ufeV'-'l sm mmmmmm wiWmb: mmmmmMmwsm immmmmmm wmmmmmmm Annual Publication of the Students of The Texas College of Arts and Industries Dedication........... Because of their untiring efforts in building and maintaining a greater A I tor the students of today and tomorrow, because of their work in develop- ing their respective departments, and because of their interest in prospective graduates as individuals, EL RANCHO 1940 is dedicated to the Administration and Faculty of The Texas College of Arts and In- dustries. EDITOR Harriktt N aih xi Kidokr BUSINESS MANAGER Ai, Martin ASSOCIATE EDITOR W. B. Wfixis Seniors in the natural gas engineering department engaged in experimental work at the gas engineering laboratory. ... In the lecture room of the Science Building a freshman class tills the place to capacity. Science Completed in 1938, the A l Science Building was designed to provide for an ever increasing body of students . , . here, in its well equipped laboratories and spacious lecture rooms, busy young scientists learn under the guidance of skilled professors in the various fields . . , Not only an effecietit educational unit, the Science Building is an asset to the campus for its architectural attrac- tiveness as well. The hymn of Texas A and T, written by Mrs. Claire Ashford Ernst, “Hail A and I,” stands unchallenged as the true representation of the loyalty which each student feels. A salutation to old and new students alike, a tie that binds undergraduates with exes, a like between tradition and progress, it pictures in heartfelt words the purposes for which 1 exas A and I stands. Cousins Hall home lo one hundred girls, named or A Fs first president, L r, R, B, Cousins, Here, at Cousins Hall, are located all of tlie comforts and conveniences that add so much to the busy and eventful life of the A T co-ed . . These pictures are evidence enough of why A Ts residence halls are ranked among the most beau- tiful in Texas. . . . Cousins Hall is the center of co-educational social activities . . . here the life of the residents is enriched by the many parties throughout the year, and the small informal gatherings that are always in progress are as much a part of Cousins Hall as the rooms where- in they take place. —_______________ At Seale Hall may be found all of the facilities for a happy and eventful life, seen through the eyes of the occupants of this, A I s largest resi- dence hall for men. . . . Fun and study (yes, they do study pari of the time) and the experi- ence of working together in daily living provides a wholesome atmosphere for the many boys who call Seale Hall their home at A I. . . . The snapshots show the main office as welt as some of the individual rooms, noted for their interesting sessions on nearly every subject imaginable. Seale Hall named for A Ts second president, E. W. Seale, and the home of one hundred boys during the year. To tin C.A.A. flyers this Is a familiar view of the A I campus. Here they look down upon the southernmost senior college in the United States,, including among its facilities the onlv Natural Gas Engineering Department in America. A I is one of the four colleges in Texas which offers the Smith- Hughes certificate in Agriculture and Home Economics. Music Conservatory which houses the A I Music Depart- ment, Our music department boasts one of the finest choirs in the United States, the A I A Cappella Choir, as well as an outstanding Male Chorus and the popular Javelina Marching Band, Last year the choir was one of six choirs in the country honored with an invitation to appear before the National Conference of Music Edu- cators in St, Louis. President J. O. Loftin This yearbook marks the passing of a very profitable and enjoyable year for the student body of A. and I. College. Yet deep in the consciousness of every student is the realization of the turmoil of the youth of other lands and a wonder if their bitterness will soon he shared with the young men and women of America. The wanton lawlessless of nations is the fruit of unstable peoples led by over- ambitious war lords. Many of these peoples once enjoyed the liberties, peace, and luxuries that Americans still retain. But the college youth of America should draw on their training and judgment in being the first to detect subversive ten- daides within their own group and thus avoid a fertile soil for seeds of dan- gerous “ isms.” The administration, faculty, and student body join in praise of the El Rancho staff for this yearbook. All will keep this book with growing appreciation as the years crowd our lives into such short spans. Our hope is that good judgment, patriotic hearts, and the Divine Will may preserve tor all of us the fortunate heritages we now possess. J. O. LOFTIN Board of Regents H. In these pictures we see them in some of their most characteristic and some rather unconventional poses. Dr. Kriege! and Mr. Mclntire swap hats, giving a sort of Laurel and Hardy effect . . . Mr. Peurifov, head of the Engineering Department, demonstrates the more intricate uses of the slipstick, proving that so much water can be pumped so high in so long . . . Buster Moore, manager of the text book room, offers his services willingly to Miss Malone as well as to all the students of the college . . . Miss Bible’s Home Eco. students learn the art of fitting their own clothes as a part of the well-planned Home Economics program . . . Dr. Nierman works dili- gently in his laboratory in the new science building . . . The class in aeronautics under the CAA pro- gram seem unusually absorbed in their work . . . Mr. Sinclair appears a bit weary as he stares over his glasses at the end of the day , , . Mr. Micheal didn't even get to finish what he started to say. . . . Drs. Micheal and Cross meet for the afternoon conffab minus Dr. Nierman . . . Librarian Allen as usual is probably saying, “Let's get quiet in here, please.” People go through registration and by the end of the day look very, very weary. Student Council Kenneth Grimes President Ideas of a progressive student government among A, and I. students first came into importance in the past few years, It has been the aim of the Student Council of 1939-1940 to main- tain and build these ideas. One of the major projects under- taken this year was the complete revision of the handbook so that each student in the college might have an up-to-date copy and become familiar with the constitution under which the government of the student body is handled. On April 9, the nucleus of the Student Council for 1940- 1941 were elected. These members are Murrel Steigler, Presi- dent ; Robert Porcher, Vice-President; Charles Millikin, Sec- retary-Treasurer ; Clyde Pryor, Editor of South Texan; and W. IJ. Willis, Editor of El Rancho. And the freshmen reveal how immodest they really are. . . . Clinton tries to rouse a little enthusiasm . . freshman girls’ Shirley Temple parade . . . Helen Harriet leads, looking very grim. Ruth sucks her thumb, and Idabell totes a pink bunny rabbit . . . Another view of the shirt-tail parade; the fish sorta took over the town. Unusually placid view of A I’s campus, with Grace, Sid, and Elizabeth in the foreground . , . What’s this? Marvin, don’t you want to intro- duce us? . . . Troy and Ethel answer the dinner bell . . . Bluntzer and Bob are seen in silhouette . . . Down town promenade . . . Walter and Shannon obligingly lead the way. Homecoming Annual Homecoming assembly November 18 , . . Henry Javelina, the team mascot, in ‘full dress'’ . . . the Marching Hand parades at the half . . baton twirlers Mantel and Meyer at the pep rally . . . section of the crowd at the homecoming game between the Javelinas and St, Mary’s Rat- tlers ... at the dance afterward, with Baron Dakin providing the music . . . sponsored by the Kx- S t udent s As so c i at i on. Delta Theta pledges pose . , . and here is a view of the Delta Theta dinner given by the pledges for their “big sisters” . . Eldon had a hard time pushing his face into this scene at the Hallowe'en dinner at Loftin Hall, complete with black cats, yellow pumpkins and dim lights . . . Queen Anna Lynn gra- ciously presides over the coffee service at the All-College Christmas Party. Distinguished visitors brought to A I’s campus during the year . . . Cornelia Otis Skinner caught with a blank stare, gave a series of amusing sketches , , , European correspondent H. R, Knickerbocker looks grim . . . maybe he is contemplating the disas- ters of dictatorship , . cross section of the audience showing all too clearly the inadequate improvised auditorium in the gym . . . N. Kostrukoff and his celebrated Don Cossack Choir were also on the A T list for this season's series—the agile dagger dancers. Christmas at Loftin Hall Christmas Annual presentation of “The Messiah” by the combined A I Choirs and Chorus, with Riley conducting . . . Ave Sue Martin sings a recitative . . . A Cappella Choir at the All-College Christmas party. Christmas comes to Loftin Mali, with the annual holiday formals . , . informal shot of chaperones and special guests at the dance given by the Scale Hall boys for the fair residents of Cousins Hall . , , “Red” Pryor looks distinctly deserted — vvhassa- matter, didn't Santa leave you that I ii’ Model T you wanted. Red? . . . Oscar Cabra’s orchestra plays from the veranda of a cleverl}’ improvised colonial mansion. . . . Residence hall heads, Joe and Shelly, lead the grand march through the arched gate of the garden ... a well-whiskered Santa Claus presents remembrances to good little children including Queenie Anna Lynn and FFA Sweetie Doris . . , “After the ball was over—” and the boys can have the confetti! . . . there ought to he enough here to start a nice bonfire, at least—but it’s far into the night by now, and even the little Christmas trees look weary. Engineers and Aggies All-College Dances Two of the largest organizations on the campus are well represented in these pictures of the Engi- neers and Aggies , , , George Hamilton played for the Engineers’ Dance, pictured in the first column, from top to bottom . . . the maestro plays a sweet fiddle . . . shot of the dancers who thronged in the gym , . . Engineers Sweetheart, lovely Harriett Kidder, is presented with the Engineer’s compass and triangle and a bouquet of roses by Kay O’Hara, Engineer prexy ... At the annual barn dance, Aggie Sweetheart Helen Meyer is intro- duced by Prexy Benny Oefingcr . . . farm lads and lassies swarmed the gym which looked barn- like . . . “best-dressed” couple are awarded crisp onc-dollar bills . . . Chris is evidently overwhelmed . , the wearer of the stunning calico ensemble is Martha Ann Troy, who can’t decide whether it’s funny or not! These interesting scenes were not printed for blackmail purposes . . , they were taken in good faith at the Press Club’s annual Valentine Dance . . . the kisses were the forfeit for a dime entrance fee . . . and most were minus dimes . . . Brooks closes his eyes and Jo Lc can't suppress that giggle . . . Dancers at the Aggie Christmas Dance . . . Very good. Sacks! If Billy wasn’t in the way you could see Billie . . , Coy Miss McKenzie with Va. “the sheik” Campbell at the W.S.A, Manless Dance while Hayseed Carson looks on. Snow of 1940 One of the loveliest pictures taken on that snowy day was this of Betty Jane McCallum. daughter of Coach and Mrs. A. Y. McCallum, and beloved little sweetheart'1 of the T-Association. A11 unbroken expanse of white from the Administration Building looking toward Loftin Hall and Seale Hall . . . palm leaves laden with snow . . . the first some South Texas students had ever seen. That Same Memorable Day Still More Snow Fantastic but beautiful — snow on the athels . . , Looking toward the gym, music conservatory on one side . , . Eugenia keeps her feet dry on a bundle of twigs . , , More snow-play, which took up most of this unforgettable day . . , “Alabama” comes smiling up the walk . . . Football Headman” Ten years ago in the fall of 1929, Bud McCallum came to A I from Wichita Falls to take over the coaching duties from Dean Smith. Exactly ten years from the day of his debut as head coach, he was called before the Board of Directors and given a vote of confidence. “Bud’s record speaks for itself. His teams of ’31, 32, ‘33, and '34, were undefeated except by stronger Southwestern Con- ference teams. The Javelinas of 1933 tied for the TIAA cham- pionship and won the title in 1934. Since the formation of the Alamo Conference in 1936, the Javelinas, under Bud’s tutelage, have either won the title or tied for it. In ‘36 and ’37, the Javelinas were co-champions with St. Mary’s. In 1938 they reigned supreme as Alamo champs. The past season again found them at the top of the ladder as co- champions with West Texas State. Before coming to A I, Bud was coach at Wichita Falls High where his talent first asserted itself when his learn went to the State semi-finals. Coach McCallum got his first taste of football at the University of Texas where he played from 1918 to 1921. He was an All-Southwestern fullback in 1921. Helpers Assistants to Bud McCallum are Cal Jewett on the left and Maurice Pipkin on the right. Cal made his debut at A T with Bud in 1929. Maurice is starting on his second year as Bud’s helper. Both share coaching honors with headman Bud and are greatly responsible for the strong defensive lines that the Hogs offer to their opponents. Steinke Clicks Off a First Down ! Javelinas Drop Opener to San Jose, 9-0 Inaugurating a new type of schedule that featured bigger, better, and tougher teams, the Javelinas journeyed to San Jose, California, in September, to meet “Pop” Warner’s famed Spartans of San Jose State, September 18. San Jose, the nation's highest scoring team in 1939 and one of the best teams on the West Coast, found the Piggies from South Texas their toughest foe of the year. For fifty-two minutes the Hogs battled the Spartans to a standstill, only to see their efforts go for naught as San Jose successfully kicked a field goal and penetrated the Javelina goal line for a score in the last eight minutes of play. The Javelinas did not have possession of the ball long enough during the game to present much of an offensive show lor the Coastal fans, but what a defensive spectacle they did offer! Four times the strong A I forward wall halted Spartan drives before they materialized into touchdown marches. The Californians failed to penetrate the Javelina 15-yard line until late in the third quarter, and then went begging as the Hog line stopped the attack cold. The Spartans began their scoring when Ken Cook came into the game in the closing minutes to attempt a field goal. His kick from the 26-yard line was accurate and good for three points. Several minutes later, the Californians again found themselves in scoring position after intercepting an A tv! pass. Several line plunges were good for short gains, then Carlton Peregoy knifed through the Hog line for a 14-yard gain before being spilled on the 5-yard line. A penalty assessed the Hogs for too many timeouts, advanced the ball to the 2-yard line, from which point Peregoy plunged over for the second Spartan score. Cook's try for conversion after touchdown was wide and the game ended with the Javelinas on the short end of a 9-to-0 score. Warren Arnold End Melvin Bear Back Andy Brannon Tackle Stuart Clarkson Center Carl Dillon Buford Dugger Cecil Evans Wallace Franks Back Back Tackle Tackle Hogs Annihilate Hillbillies, 20-3 Scoring three touchdowns in the second half of their game with Daniel Baker, the Javelinas de- feated the Hillbillies 2(1 to 3, in their annual game played on the A l gridiron. September 30. Play during the first half of the game was centered mostly in A l territory as the Hillbillies capi- talized on numerous breaks ' Strong defensive play on the part of the Javelinas killed all scoring threats that the Hillbillies offered and at no time were the Hogs in serious trouble. The Hillbillies drew the game's first blood when Stewart booted a field goal through the uprights for three points in the opening minutes of the second half. The three-point lead enjoyed by Daniel Baker was short lived, however, as the Javelinas swung into action with their powerhouse style of play. Taking the kick-off following the Daniel Baker score, the Hogs marched down the field to the Billies’ 48-yard line on plays strictly of the power type. With the ball on the 48, Steinke broke loose on a spectacular run to cross the double stripes standing up, for the first A I score. The Hogs scored their second touchdown in the third quarter as Mattingly climaxed an 80-yard drive with a plunge over the Daniel Baker goal line. Hall converted the extra point. A blocked Daniel Baker punt recovered by the Javelinas on the Hillbilly 25-yard line paved the way for the third Hog score. After advancing the pigskin to the Hillbilly 10-yard line, Hall plunged over for a marker, only to have the play called back as both teams were off-side. Two plays later, Mattingly carried the ball over for the third and final Hog score of the game. Hall again converted the extra point and the Hillbillies were sent home with the short end of a 20-to-3 score. No Gain On This Play! J. W. A l had an easy night against the hapless Lobos, running up 26 points on the scoreboard while the Lobos were amassing 7. Sul Ross held the Javelinas to a scoreless first quarter, but weakened in the second period as the Hogs’ attack started clicking. Steinke started the night’s scoring by taking a 25-yard pass from Hall, tossed from the Lobo 48-yard line, and racing the remaining 23 yards untouched for the first score of the game. The Lobos tied the score several minutes later when they scored from the Hog 10-yard line after recovering a Piggie fumble. A short pass from Scott to Riggs was good for the tally. The Javelinas started the second half with a bang, scoring in the first three minutes of play after receiving the kickoff. Mattingly and Steinke alternated at carrying the ball with Mattingly going over for the touchdown. Hall set the stage for the third Hog score with several short passes to Lang. With the ball on the Sul Ross 25-yard stripe, Hall faked a pass and ran to the Lobo 4-vard stripe, from where, with his for- ward progress stopped, he latera led to Grimes who scored. The javelinas scored their last touchdown with a pass from Hall to Henry with Henry crossing the goal line untouched. Hall kicked the extra point, giving the Hogs a 26-7 victory. Javelinas Scoring Against St, Mary's! Gangway — Here Comes Steinke! Javs Stop Favored Sam Houston Kats, 7-0 Football stock of the Javelinas took a sharp rise, Saturday, October 14, when the Hogs “took the heavily favored Rearkat eleven from Sam Houston into camp with a 7-to-0 victory. A rough and tumble affair from start to fin ah, the game was witnessed by one of the largest crowds of the year as approximately 6,000 fans turned out for the tilt. The stage for the lone score of the game was set up late in the first quarter when “Sacks Mat- tingly intercepted one of Barnett’s passes on the Hog 40-yard stripe. The ground gaining combination of Steinke and Mattingly again began clicking behind the block- ing of the Hog forwards and the ball was advanced to the Rearkat 4-yard line. An off-side penalty cost the Kats an additional 2 yards, putting the ball on the 2-yard marker, from where Mattingly crashed over for the score on a powerhouse play, Dugger converted the extra point, giving the Javelinas a 7-point lead which turned out to be the margin of victory when the last gun was fired, ending the game. The victory represents an achievement for the Javelinas, it being their first over the Bearkats in three years. The game was an interesting and colorful one from the opening whistle to the final gun. Both teams showed an abundance of defensive strength, with A I having a slight edge. Barnett, ace backfield star for the Kats. put on an aerial bombardment that thrilled the crowd, as he tossed 39 passes during the fray. Steinke brought the crowd to its feet in the fourth quarter with a dazzling 67-yard dash to the Kat 9-yard line. The play was called back, however, and the Javelinas assessed a 5-yard penalty for being offside. Kari, Harris Guard Sam Hawks Back J. W. The Teachers played a strictly defensive game, never offering a serious threat to the Javelina goal line. Play during the first half was centered between the 40-yard markers, neither team being able to penetrate the other’s defense. San Marcos reached into their bag of tricks late in the second quarter and came up with the old “Statue of Liberty” play, carrying to the Hog 30-yard line before being checked. The third and fourth quarters saw the Javclinas repeatedly drive to within striking distance of the Bobcat goal line only to bog down in their own errors. Numerous fumbles cost the Javelinas four touchdowns that were virtually assured. The feature of the game was the defensive play offered by both elevens with neither being able to crack the other with any appreciable success. Arthur Lang End Roscoe Marls Guard Francis Mattingly Back Charles Moyer End A£d Halts Schreiner, 21-14 Taking advantage of several Mountaineer miscues, the Javelinas downed a fighting Schreiner Institute team in Corpus Christi, October 28, when the two teams met in their annual grudge” tilt played on Clark Field. When the final whistle sounded and the battle smoke had cleared away, the Hogs were leading the Mountaineers, 21 to 14. Two of the three Javetina touchdowns came as the result of recovered Schreiner fumbles deep in Cadet territory. Direct power plays were used by the Hogs in crossing the Schreiner goal line on both occasions. The third A I score came as the result of an 80-yard power drive that had its beginning on the A I 20-vard stripe. Mattingly crashed over for the score from the 1-yard line. The Cadets scored their first touchdown on a long pass from Smith to Driskell on the opening play of the second quarter The second Mountaineer marker was made on the kickoff following the second A I score. Blackburn took the kickoff, raced to the Schreiner 30-yard line, and lateraled to Judd as he was being tackled. Judd galloped the remaining 70 yards untouched for a touchdown. The Mountaineers came from behind to knot the score twice during the game, but the Javelinas superior powerhouse attacks were not to be denied. The Piggies rang up 13 first downs to the Moun- taineers' 3, Pigs Tie Buffs in Scoreless Battle Before a few fans and fewer students, the Javelinas and the Buffaloes of West Texas State Teach- ers College battled to a scoreless tie for the Alamo Conference championship, Thanksgiving Day, No- vember 30, on the A I gridiron. Football fans of South Texas saw one of the greatest games ever unreeled as the boys from Can- yon, Texas, opened up with an aerial attack against the Hogs that featured the passing of FlippiiT Foster Watkins, Four times the Buffaloes were within striking distance of the Javelina goal line, only to see vic- tory taken away as the result of penalties. The Hogs presented the game’s first scoring threat as the combination of Mattingly and Steinke There Goes Mattingly! shot both barrels as the}’ marched from their own 30-yard line down to the Huffs' 21-yard stripe. Here the Buffaloes tightened up their defense and sent the Javclinas begging. Taking the ball over on their own 21-yard line, the Buffs, with Watkins in the starring role, passed their way to the A I 10-yard line before a 15-yard penalty ended their scoring threat. Mattingly turned loose a terrific boot that carried 100 yards with the roll, going over the Buff goal line for an automatic touch back. Again in the second period, the passing of Watkins carried the Buffs deep into Javelina territory. With the ball resting on the 2-yard line, the West Texans were penalized 15 yards to end their sec- ond scoring threat. In the last half, the Buffaloes trampled down into pay territory once more, but saw their scoring threat evaporate as Kenny Grimes intercepted one of Watkins’ short passes. First downs stood 8 to 4 in favor of the West Texans. Watkins tossed 57 passes during the game, completing 22 of them for a total of 14 yards. Hogs Held to Scoreless Tie by Jacks Playing on a muddy field in a downpour of rain, the Hogs were held to a scoreless tie by the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin, November 10, in a game played at Nacogdoches, Texas. The game, marred by the rain, gave neither team a chance to turn on their running attack, mak- ing the affair a punting duel between Mattingly of A I and Roquemore of the jacks. The only real scoring threat of the Javelinas came in the first quarter after Grimes had recovered Yates’ fumble on the Axemen’s 29-yard line. Mattingly and Dugger plunged the ball to the Lumber- jacks’ 19-yard line, from which point Dugger’s attempt for a field goal fell short. The Axemen started an aerial attack in the second period which proved effective, carrying the ball to the Javelina 15-yard stripe before Jones intercepted one of McG raw's passes to end the threat. Mattingly punted the Hogs out of danger from that point. Austin received another scoring chance late in the final period when Hopson, Lumberjack end, re- covered an attempted lateral pass from Steinke to Grimes on the Javelina 15-yard line. The powerful Hog forward wall held and at the end of four downs the Axemen found themselves holding a four- yard loss. First downs stood 9 to 4 in favor of the Javelinas. The Hogs also had the best of things in total yardage gained, rolling up some 137 yards to 41 for Stephen F, Austin. Tut Hogs ox Another March Javelinas Crush Crusaders, 26-6 Fresh from their victory over St, Mary’s, the Javelinas skipped up Austin way, November 24, to clash with the Crusaders of St, Edward's University in a non-conference affair. Favored over the Hogs, the Saints appeared to have the situation well in hand as they grabbed an early lead in the opening minutes of play when Phil “Goon” Reynolds tore off 77 yards in a spectacular dash for a Crusader touchdown. The Saints held their 6-point lead until late in the sec- ond quarter. Kenny Grimes started the Hogs' scoring spree against the Crusaders when he intercepted a St. Edwards pass deep in Crusader territory in the second quarter and crossed the double stripes standing up. Dugger converted extra point to give the Javelinas a lead they never lost. The third quarter saw Steinke almost single-handedly stage a drive that resulted in the Hogs’ second score, Mattingly climaxed the 43-yard drive by plunging over for the marker. A 26-yard run early in the fourth quarter started the Piggies goal ward again, A penalty set the Crusaders back to their 12-yard line, from where Hall and Mattingly combined to score another Hog counter with Mattingly again in the scoring role. A brilliant 59-vard run by Hall to the Saints’ 21-yard line, set the stage for the final Javelina score. Mattingly and Hall again combined to cover the remaining distance to the goal line with Mattingly again successfully plunging across. The Piggies missed a scoring chance early in the game when they marched to the St, Edward 4- vard line only to lose possession of the ball on a fumble. First downs stood 17 to 7 in favor of the Javelinas. The remainder of the team was composed entirely of newcomers who were playing their first season on the hardwood for A L Out of a thirteen-game schedule, the Hogs managed to win four while they were dropping nine. The Jave- linas played six Alamo Conference games, winning one and losing five. Three of their losses were, suf- fered at the hands of the St. Mary Rattlers and the other two to West Texas State. Although the season was a failure as far as victories are concerned, it did give needed experience to those who will return next year. Prospects for a winning team next year are very bright with all but two of this year’s team returning. Randall Ham. Mklvin Bear Phillip Marshall Johnny Vargo Jack Thompson Bill Terry Basketball January 4 saw the Hogs open their basketball season against the Mexico City Y.M.C.A. cagers. The Javelinas lost no time in getting things going and at the the end of 40 minutes of play had bagged their first victory by a score of 32 to 31. The lads from Mexico, smarting under the loss, came back the following night to down the Javelinas AS to 42 and cut the Hog victory march short. The unhumble Humble Oilers invaded the A I gym after dark on January 12, and did not leave until they had trimmed the Hogs with a barrage of field goals and foul shots. Then, with a 5l-to-29 victory safely under their belts, they re- tired, leaving a grieved A T student body behind. The Sinton Independents proved to be no match for the Javelinas, who stopped enroute to San Marcos to play them. The Hogs were getting up steam for the Bobcats and easily bowled the Independents, 38 to 28, The Javelinas used all their steam at Sinton and didn't have much left when they arrived at San Marcos. The Bobcats were in excellent form and didn’t have much trouble in downing the Hogs, 47 to 29, Basketball January 29 and 3D saw the Javelinas take a double dose on the chin when they engaged the St. Mary Rattlers in a two-game series. The Rattlers took the first game in easy fashion, 49 to 29. The second game found the Hogs still on their heels and the San Antonians walked off with a 43-to-32 win. The West Texas State Buffaloes, billed as the “World's Tallest Basketball Team,” lived up to advance publicity when they met the Javelinas on the nights of February 5 and 6, With their advantage in height plus their skill in handling the ball, the Buffs had little trouble in subduing the Hogs in both games, 67-20 and 62-28, The San Marcos Bobcats decided to give the Javelinas a second chance to defeat them on February 16, but it was “no soap.” The Hogs were still in their slump and the Cats took them into camp with an easy 38-to-17 victory. The Javelinas sprang a mild surprise in their final series of the year with St. Mary’s, when they downed the Rattlers in their first game, 39-30. The Rat- tlers came back the following night, however, to even things up as they defeated the Hogs 34 to 29. Probably the most interesting game played by the Javelinas during the season took place when they met the Whiskered W izards, a professional team. The Wizards spent the majority of their time entertaining the tans with their trick shots and tomfoolery instead of watching the clock and ringing up tallies. The Hogs managed to come out on the long end of the score, however, 46 to 38. BASKETBALL TEAM MEMBERS AND THEIR POSITIONS Hall . Sweeping through their six-game schedule without a loss, the Engineers had little trouble in keep- ing their record clean. The Engineers defeated the Aggies 12 to 0, the B.B.A. Club on penetrations, Seale Hall 18 to 0, Spanish Club 26 to 0, and held the Flato House to a scoreless deadlock. The N.Y.A. Club forfeited their game to (he Engineers to give the Slide Rule boys a perfect season. Intramural Basketball Crown Taken By Engineers • • With the Intramural Football crown tucked safely in their trophy room, the Engineers hung up their football togs and brought out their basketball uniforms for the hardboard season. The close of the first half of the basketball race found the Engineers perched safely on the top of the roost, with a perfect record. The second half, however, found the Engineers' luck changed, as they ended in a four-way tie with the Aggies, Freshmen, and Flato House, for the loop lead. Engineers’ Winning Football Team Sports The Engineers proved their metal, however, winning the playoff to cop the crown. Mainstays of the Engineers’ team were Frank Jones, Elgin Bowers, Trnett Hollis, John Huffman, ami Bryan Mullens, Other Intramural Sports • • • As this annual goes to press, winners of the Baseball. Track. Tennis, Golf, and Swimming divi- sions of the Intramural Sport program have not been decided. Keen competition is foreseen in all the events and it is with regret that we close these brief pages picturing the Intramural sport life of our college. Intramural Basketball Game Track Unable to bold up publication until after all track meets have been held, FI Rancho is able to give only a preview to a sport that is rapidly gaining fa vor throughout the Southwest. This year finds more interest in track and field events at A l than has ever been shown before. The javelinas journeyed up to Fort Worth, March 16, to enter the hat Stock Show's 18th Annual Exposition Field and Track Meet, held there. Although they did not set the sport world on fire with their feats, the Hogs did crash the headlines when they defeated all Southwestern Conference entrants in the Football Shuttle relay. April 13 will find the javelinas entered in the important Texas Relays. April 26 will find them engaged in a triangular meet at San Marcos, involving San Marcos, Fast Texas State, and Texas A I. Rivalry with St. Mary's and West Texas State will be resumed May 10 in San Antonio for the cham- pionship of the Alamo Conference. Tennis With six letter men returning from last year's championship squad, the Ja velina netmen are con- ceded an excellent chance of retaining their title again this year. As El Rancho was prepared and written before the tennis season got under way, it is impossible to give the results of their schedule. Included in the list of lettermen are Bill Johnson, Bob Griffiths, Robert Host, Franklin Whitson, Curtis Lawrence, and Roy Dough tv. Other men who are making strong bids for a berth on the team as El Rancho goes to press arc Stokes Holmes, Elmo Wright, Jack Cook, Bill Kennedy, and Bobby Dietz. Matches have been booked with San Marcos for the latter part of March and tentative matches have been scheduled with Alamo Conference teams later in the spring. Golf With only one lettcrman lost from last year's team, the Javelinas arc bearing down in their prac- tice sessions as El Rancho prepares to go to press, with high hopes of capturing the Alamo Confer- ence title. Matches have been scheduled with Schreiner Institute, St, Mary’s, West Texas State, and other Alamo Conference teams. Tentative matches have been scheduled with several Southwestern Con- ference teams. Members of the team include Max Smith, Gerald Wei smart, Rufus Chote, Maurice Williams, William Cousins, and Edward Eads. Golf being another sport whose outcome is not known until late in the spring, it is impossible for El Rancho to give the final results of the scheduled matches. Boxing Organization of a glove team was attempted this year for the first time in the hist or}' of A L Following the enthusiasm that greeted the annual “TM Association bouts, it became more or less imperative that a boxing team be organized. Williard Brown, former third ranking welterweight of the world, offered his services as a coach and the mitt team had its beginning. Unfortunately, however, the Javelinas entered their first matches with the Texas University Long- horns before they were in the best of form and consequently did not fare so well, losing every bout. In a return engagement, the Hogs won two of their six bouts, fought in the A I gym. Interest in the sport is rapidly increasing and from all indications, it appears certain to occupy a definite place on the A I sports program. Those included on the team include Frances Mattingly, Dick Reese, Tat Shoemate, Roy Miller, Leo Brown, and “Heavy” Moody. The ball game is over, but from the look on Stokes’ face it was not won . . . It has been our aim to include in EL RANCHO 1940 reminders of the more outstanding inci- dents of the year and it is our hope that in the future, as you flick through these pages, you will recall many pleasant memories of the associations you made on the A I campus. Because of the splendid cooperation on the part of the students and the faculty EL RANCHO has been a source of infinite pleasure to the editor. And so as the last word, we hope you like it!
