DR. EDWARD NEWLON JONES was named pres- ident of the Texas College of Arts and Industries in March, 1942, Prior to coming to A l, Dr. Jones was dean of Baylor University and o widely known fac- ulty member of that institution for 17 years. He re- ceived his B. S, degree in 1921 from Ottawa Uni- versity of Kansas; graduate assistant and fellow in botany at the State University of Iowa from 1922-25, and was granted the Ph.D. by that institution in 1925. In 1940 the L.L.D. degree was conferred on him by his alma mater, Ottawa University. He has done post graduate study in Columbia University, as well as the University of Chicago. A Message for the 1946 El Rancho We are grateful beyond expression that war has ceased since the 1945 El Rancho came off the Press. Battles of Peace have replaced those of shot, shell, bombs, and torpedoes. The Texas College of Arts and Industries, like other institutions and industry, has been reconverting during the past months. It has been a strenuous but pleasant task Our efforts have been guided by the consciousness that the men who left the campus to fight for America around the world want, and by all means deserve, the best we can provide for them in the classroom and on the campus. As we give grate- ful thanks for their return we also bow our heads in reverent tribute to the memory of the seventy-six former students by whose names a gold star has been placed on the Roll of Honor of the College. They would have us carry on and that we shall—for them and for the betterment of the Nation for which they gave their all. A l goes forward! Her friendly campus will become even more friendly dur- ing the years ahead, and the credits earned and degrees granted will increase in value, for a seriousness of purpose and a determination to win the battles of peace prevails. Most sincerely, E. N. JONES
