Nation Chooses Reagan Betsey Kelley American voters, frustrated over the Iranian hostage situa¬ tion, the economy, and the United States diminishing role in world affairs, deciced they wanted a change. On November 4, 1981, Republican Ronald Reagan was elected 40th president of the United States. The victory was so lop¬ sided for the Republicans that President Jimmy Carter conced¬ ed the election before the polls had closed across the nation. On the Texas A M campus, various University organiza¬ tions pushed for voter registra¬ tion. Students campaigned for ★ the Republican or Democratic n ' A ' causes. Others supported John Anderson, an Independent, or Ed Clark, the Libertarian Party candidate. On Jan. 20, 1981 Reagan took office. His supporters called the X ' K ' ' A ' 1 Republican landslide “a man¬ date for change.” Elections 19
