Rochelle stands by as John Orr, corps executive, welcomes Audie Murphy. WEEKENDS... are always welcomed and some cram-packed with activities. Such was the case when Audie Murphy, General Vaughn, Vaughn Monroe, and the Vanity Fair winners took A. and M. for a weekend in March. LIFE took the weekend, too. The life of a Texas Aggie on any weekend is usually a good coverage, but there were few others that compared with the one LIFE covered.

That ' s Martha Davenport on the left. Would you believe she was Loyd ' s sister? LIFE showed good taste. The Cadet Corp is good photograph material . . . even Fish Joe Doakes on the back row, who ' s picture also appeared in LIFE.

4 And when the One Great Scorer Comes to write against your name. He marks not that you won or lost. But how you played the game. GRANTLAND RICE The beginning of that eventful day. The tower that night didn ' t shine as bright as many t.u. students had desired it to shine. SPORTS • • • demand top attention at Aggieland. And the athletic teams were given excellent support by the Twelfth Man this past year. When the breaks didn ' t go our way, and they didn ' t for some time, the spirit still remained high. The Aggie football team wasn ' t jinxed on Turkey day and as a result a winless year was made brighter. The bas¬ ketball season was disappoining, but the track and base¬ ball teams provided a grande finale for the athletic year, as the conference crown was for the third straight year successfully defended by the thinly clad tracksters and the unheralded baseballers finished second to Texas, later named NCAA baseball champions. Athletic Andy . . sorta deactivated. 10
