■»§! i SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING What is an engineer? He is a man who is applying science ... a man who has the understanding and appreciation for the physical laws of the universe . . . and is using his knowledge to raise the standards of liv¬ ing for mankind. Symbolic of the modern engineer are the electronic devices he uses to design more accurately, to test to a more infinite degree, to build with greater strength and reliability the multitude of projects— from bridges to space capsules—he is called upon to create. The School of Engineering at Texas A M College helps mold such men. But it takes talent to create talent and that is role of a dedicated faculty so vital in teaching young men to become engi¬ neers. Such a person is Professor Charles W. Crawford who for 43 years has contri¬ buted his talents to helping thousands of young men on their road to becoming en¬ gineers. A member of the A M College of Texas Class of 1919, he joined the faculty that fall, later earned an M.S. degree in mechanical engineering, and was named head of the Mechanical En¬ gineering department in 1929. In 1957 he became Associate Dean of Engineer¬ ing. This year he retires from that post, but will remain on campus to teach mechanics—the course where some thou¬ sands of Texas A M engineers have come to know Prof Crawford. This year the School of Engineering continued to grow in what is becoming known as the Space Age. It was a spon¬ sor of the International Conference on Activation Analysis. It put into operation the multi-million dollar Nuclear Science Center. This fall the aeronautical engineer¬ ing department will officially become the Department of Aerospace Engineering. Much progress has also been seen in the fields of chemical, civil, electrical, geological, mechanical, nuclear, and pe¬ troleum engineering, and in geology and geophysics, architecture, industrial educa¬ tion and industrial engineering. Within all its areas, the Texas A M School of Engi¬ neering will continue to lead in the new era of technology that is our nation ' s destiny. wmmm
