College of Geosciences In the solid earth, its surface waters, oceans and atmosphere are found the prototypes of materials and processes that shape the universe. Man ' s existence is tied to the earth and the solar system; yet, he has much to learn about the constitution and processes of his seemingly familiar surroundings. The several departments in the College of Geosciences have a common interest in the infinite variety of problems which characterize the earth ' s environment and man ' s adaptation to it. Although a certain amount of laboratory work is performed, most of the study must be concerned with uncontrolled natural processes in which the complexity of multiple interacting forces adds to the difficulty, but at the same time to the pleasure of discovering the true facts. The College of Geosciences is participating in the teaching and research associated with these inter¬ esting developments. 22

College of Engineering Engineering has been an integral part of the curriculum at A AA for almost 90 years. A typical engineer¬ ing student at A AA may work on a fission problem utilizing an atomic reactor, study guidance systems for space vehicles, or pore over the principles of a beautiful bridge. The College of Engineering occupies 14 buildings on the campus and is ranked among the highest degree-granting schools of engineering in the United States. Guided by a distinguished faculty of engineers, students have the latest Training and research equip¬ ment available for their use. Some of the facilities—$6 million Cylotron, the $4.5 million Data Proces¬ sing Center, the one-megawatt Nuclear Science Center and the Activation Analysis Laboratory—cannot be equalled on any campus in the Southwest . . . Three state research and extension education agencies with headquarters on the A AA campus are closely associated with the College of Engineering and add stature to its instructional program. The three: the Texas Engineering Experimental Station, a basic and applied research center; the Texas En¬ gineering Extension Service, which disseminates new technology to industry, and the Texas Transporta¬ tion Institute, a planning and development organization concerned primarily with highways. 21

College of Liberal Arts The College of Liberal Arts offers programs leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees. Its primary purpose is to offer the breadth of education necessary for the development of the educated man. The college believes it can accomplish its goal if it requires a proficiency in the use of English, a study of significant broad fields of human knowledge, and the acquisition of a thorough command of one specific subject of knowledge. Generally, the student enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts pursues introductory work in fundamen¬ tal subjects for his first two years to enable him to attain experience and breadth of view so that he may take a more intelligent part in his own further education. During the last two years the student selects a major field of study and appropriate electives. The College of Liberal Arts offers three undergraduate degrees; Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Business Administration. 23
