DR. EDWARD NEWLON JONES was named presi- dent of the Texas College of Arts and Industries in March, 1942. Prior to coming to A I, Dr. Jones was dean of Baylor University and a widely known faculty member of that institution for 17 years. He received his B.S. degree in 1921 from Ottawa University of Kan- sas; graduate assistant and fellow in botany at the State University of Iowa from 1922-25, and was granted the Ph.D. by that institution in 1925, In 1940 the LL.D. degree was conferred on him by his alma mater, Ottawa University. He has done post graduate study in Columbia University, as well as the University of Chicago. A Message for the 1945 El Rancho In the 1944 El Rancho I wrote of the A I campus to be. We can record with pleasure a few steps along the path of realization—such important ones as our consulting architects' preparation of the Master Plan for campus ex- pansion. This year, however, I wish to write of something even more important. An editorial in a recent issue of The South Texan spoke of it—The Spirit of A I. During the past year it has seemed imperative that I think about things more than about people. Plans for new buildings are indeed exciting, but I have not derived from them a satisfaction in kind and depth as gratifying as that which comes from working closely with faculty and students. The Spirit of A I, which new students say is friendly, must ever be even more conspicuous on the campus than the tower of the proposed Administra- tion-Library Building and the music of college friendships sweeter than that of the chimes which will crown that tower. All of us—students, faculty, and ex-students—will live and write together a glorious answer to the editorial writer's question, Will the Spirit of A I keep step with its campus and buildings? E. N. JONES That answer must be, Yes, it will!
