College of Agriculture The study of agriculture has been a mainstay of the curriculum at A AA since the school was opened in 1876. As a land-grant institution, A AA has offered agricultural instruction, extension and research for almost 90 years and has been instrumental in the introduction of many techniques to the state ' s food-producing industry. Preparation at A AA opens the door to more than 500 occupations in nine major areas of agriculture: research, industry, business, education, communications, conservation, services, farming and ranching. Physical facilities for study are among the best in the country. Facilities include the 5,000-acre main campus, a 3,000-acre plantation in nearby Burleson County, and Texas Agricultural Experiment Stations across the state which total 40,000 acres. Two major affiliates with the College of Agriculture provide invaluable assistance. The Texas Agricul¬ tural Experiment Station and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service work in close cooperation with Texas A AA to foster research and extension education. Since many agriculture professors combine teach¬ ing with research, students are assured of learning the latest development in the field. 20

College of Engineering Engineering has been an integral part of the curriculum at A AA for almost 90 years. A typical engineer¬ ing student at A AA may work on a fission problem utilizing an atomic reactor, study guidance systems for space vehicles, or pore over the principles of a beautiful bridge. The College of Engineering occupies 14 buildings on the campus and is ranked among the highest degree-granting schools of engineering in the United States. Guided by a distinguished faculty of engineers, students have the latest Training and research equip¬ ment available for their use. Some of the facilities—$6 million Cylotron, the $4.5 million Data Proces¬ sing Center, the one-megawatt Nuclear Science Center and the Activation Analysis Laboratory—cannot be equalled on any campus in the Southwest . . . Three state research and extension education agencies with headquarters on the A AA campus are closely associated with the College of Engineering and add stature to its instructional program. The three: the Texas Engineering Experimental Station, a basic and applied research center; the Texas En¬ gineering Extension Service, which disseminates new technology to industry, and the Texas Transporta¬ tion Institute, a planning and development organization concerned primarily with highways. 21
