Bulldog quarterback Gene Sharp kept the Hoggies on their toes and the Bulldogs in the game with a barrage of passes during the first half. The senior passer connected on nine aerials in 14 attempts for 154 yards and the Lutherans’ first touchdown during the first two periods. However, the Javelinas kicked the props from underneath the Bulldog passing attack after halftime, and rolled steadily on the ground to outclass the visitors. Javelinas Squeeze by Pumas On Last Quarter Pass Play By GLENN OWENS A long pass in the middle of the fourth quarter paid off for A Fs Javelinas as they downed the National University of Mexico 13-6 in their season opener in Brownsville last Saturday. Mexico had scored first in the inilial quarter and A I tied it up early in the second period. By BER HENRY A I’a Javelinas dropped a heart-breaking 26-21 deci- sion to the Southwest Texas' Hobcats last Saturday in the team’s first Lone Star Conference grid clash. Playing in their own back yard the ’Cats took advantage of the Hogs’ slow start and racked up 12 points before the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter a 70-yard touchdown march was staged by the Javelinas with Quarterback Joe Green connecting with three straight passes. He flipped two in a row to End Johnny McCampbell and hit Halfback Cal Hutzier, who made a spectacular falling catch on tiie Bobcat 18-yard' marker. Two line plunges moved the ball to the 12 where a fake field goal attempt left Fullback Steve Curry open on the six for a pass com- pletion. A Bobcat penally advanc- ed the ball to the one-yard line where Hutzier boomed over guard for the touchdown. Green made the first of three perfect extra point kicks. Both teams pushed across first quarter scores, A I failing to con- vert after theirs to give the Bear- kats a 7-6 lead. In the second per- iod each team scored again, both conversion attempts falling short to give Sam Houston a 3 3-12 half- ■ imo lead.______________ East Texas Lions Claw Hogs 14-7 in Commerce A I started strong but was unable to hold East Texas State in the fourth quarter as the Lions rode a 30-mile an hour wind to two touchdowns and a 14-7 win in Commerce Saturday.
