-e- i EL RANCHO FOR NINETEEN HUNDRED FORTY-THREE Annual Publication of Texas College of A rts Industries KINGSVILLE, TEXAS COPYRIGHT .... 1943 Bess Hal Yakey _______-........... Editor in Chief Sarah Porter__________ _... _____Business Manager Here on the right, we introduce Henry and Henrietta Javelina who will take you on a personally conducted tour of war-time A L Okay—Take ’em away, Henry and Henrietta ! ! DEDICATION First, we wish to dedicate this book to the men and women from A I who are carrying out their duty to the nation and to themselves as freedom loving Americans in the armed services of the nation. Second, we wish to dedicate this book to President E. N. Jones, who has done so much to help A I make her contribution to the war effort. EDITOR’S NOTE Putting out an annual is never a simple task. Complicate it with film shortages, lack of manpower from El Rancho staff to print shop and you have trouble on your hands. Because films, cameras, engravers, and acids have gone to war, we were more determined to make this book a record of AM’s first year in the conflict. The boys we used to know are fighting for a great tradition, our annual is a tradition in its small way, and we wanted to keep it alive. dm.lru tnat ion. 6a t Chemical Testing Laboratory A neat brick veneer building, which is now complete, ’tho not finished in the photo . . . President Jones President Edward Newlon Jones first came to A I in the middle of last summer f rom Baylor University, where he served as Dean. He is scholarly, sincere and fair. These qualities have served to endear him to faculty and student alike. His spirit and determination have helped A I through one of the most chaotic years of its history. When war is finished this same spirit will go a long way toward making it a finer and stronger institution than ever before. On Opposite Page Dean Otto R. Kidd Abbott McCallum Nielsen The first full year of war saw many changes brought about on A I’s campus. Among these changes was the abandonment of all intercollegiate varsity competition. In its stead was adopted a Physical Fitness program which is designed to meet the needs of the public schools in the development of a wartime program of health and physical education. The new program was set up in collaboration with the United States Army, the United States Navy, United States Public Health Service and the physical fitness division of the Office of Defense Health and Welfare. To help establish this program in schools throughout South Texas, there was held a Physical Fitness Institute on this campus in November. The work of four men was outstanding in directing this institute. Mr. R. J. Kidd, director of all Interscholastic League athletics, Lt. Abbott, athletic officer of the Kingsville Naval Air Station, Bud McCallum, head of the Physical Edu- cation Department, and Dean O. R. Nielsen, who worked together in the institute in order to f urther the program in schools of this section. Bear, Gerdes, Jewett Rucker, McCallum Every man, woman and child is making sacrifices to help aid in the war. These men were denied the sport to which they are most devoted, that of football, and set about to physically condition every man on the campus for the armed service. Although different from the work these men knew best they did a marvelous job of adapting a physical education program to A I that would better suit our wartime needs. Assisting A. Y. McCallum, head of the department, were professor Cal Jewett, Melvin Bear, three-year letterman from Comanche, Jack Gerdes, three- year football letterman from El Campo, and Jack Rucker, also a three-year football letterman whose home is McAllen. Byron Fullerton and Billy Jo Brown, Sophomore Physical Education Majors, did the officials’ chores for the six-man football league in the fall. Members of the team were Jack Harris, Varsity Engineers and leading scorer with 92 points; Jiggs Tausch, BBA; Fred Chastain, Kappa Sigs, Dick Weekley, Aggie Varsity, and Billy Griffith, of the Freshman Engineers. Tradi- tionally, they hold office from one Homecoming until the next and the hope has been expressed that the next year’s event will be the biggest one of all with A T Exes home from the wars, in a world at peace. Editor’s Sw Song You might call El Rancho a long story, the kind it takes all year to tell. It’s a very live story, with laughs and suspense and everything a good yarn is supposed to have. Different people tell the story. There are those whose pictures are in it, there is the boy who took the pictures. Then there is the man who developed and printed them. There are the people who wrote copy and pasted. The engravers and printers are important, too. The editor held the threads of the story and tried to keep them all together, but if all those other people who helped tell it hadn’t cooperated so much, there would have been nothing she con Id do. Ten years ago, when our nation was plagued by depression jitters, one of the grim jokes of the day was to refer to college graduates attired in cap and gown as being “all dressed up with no place to go.” You graduates of '43 face no such dilem- ma. You are going places—and at once! Uncle Sam will take a majority of you boys, and many of you girls, directly into his uniformed services. Others of you will be absorbed by industries and professions essential to the war effort. You’ll all be contributing to the common cause of victory. And when victory is won, you will be granted additional opportunities to go places in the post-war world. New developments in that era promise to challenge the ingenuity, fore- sight, courage and intelligence of every indi- vidual. It is then that you, as college graduates, will appreciate most fully the scholastic prep- aration and academic background reflected in your sheepskins. The Honor Roll in the foyer of Jones Auditorium testifies to the patriot- ism of the students and former students of A I and to the value of the college in preparing for leadership. Some of the men whose names appear on that roll already have made the supreme sacrifice, and more gold stars will appear as the days go on. These young Americans now serving in all climes are going forward to victory under the banner of freedom, not as slaves driven into conflict by harsh masters, but as free men, aware of the value of human freedom and ready to protect it with their lives. Their intelligent conception of their rights and their duties under the constitution is the basis for that patriotism that shall carry us to V-I-C-T-O-R-Y KINGSVILLE PUBLISHING COMPANY The Home of Quality 'Printing I n So u th Texas Maurice W. BARRETT, Manager Uncle Sam has far more Adolf, Hlrohito and Benito probably aren’t sleeping well these nights. They know that America’s great and growing war production must inevitably turn the tide against them. America can do it because America has the electric power to do it. Electric power is basic to production. Electric power multi- plies marc-power and drives the machines that make tanks, planes, ships and guns. How much power has America? More than the three uneasy dictators and all their conquered countries combined— Alba- nia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria and the rest of the long, tragic list. Five times more than we had in the last war. No other nation even approaches Amer- ica’s power resources. And this has largely been accomplished the American way— by electric companies owned by millions of Americans and managed by American business men. The practical experience, the people and the plants of all these companies are dedicated today to making Uncle Sam so power-Jull that Axis aggressors will soon be nothing more than three busts in the Hall of Infamy! A lot of El Rancho's advertisers are tried and true, they have stuck by us year after year. Some of them are new, but we have an idea that along with those whose advertisements have been appearing in this book year after year, they will realize how much good will there is between the covers of El Rancho, and just how valuable it is. Their ads are recognized not only by those who subscribe to El Rancho, but by their friends, not for one year but for many.
