 5-yard run to paydirt, climaxing a 90- vard drive. Then near the end of the half, sophomore Charlie Curtis added another touchdown to the scoreboard. The second half was much a carbon copy of the first. Sid Blanks slashed over for one score, and All-Conference quarterback Jarrell Hayes pegged a touchdown pass to half- back Tommy Janik to put the finishing touches on the Hog- gies successful 1961 debut. 185 JarreM Hayes (16) watches anxiously as the pass he just unleashed heads towards Charles Curtis' (15) waiting arms. A I 27 - Trinity 13 A rs hustling Hoggies made it two in a row with a 27-13 victory over Trinity's Tigers. Playing before 7,500 fans, the Javelinas scored twice in both the second and third quarters to put away their second win in as many outings. Butch Pressley continued his scoring ways with two touchdowns, both corning from three yards out. The Hogs struck like lightning for the other two scores. Ronnie Holiday returned an intercepted pass 61 yards to paydirt in the first half, and then, following intermission, Sid Blanks electrified the crowd with a 65 yard scoring dash. A I 22 - East Texas State 6 The Texas A I Javelinas, termed tire Number one small-eollege team in the nation, continued their winning ways with a 22-6 win over conference rival East Texas State before 7,500 fans. Leading 14-0 at halftime by virtue of Butch Press- ley's 4-yard scoring dash and Jarrell Hayes' 20-yard touchdown toss to Sid Blanks, the Hogs added an insur- ance touchdown in the fourth quarter when Charles Cur- tis drove ten yards for the score, Hayes’ two PAT passes, one each to Sammy Garza and Dickie Carpenter, accounted for the rest of the Javelina scoring. 186 DICKIE CARPENTER MAURICIO LEAL Corpus Christi, Halfback, Two Let- ters. Weakened by injuries, the Hogs were unable to contain die inspired Paynemen and went down to defeat for the first time in over a year. After being behind 7-0 at halftime, the Javelinas roared back to take the lead, 8-7, on Jarrell Hayes’ 14-yard scoring pass to Dickie Carpenter, For a while it looked as if Hayes two-pointer conversion pass to Bobby Pyssen was going to be the margin of the visitors, but a last-quarter touchdown by the Jackets ended Add's hopes for an undefeated season. A I 14 - Sam Houston State 28 The injury bug continued to plague the Javelinas as they dropped their second game in a row, losing 28-14 to the eventual conference champs, Sam Houston State, A I, with seven starters either out or slowed down be- cause of injuries, led briefly in the first quarter on Bobby Pyssen s 3-yard scoring plunge before the Bearkats' superior depth began to tell. Sid Blanks opened the scoring with a 64-yard scamper which was soon followed by Bobby Pyssen’s 3-yard touch- down plunge. After holding a 12-6 halftime lead, the Javelinas con- tinued to pile up tile points. Blanks again turned on the speed to dash 48 yards to paydirt with Jarrell Hayes running over the conversion. Pyssen added his second score in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run, and the Hogs’ last score was turned in by tackle Jesus Villesca, who plucked an Axman fumble out of the air and returned it for the 6 points. John Mc- Elroy’s conversion run was successful. A I 8 Lamar Tech 7 In one of the most thrilling games played in Javelina Stadium, the Hogs downed Lamar Tech’s Cardinals 8-7 before an excited Dad’s Day crowd. Behind 7-0 at halftime, A I came back in the third period and scored on Jarrell Hayes’ 10-yard pass to Dickie Carpenter. The margin of victory was provided when Hayes tossed a conversion pass to Sid Blanks for the two extra points.
