MALL OF FA UE. J. W. DOVER ROLLINS ' 17 Rollins was a member of the Class of 1917 who in lieu of finals took the oath as 2nd Lieutenant at Leon Springs. He received his B.S. in Agriculture. “Dough received All-Conference recognition as a football back in 1915-16 and served as captain of the 1915 team. He held the rank of captain in the Cadet Corps. He was a member of the Ross Volunteers, Hunt County Club, Agronomy Club, and the “T” Associa¬ tion. In addition to being coach and administrator at Texas A M, he also served as a member of the A M Athletic Council, the NCAA Track and Field Rules Committee, Dean of Men and Acting Athletic Director. Rollins was elected to Helms Foundation Athletic Hall of Fame in 1 958, and was made Honorary Ad¬ miral in the Texas Navy, 1950. DR. SAM H. SANDERS JR. ’23 Dr. Sanders, being distinguished in many as¬ pects, also had the privilege of being a member of the 1921 team that defeated Centre College in the Dixie Classic on January 2, 1922. He held records for the 440-yard dash in 1921, was high jump champion in 1921, and was captain of the track team in 1922. In 1970, Dr. Sanders was presented the Distin¬ guished Alumni Award for his outstanding achieve¬ ments in the field of medicine. He is listed in the American Man of Medicine and Who’s Who in the Southwest. He also has established a President’s Endowed Scholarship at Texas A M. MAJ. GEN. JAMES EARL RUDDER ’32 For the last ten years of his life Earl Rudder served as President of Texas A M University. Dur¬ ing his administration the all-male, military college changed to a co educational university. Born May 6, 1910, Rudder earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial education and lettered in foot¬ ball at Texas A M. He organized and trained the 2nd Ranger Battalion which scaled the cliffs of Pointe du Hoe during the D-Day invasion of Europe. He became president of the Texas A M University System in 1965. He established the President’s Scholarship Pro¬ gram at Texas A M and in 1970, received the Dis¬ tinguished Alumni Award posthumously based on his World War II record and subsequent administra¬ tive accomplishments. ARTHUR D. ADAMSON ’39 Coach Adamson holds the all-time record for ten¬ ure of an Aggie coach in any sport, having served continually for 35 years as the head swimming coach. On the faculty ladder he climbed from stu¬ dent-instructor to a full professorship before the mandatory retirement rule caught up with him in 1969. He has since been named professor emeritus. An immigrant from New Zealand, Coach Adam¬ son twice won National Championships in the 100- yard freestyle and set new National records. From 1927 through 1934, he never was defeated in the freestyle sprint events in A.A.U. meets. His 1939 and 1965 water polo teams won the national championships in that sport. His water polo teams set a record 95 games won to 1 9 lost. His swimming teams have won two Southwest Confer¬ ence Championships, tied one, and finished second 18 times. 26
