Deluxe Burgerbar serves up ' 50s, ' 60s atmosphere at A M by Lisa Kastensmidt Paper starts to shuffle as the profes¬ sor dismisses the eleven o’clock class. It’s now 11:50 and your stomach is growling for food. “Hey, let’s head to ‘Deluxe’ for lunch,” yells a voice be¬ hind you. Next thing you realize you’ve crossed University Drive safely and are walking under a neon sign saying ‘The Deluxe Burgerbar’. Suddenly the at¬ mosphere changes as the sound of Bud¬ dy Holly rings in your ears from a juke box in the corner. As you seat yourself at the formica and steel tables, the com¬ plete atmosphere of the 1950’s and 60’s surrounds you. “I like to do places that when you walk in it’s like you’re somewhere else,” says Danny Anz, co-owner of ‘Deluxe’ along with his wife Cheryl. Although ‘Deluxe’ has only been open since August 1982, it has already proven popular with students. “ ‘Deluxe’ is a restaurant with its “I like to go places that when you walk in it’s like you’re somewhere else” — Danny Anz, co-owner of ‘Deluxe’. own personality,” senior Armando San¬ chez says. “I like ordering a Deluxe with a tall mug of draft root beer and going to the free juke box and putting on an old Buddy record.” In addition to their hamburgers, ‘De¬ luxe’ is also well known for their faji¬ tas, nachos, and imported beer. “They have any beer you could want there,” senior Brent Sanders says, re¬ ferring to the over 70 imported beers they carry. As an employee of ‘Deluxe’, junior Jackie Shaw commented, “I enjoy it. I always see my friends come in, and it just feels comfortable to be here.” In the evening after the sun sets, the neon lights show through the blinds covering the windows. They give the lasting impression of a restaurant at a 1950’s drive-thru like you see on the old movies. Before leaving, you stop off at the counter and order two scoops of ice cream. As you walk out to your car you notice an old weighing scale by the door. After all you have eaten, thank goodness it doesn’t work! Activities 27
