Acting President Gen. Alvin R. Luedecke President Alvin R. Luedecke first came to Texas A M from the small West Texas town of Eldorado. He was graduated from A M in I 932 and, after a distinguished career in the Air Force and government service, returned to the university in 1968. Luedecke’s career began as an Army field artillery officer in 1 932, but a year later he transferred to the Air Force. During World War II he was named assistant chief of air staff for the China-Burma-India Theater and at the age of 34 was promoted to brigadier general. He advanced to air planner with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1946 and then in 1 949 was named executive director of the Atomic Energy Com¬ mission Military Liaison Committee. By 1 954, he had advanced to chief of the Armed Forces Special Weapons project. General Luedecke retired from the Air Force in 1958 to become general manager of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. After serving in that post nearly six years, he was named deputy director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at California Insti¬ tute of Technology. Upon return to his alma mater. General Luedecke was named associate dean of engi¬ neering and engineering research coordinator. In 1 969 he assumed additional responsibilities as associate director of the university’s Texas Engineering Experiment Station. On March 30, 1 970, a week after General Rudder’s death, he was named acting presi¬ dent of Texas A M University. A classmate and close friend of the late president, General Luedecke has vowed to continue the many worthwhile objectives established for the uni¬ versity by Mr. Rudder. General Luedecke has deep feelings about the A M student body: “We want to provide here the mechanism for the people to be heard, face the problems they feel they have and provide the best answer to them. Our students are dedicated to learning about the world before they go about to change it. We must make our work responsive to the current needs of the students and to the state and nation.’’ 17

Albritton Jr., Sterling C. Evans, S. B. Whittenburg, H. C. Heldenfels. The Board of Directors is the governing body of The Texas A M University System. It con¬ sists of nine members who are appointed by the governor, with the approval of the Senate to serve staggered terms of six years. This gov¬ erning body is responsible for the orderly and constructive growth of the system, which di¬ rectly or indirectly affects every person in the state. During the year the board convenes at five regularly scheduled meetings and an occasion¬ al special session to discuss and take action on the administrative affairs of the system. It sets the guidelines for the operation of Texas A M University and all of its various branches.
