DEDICATION To the ex-students of A 51 who have carried the cause of democracy so deeply in their hearts, that they gladly put aside the world of books and study until a peaceful time, we dedicate the 1945 El Rancho. We who are fortunate enough to be able to continue our education, wish to dedicate our yearbook to the memory of the gallant young men who have sacrificed their lives on the far flung battle fronts. Not all of the ex-students are performing their duties in the armed forces. The ranks of industry are full of technicians and skilled workers who are doing their share to bring total victory and are thinking, working, and praying for a universal and lasting peace. To the ex-students of the Texas College of Arts and Industries, in every branch of the services, to those engaged in industry, and to those who have given their lives for their country, we dedicate this annual. We Pledge Anew Board of Directors Members of the Beard of Directors of the Texas College of Arts and Industries are, (seated) Frank C. Smith, president; Mrs. Frank M. Lewis, vice-president; Sam Fore, Jr., W. M. Griffith, and Judge James M. Daugherty; (stand- ing) A. L. Cramer, Holman. Cartwright, H. E. Butt, R. C. Eckhardt, secretary, and Dr. E. N. Jones, DR. EDWARD NEWLON JONES was named presi- dent of the Texas College of Arts and Industries in March, 1942. Prior to coming to A I, Dr. Jones was dean of Baylor University and a widely known faculty member of that institution for 17 years. He received his B.S. degree in 1921 from Ottawa University of Kan- sas; graduate assistant and fellow in botany at the State University of Iowa from 1922-25, and was granted the Ph.D. by that institution in 1925, In 1940 the LL.D. degree was conferred on him by his alma mater, Ottawa University. He has done post graduate study in Columbia University, as well as the University of Chicago. A Message for the 1945 El Rancho In the 1944 El Rancho I wrote of the A I campus to be. We can record with pleasure a few steps along the path of realization—such important ones as our consulting architects' preparation of the Master Plan for campus ex- pansion. This year, however, I wish to write of something even more important. An editorial in a recent issue of The South Texan spoke of it—The Spirit of A I. During the past year it has seemed imperative that I think about things more than about people. Plans for new buildings are indeed exciting, but I have not derived from them a satisfaction in kind and depth as gratifying as that which comes from working closely with faculty and students. The Spirit of A I, which new students say is friendly, must ever be even more conspicuous on the campus than the tower of the proposed Administra- tion-Library Building and the music of college friendships sweeter than that of the chimes which will crown that tower. All of us—students, faculty, and ex-students—will live and write together a glorious answer to the editorial writer's question, Will the Spirit of A I keep step with its campus and buildings? E. N. JONES That answer must be, Yes, it will! DR. OTTO R. NIELSEN, who was appointed dean of A 51 in 1942, received his B.A., B.D., and M.A, degrees from Texas Christian University, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas He has done graduate work at the University of Chicago and the Uni- versity of Minnesota. Dr. Nielsen was formerly assistant to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Texas, and before that Dean of Men at Texas Christian University. R. E. MAY, Business Manager and another of the original faculty members of the college, is better known to students and faculty alike as Pop,” He attended the University of Texas, and was formerly head accountant of the Rice Hotel in Houston. GEORGE M. SIMONS received his B.S. from A6J in 1935, and was appointed Assistant Busi- ness Manager the same year. In 1941 he was also named as Purchasing Agent for the college. DR. GEORGE W, McCULLEY, registrar of the college and a professor of business administration, received his B.A. degree from Daniel Baker College, and his M.A. from the University of Texas. Dr. McCulley came to Adi in 1930 as registrar and head of the department of accounting. ALICE Y. McCONNELL, a graduate of Meridian Junior College and Baylor University, has been Counsellor of Women at A I since September, 1943. She did graduate study at the University of Texas and at East Texas State Teachers College. An interesting and ver- satile speaker, Mrs. McConnell has become well-known throughout South Texas for her appearances on Hogg Foundation programs, sponsored by the University of Texas. JOHN L. BEARD, assistant to the president, came to A I in September, 1944. Previous to his present position, he was vice president and busi- ness manager at Oklahoma University. He re- ceived his A.B. degree from Howard Payne Col- lege, his B.S. from Daniel Baker College, his M.A. from Hardin Simmons University, and is complet- ing work on his Ph.D. from the University of Texas. DR. JOHN L. NIERMAN, Chairman of the Graduate Council, is one of the original faculty members of A L He has three times been acting president of A I, and for five years was Dean of the College. At present he is head of the science department. Dr. Nierman attended the University of Missouri, receiving his A.B. and B.S. degrees there in 1919, his M.A. degree in 1920, and Ph.D. in 1924. He came to A SI from Sweet Briar College, Virginia. HAROLD N. WHITE was appointed Assist- ant to the Dean and Acting Director of Exten- sion in the spring of 1944 following the depar- ture of the Army Specialized Training Unit. While the unit was on the campus, Mr. White instructed the trainees in mathematics, and this year he was a member of the staff of the Eng- lish department. He received his B.A. and M. As an American boy or girl, you have inherited the right to decide what you want to become and become just that, whether a farmer, businessman or woman, nurse, schoolteacher or salesman. Some people call this inherited right, free enterprise. Some call it democracy or opportunity, but whatever you call it . . . it's just a name for the way America works. It's a name for the freedom that gives every one of you the opportunity to build for your future, by your own efforts—a future that's yours. It's also one of the freedoms that your brothers and fathers are fighting for today. Without this freedom of enterprise, America wouldn't be where she is today in a high place among nations. And it's this same freedom of enterprise which has enabled the business-managed electric companies of America to produce more than 80% of this country's power . . . power for war and for peace. tfc «iqp of GOOD SERVICE CENTRAL POWER AND LIGHT COMPANY A Self-Supporting, Tax-Paying Business LYNCH DAVIDSON CO. nAviDsoM || J Certified Lumber 1 Is Worth More ' A I STORE The Place to Buy Lumber • MAX CORNELIUS, Mgr. One of the most dramatic, spine-tingling expressions to come out of this war is the simple, three-word phrase, This Is It! The only way to define such a phrase is to point out that it's the moment when a paratrooper makes his first jump , . . when a sailor steps aboard his first ship . . . when a marine storms his first beachhead . . when a fighter pilot spots his first enemy plane. In a different sense, it's the moment when a college graduate receives his sheepskin and suddenly becomes a definite part of America's pool of man and woman power—the pool from which is drawn tomorrow's executive and pro- ductive personnel. The Texas Gulf Coast has much to offer its young men and women who have acquired a background of formal education. The importance of the area's natural resources, its accessibility, its friendliness, its growing culture, the alert spirit of its towns and cities, the eagerness of its people to work and get ahead, all have been spotlighted by the war. These same qualities and characteristics will serve in equally good stead in the peaceful years ahead. It is the obligation of today's college graduates to accept fully the chal- lenge cf a new era of social, political and industrial development, for through advanced study in arts and industries they have qualified for active partici- pation in creating a better world—one which must be entirely worthy of the current sacrifices of our valiant armed forces. It is the proud, confident opinion of the management cf this company that such a challenge will not go unheeded. HOUSTON ’■ •SYSTEM FRANK C.
