Former Senator Ralph Yarborough gave a dynamic talk on the people’s loss of faith in the government due to unfilfilled campaign promises. Fall Speakers of Statewide Interest 4 SENATOR MIKE McKOOL ▼ SENATOR TOM CREIGHTON Political Forum presented Senator Mike Mc- Kool, Senator Tom Creighton, and Mayor Louie Welch. McKool delivered a talk knocking the state in¬ surance system. He stated that it was set up to discourage initiative and competition. Creighton spoke on state abortion legislation. The Texas legislature does not “want to promote or condemn abortion, but to face the reality of the urgency of immediate legislation.” Using sta¬ tistics involving fatal illegal abortions to empha¬ size his point, he explained that the bill proposed would increase the penalty for performing illegal abortions from two to five years in hope of de¬ priving the abortionist of a victim. City government was the topic of Houston Mayor Louie Welch. He cited the Mayor-Council plan as the reason for non-partisanship politics and a limited tax burden in comparison with the country’s other metropolitan areas. Welch as¬ pires toward a Houston which is “a good place to live.” 4 MAYOR LOUIE WELCH 25
