You have before you now the product of months of hard work. It is no easy task for an editor to sit down and cudgel the plan for a yearbook out of empty space. Especially when he didn't know any more about putting a yearbook together than yours truly. But here it is. Whether the staff and I succeeded in making this El Rancho a living record of 1950 at A I is up to you to decide. We think you'll like it. It is presided over by a benevolent Queen and her six Ladies of Lantana who believe that the best Ruler is he who rules not. By a strange coin- cidence, the Kingdom of Lantana covers exact- ly the same area as the Campus of Texas Col- lege of Arts and Industries. To best present the life of the students at this institution we are presenting it as a Magical, Mythical King- dom. Try to see the similarity as you delve through the contents of this chronicle. And in what better way could we begin than by examining the grounds of this wonderful Kingdom . . . President of the College ‘Pxe utwt’ ‘THe toiqe To the Students of A I: It is a privilege to greet you and to acknowledge your splendid cooperation throughout the year The reali- zation that you are making progress toward greater edu- cational attainment is a source of much satisfaction On the other hand, the thought that many of you will complete your college training this year, others next year, and that all of you will be gone within three years, leaves a feeling of sadness It would be difficult to list all of the ambitions that we have for you We hope that you are obtaining the technical knowledge necessary to qualify you as leaders in a complex world, but most of all, we hope that you are big enough to use this knowledge in a beneficial manner America has become great as a result of the greatness of its people-people who were not afraid of work; who believed in a principle; and who were willing to fight for it. The survival of America depends upon you and others like you Future reports of your sucoesses as strong, upright American citizens will make all of us at Texas College of Arts and Industries very happy fej? MAYHEW Head Coach and Athletic Director STAFF Coach Mayhew came to A 6 I in 1946 following a season as assistant at Southwestern University. He had compiled an outstanding record in high school coaching circles, taking Abilene High School to state finals three times, winning the title in 1928 and 1931. Among the players he developed at Abilene were John Kimbrough, All-American back at A M and Dub Sibley, A M's all-conference center. Coach Mayhew lettered in football and baseball two years at Meridan College and finished at Southwestern in 1922, where he was a two year letterman. JESS G. ( BUCK ) MUNDY Assistant Coach Buck Mundy joined the A I coaching staff at the start of the current season after being on the Schreiner Institute staff for the last two years. Before joining the Schreiner staff, he coached the Marshall High School line for three years. Mar- shall won their district championship all three years. He later coached at Plainview two seasons. A graduate of Pampa High School, Mundy attended New Mexico Military Institute and McMurry College. He was Golden Gloves Champion of New Mexico in 1934 and he coached the 1938 state Golden Gloves championship team of Texas. He is also an assistant instructor in physical education. JACK (RED) RUCKER Assistant Coach Red Rucker played guard, center, quarterback, and fullback for the Javelinas from 1939-41 so he is no stranger to the school. He was assistant coach in 1946 at McAllen, where he had previously won All-Valley posts in successive years at center and quarterback. A natural athlete, he has caught for championship softball teams in the Lower Rio Grande Valley for several summers, This is his third year on the Adi coach- ing staff where he serves as basketball coach in addition to his other duties. I. storied a good season off by defeating a favored Howard Payne team by just one point in one of the hardest fought and best played games of the season. Howard Payne started the parade by scoring first and failing to con- vert the extra point. Javelina Trenton Fowler then scored a touchdown and Bennie Liska converted to put A. I. ahead by one point. Howard Payne got back in the ball game with a sustained drive that was mostly in the air, scoring and converting. A. L finished this thriller when Harold Menke crashed over for the tieing touchdown and Liska again converted for the winning point. A. I.20 S.W.T. S.C. 12 After spotting their hosts 12 points early in the game, A. I. settled down and wrung out a hard fought victory against South West Texas State in San Marcos, Gene Greene, Bob Rahm, and Roland Kudla carried over for the scores while Harold Menke and Laddie Liska accounted for more than half of the yardage gained on the ground. The Javelinas admit that this was one of their hardest games of the year against a fighting team that threw a scare into the fans of the A, I. team. A. .L 16 SAM HOUSTON 12 The Javelinas won for the third straight year over the Sam Houston Bearkats in a game that showed the A. I. team's bruising ground attack. The Javeli- nas rolled up 261 yards on the ground to 103 for the Bearkats. Gene Greene and Laddie Liska were the mainstays of the Javelina attack with Greene scoring twice, one time on a 100 yard kickoff return. The margin of victory was a field goal kicked by Javelina Bennie Liska on a fourth down from the 17 yard line after the Javelina ground attack stalled. A. I. 14 McMURRY 39 The McMurxy Indians, winners of the Texas Conference Championship, showed their might in a game that left A. I. holding the wrong end of their worst defeat of the season. The Hogs were never able to get started rolling until the last quarter, after McMuiry had already scored 39 points. An 87 yard drive with Harold Menke doing most of the carrying saw Gene Greene tally by going the last 37 yards to paydirt. The only other Javelina score was a result of a fumble recovered by Roland Kudla behind the McMurry goal line. A. I. 33 DANIEL BAKER 0 Playing in the mud and rain, A. L defeated a badly outclassed Daniel Baker team in a game that saw the Javelinas scoring all their points in the first half and then turning the game over to the Daniel Baker team. The Javelinas scored at will during the first two periods and decided to make it a defensive drill for the substitutes by kicking on the first and second downs in the last half. The Hillbillies were never able to score and the game ended just as the first half had ended, 33-0. A. I. 46 SUL ROSS 6 A. I. took sweet revenge on the Sul Ross Lobos for spoiling the A. I. homecoming the year before by defeating the Lobos in their homecoming this year. In doing so. they showed themselves to be the near-great team that they really were. Gene Greene. Harold Menke, Kenneth Scholz and Trenton Fowler were in the scoring lineup in this wildscoring spree. Greene again made one of his sensational kickoff returns for 100 yards and a touchdown. Bob Rahm, calling signals, tossed three touchdown passes. A. 1.50 A. C. C. 13 The Abilene Christian College Wildcats came over 300 miles to face this crushing defeat at the hands of the Javelinas. Harold Menke, shown diving over for the initial score, along with Melvin Moody, Gene Greene, Trenton Fowler, Laddie Liska, R, H. Richards, Roland Kudla and Kenneth Scholz, made up the scoring parade. This was the game that saw the battle of the Greens; Gene Greene of A. I. and Alton Green of A. C. C., two of the leading ground gainers in the conference. A. I. 7 SOUTHWESTERN 3 An overconfident A. 6 I. team found itself outplayed all over the field by an underrated Southwestern University eleven in one of their closest games of the year. The Javelinas trailed by 3 points from the second half to the last quarter and it began to appear as if the game was going to end 3—0. Then Milton Saxon intercepted a Southwestern pass on the A. I. three yard line and a 97 yard drive followed which saw Harold Menke going over for the tally and Bobby Koch converting. A. I. 19 AUSTIN COLLEGE 20 A. I. lost its third homecoming game in a row to an air-minded team of Austin College Kangaroos. The Javelinas took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter with Bob Rahm and Gene Greene scoring. The Kangaroos then scored twice through the air and once on a fumble in the A. I, end zone. The winning point was a result of the 2 out of 3 conversions by Kangaroo Harold Johnson. Laddie Liska scored A. I.'s last tally in the fourth quarter, but the conver- sion was unsuccessful. A. I. 27 U. C. C. 12 Climaxing a year of feuding between the two schools which involved stolen anchors, ox yokes and free haircuts for all, A. I. soundly thrashed the Tarpons of the nearby University of Corpus Christi, Gene Greene and Trenton Fowler alternated on the scoring but the game was a beautiful exhibition of playing by the A, I. team, especially during a 93 yard touchdown kick- off return by Gene Greene. Last year A, L lost the first game of this series which promises to be one of the hottest rivalries in South Texas. John Bonner Cenfer, No Letter Kerrville Bud. It was the Tarpons' game soon after the opening whistle. They piled up a 42-22 lead at the half, less Richardson dropped 28 points through the basket for UCC while his teammate, Clark Shoptaw, managed to pile up 18 points. The Javelinas were led by Allan Pearce with 11 points and Harlan Huibregtse with 9 points. Adi 61 ST, MARY’S 47 The A I Javelinas took their first game of the year from the St. Mary's Rattlers by a score of 61 to 47. The first half only showed that the teams were still a little clumsy. St. Mary's led at half-time 25-21, but the Hogs came back in the second half to double the Rattlers' score. Richards and Huibreg- tse scored 16 and 15 points respectively for the Javelinas while Gittinger and Barberid piled up 18 and 15 points apiece for the Rattlers, Red Ruckers' Javelinas v on their first conference game of the season by an exciting two point mar- gin. The scoring for the Hogs was lead by Hui- bregtse who piled up a total of 16 points. Allan Pearce took second honors with 10 points. The game seesawed back and forth and it took two field goals by Huibregtse. one by Matthys and a free throw by Bud Booth to overcome the Kan- garoos' lead at the end of the game. Ralph Buck- ley led the Kangaroos with 16 points. The UCC Tarpons were again too much for the A S 1 cagers to handle in the second straight win for the Corpus Christians. They took an early 11 point lead and retained it throughout the game. Highpoint man for the Tarpons was Jess Richardson with 25 points, A d I's top scorers that night were Bob Richards, with 14 points, and Cotton Matthys. with 10. AUSTIN 49 UCC 60 AUSTIN 46 A I 44 SWSTC 63 It was an easy victory for Southwest State Teach- ers College as they romped over A £ I 63-44 in an out-of-town game. Buster Gillis led the boys from San Marcos with 13 points. The high point man for the outclassed Javelinas was Bob Richards who managed to pile up 10 points. The Austin College Kangaroos held the lead all the way with the exception of the first minute of play in this thrilling return bout. Big Jim Wilson led the scoring with 16 points for the Kangaroos. Allan Pearce led the Hogs with nine points. The game was a free-throwing spree for Wilson of Aus- tin who made 17 out of 23 tries. This game left the Javelinas standing with one win, one loss score in conference play. A I 45 SWSTC 71 Harlan Huibregtse led the Javelinas with 15 points but still the Hogs were left behind as the San Marcos cagers trounced them by another top-heavy victory. Defeated by tremendous margins in both games with the Southwest State Teachers College team, the Javelinas were playing completely over their heads. A S I 54 ST, MARY'S 42 The A I Javelinas took an easy win from the Rattlers of St. Mary's by a score of 54 to 42. Hui- bregtse and Richards led with scores of 17 and 13 respectively. Viltman of St. Mary's led the Rattlers with 12 points. This game was a repeat win over the first team the Hogs defeated this season. The A £ I Javelinas took an easy win from the St. Edwards Crusaders in the first of a two game series. The Hogs led the game alt the way except for a moment when the score was tied. The scoreboard read 23-17 at half-time. Bob Richards was high point man for A I with 14 points and Jim Fauger ousse led the losers with an even dozen points. The Javelinas took the second game of the series with another easy win. The game was slow and never in doubt as indicated by the score. It seemed to be more a defensive duel than a scoring spree as many of the games have been. Harlan Huibregtse led the scoring with 16 points. The final score was 4936. ST. EDWARDS 39 ST. EDWARDS 36 The Hogs were able to do a little better in the sec- ond game of this two game series with the cagers of Abilene Christian College but they just could not manage a win, Huibregtse and Richards were again high point men of the game with 19 points apiece to their credit. The game was close but the Javelinas were just no match for the ACC team. A 61 61 HOWARD PAYNE 71 The Howard Payne cagers handed the A 6 1 team a 71 61 deleat in a game played at Brownwood, Huibregtse was high point man, contributing 19 points to the score. Norman Clark was next in line with 12 points. Howard Payne maintained a top heavy lead throughout the game, with a halftime score of 34 to 23. The spirit was willing but the flesh was weak and the Javelinas just couldn't win. Clark and Huibregtse again led the Javelinas, rack- ing up 15 points apiece, in this return bout with the Yellow Jackets of Howard Payne but the score again was in favor of the cagers from Brownwood. A 6 I trailed by only six points at half-time, which was an improvement over the previous game, but they were never able to catch up. A 6 I 54 HOWARD PAYNE 65 A I 57 ST. EDWARDS 55 Harlan Huibregtse led the Hogs to sweet revenge in the second game of this series as he scored 23 points for the Javelinas. This game was close all the way and the fact that it was played away from home made it all the harder for the A 6 I boys. Paced by an exciting seesaw lead, the game gave the Javelinas a total of three games won out of four played with the St. Edwards team. The St. Edwards cagers played a fine brand of basketball on the opening game of this two game series. The decisive margin of 11 points showed that the St Edwards team was definitely on and the Javelinas were not. High point honors of the night went to a St. Edwards player who racked up 15 points but Bud Booth of the Adi team got credit for 9 points. ST. EDWARDS 53 Harlan Huibregtse and Bob Richards led the A I Javelinas to a 53-51 win over a tribe of stubborn McMurry Indians in the first of two games. Both erf the cagers scored 19 points. Marvelous floor work and dribbling were performed by Bud Booth. High- point man of the evening was Herchel Kimbrell with 23 points. Kimbrell, on the McMurry team, was leading scorer in the Texas Conference. A I's Wisconsin import, Harlan Huibregtse, again paced the Javelinas in their second win over Mc- Murry, making the two game series a clean sweep for A I. Huibregtse racked uo 25 points as high point man while his teammate.
