• ♦ 4 1 U 4- A.2 °1 4 v • X IHHTIHEVIDIDHTIIIIT Today as the men of this nation and those of her allies are returning from the most devastating war ever waged iT M is again returning to her post as one of the nation ' s best schools. Returning Aggies notice many changes in the old Aggieland they knew for the war alters everything. We who have been here through the war have struggled hard to keep the old traditions alive in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Many times have we played Silver Taps mentally for our buddies who gave their lives. It is with a heavy heart that we realize many an Aggie will never return to his beloved Aggieland. The LONGHORN staff has tried to capture in this book a part of Aggieland to be taken with you wherever you may go. It is our wish that it may bring you many enjoyable hours. I wish to express my gratitude to the Senior class for electing me the Editor of this annual, an honor I shall always cherish, and to my splendid staff for their untiring efforts. R. B. MacCALLUM 8 i THE COLLEGE You top a rise in the highway and there it is before you, spread out over the green Texas hills. There ' s something about the scene, something about these buildings—some old and small, some new and huge— that grips you and makes you stop and look with a feeling of pride. Here, you know, exists a way of life, a way of learn¬ ing, a way of living with your fellow men that has molded the youth of Texas for 70 years and has sent them out into the world as good, strong, self-reliant men. Here, you know, live the traditions that bind a man to this place with an affection that never dims, no matter where he goes no matter how long he is away. This, you know, is one of the most loved spots on earth. This is Texas JT. M. This is the beloved Rggieland. Twice our nation has been the deciding factor in these conflicts by the unstinted sacrifice of our citizens, by the use of our mechanical ingenuity and productive capacities, and above all, by the desire to preserve the American way of life. The sons of A. 6c M. have played their part gloriously in these conflicts and if the victory that was won at such a great price is to be preserved, they must play their part in the world of today and tomorrow just as gloriously in a leadership which will make such conflicts unnecessary. I know that the members of the Senior Class of 1947 realize the problems we all face if our hopes for the future are to be achieved. My wish for the members of this class is that each will dedicate his every effort to the achievement of peace with the hope that the era which we now face may be the greatest in human advancement and happiness that the world has ever known. Sincerely yours, Jhe Kurd oj? j£)irectord THE WELFARE of the students of A M College rests in the hands of members of the Board of Directors, whose actions have indicated that they have this responsibility fore¬ most in their minds. The rapid growth of the student body has brought about many problems since the end of the war, and the Board has met this growth with expansion of college facilities and has solved all accompanying problems to the best interest of the students. The members of the Board are appointed by the Governor for six year terms. They are: G. R. White, Brady, President; H. L. Kokernot, Jr., Alpine, Vice President; Major General H. J. Brees, San Antonio; Lt. Colonel D. S. Buchanan, Corpus Christi; E. W. Harrison, South Bend; Rufus R. Peeples, Tehuacana; John W. Newton, Beaumont; Roy C. He will be trim and straight. He will be self-assured, and he will look you in the eye. He will be polite. His greeting will be sincere and he will make you feel welcome. He will speak of his school with great pride in his voice. No matter how young he might be, he will be a man. And then you will know the meaning of the saying that A. 6c M. is a school for some boys but not for others. ☆ ' m ' , ☆ You walk about the campus and you meet others like this youth. And soon you have the feeling that you are among people who know where they are going, people to whom life is not a problem but a game to be played hard and fairly according to the proper rules, and always with regard for the other fellow—people who are sincere. Walking among these youths, you think of the A. 6c M. men you have known. You think of the ones who were your companions during the war. You think of their annual Aggie Musters, held in shattered villages in Europe, on lonely desolate islands in the Pacific, in the hot, steaming jungles. You remember the reverence and the love that was in their voices when they spoke of this place among the Texas hills. You look at the youths there today and you know it will always be like that. You know that in those halls, along the shady walks and on the sunbaked drill fields they are absorbing good and useful things that will stay with them as long as they live. ... You know what they mean when they say Once an Aggie always an Aggie. JIM CARROLL Houston Press 32 NIO H c Cl Off, a 56 icer5 Robert L. Give me your attention, Freshmen! Up and at ' em 1946 iVk v;. ACTIVITIES In the fall an Aggie ' s thoughts turn to thoughts of football and corps trips to Baton Rouge, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Remember those nights spent in the lobby of the Texas, Rice and Austin hotels. Perhaps you were lucky enough to get a couch, if not you had a comfortable stone floor to sleep on. At midnight yell practice the streets of the town rang with those old Aggie Yells as you and your little woman humped it with hundreds of other Aggies and their dates. Remember how you strutted down the streets of Austin on parade, dodging the eggs and calcareous missies the teasippers threw at you. That afternoon your heart was alternately in your throat and in your boots (if you had any) as the battling Aggie team fought their hearts out for you on the gridiron. That night football was not foremost in your mind as you and your girl went to the football dance, going through the gyrations of jitterbugging or swaying slowly to the inimitable music of the Aggieland Orchestra. In the spring a young man ' s fancy turns to thoughts of love. It ' s funny how an Aggie calendar has 12 spring months. But in the spring of a regular calendar Aggie activities center around the campus. One of the most im¬ portant events of every Aggie ' s life is his Senior Ring dance. Here the Seniors and their dates enjoy the pause that refreshes in the ring. The juniors spruce up for their banquet and prom. The most loved class of all, the Sophomores, have a weekend to frolic in with their Sophomore Ball. One day you wonder if A. M. is co-ed. Around you are so many beautiful girls. No, A. 6c M. is not co-ed, no you ' re not dreaming, it is the Freshman Ball. It is the freshmen ' s time to romp and stomp while the upperclassmen have a weekend to lick their chops. At Christmas you braved pneumonia to sing Christmas carols and perform a masterpiece of Shakespearean drama, the Christmas play, at the Company party. The outstanding linemen on the field that day was guard Grant Darnell who kept the Baylor offense through the line bottled up tight all afternoon, and who stole the ball from Baylor back Jim Kimbrough to gallop 30 yards for a touchdown. Rob Goode scored the remaining touchdowns for A M by heading around left end as Bill Geer took out Jim Kimbrough of Baylor in a spectacular play. The Bears scored their initial touchdown late in the second period on an intercepted pass gathered in by Baylor back Pierce, who then proceeded to run down the side lines 41 yards to cross the Aggie goal line. Those fighting Aggies, however, came through with a third quarter touchdown in just one minute and twenty seconds after the half-time intermission with Rob Goode going the final 21 yards. The other two A M markers were Grant Darnell ' s touchdown and Goode ' s last six pointer chalked up from the Baylor 19 yard line. Baylor scored last but their efforts came too late for the Aggies had 19 points which was enough to insure the victory. BOB BUTCHOFSKY GRANT DARNELL NORTON HIGGINS ROB GOODE 212 d lAJ iite J3 ow 6 to cjC. S. ' Ll. The L.S.U. Tigers led by Jim Cason, Red Knight, and Bill Tittle managed to overpower the Aggies on the night of October 13 in Baton Rouge to win the game 31-12. Most of the Tiger touchdowns were made on long runs by the above named players who had things their way during the greater portion of the game. In the first quarter the Aggies clicked for gain after gain as the L.S.U. line was torn to bits by Goode, Smith, and Butchofsky. Big Rob Goode went over left guard for the initial score of the game after Higgins had recovered a Tiger fumble on their 33 yard line. A M ' s other touchdown came late in the third quarter when Dan Foldberg intercepted Tittle ' s pass and returned it 46 yards to pay dirt, but the game was over for the Farmers long before that as L.S.U. had roundly outplayed the spirited and fight¬ ing Aggies whose play brought words of praise from Tiger fans. Credit must be given to Scooter Yeargain for his play at end and Grant Darnell for his performance at guard position. Monte Moncrief earned much praise for his vicious line play which helped him attain his tackle position on the ALL AMERICAN team selected by the American Football Coaches Association. 213 ylrLanAaA l ofifed lyfinder fildcicliLne 34-0 When the final whistle had sounded in Fayetteville, Arkansas, a sad homecoming crowd of Porker followers filed quietly from their stadium for the Aggies had literally walked off with a 34-0 victory. This win en¬ hanced A M ' s chances for a championship, giving them one defeat and two wins, and put them in a deadlock with Texas and T.C.U. in the Conference running. BILL GEER STUBBY MATTHEWS SCOOTER YEARGAIN ART ABRAHAM Bud Canada, a Porker back, had trouble holding on to the ball and as a result helped to place the Aggies in advantageous positions during the first quarter. The Maroon and White touchdown twins, Goode and Smith, together scored 18 points before the game was 9 min¬ utes old. Preston Smith went over from the Arkansas 7 yard line and Goode made the second and fourth touchdowns with runs on 27 and 6 yards respectively. However, Smith ' s 74 yard return of an Arkansas punt in the first quarter was a grand example of the type of football that will bring the spectators to their feet. The last counter was made by the very reliable Stubby Matthews from the Arkansas 4 yard line. Two pleasant surprises were wel¬ comed by the Aggie followers as John Ballen- tine kicked four of five extra points and Bill Engle, a new man in the A M lineup, filled ailing Captain Butchofsky ' s shoes admirably. 214 CU Out 6-0 Uictonj Ouer arm erS AcSeM looked like the winner by roundly outplaying the Rice Owls in their Houston stadium November 17, but evidently the presence of Rdmiral Halsey that day must have given them stage fright because a Rice pass caught by end Jack Mc¬ Bride outside the Aggie secondary was good for 6 points and a victory for the Feathered Flock. The Farm¬ ers scored, but the ever present officials ruled no touchdown claim¬ ing that the ball caught over the goal line by Rob Goode was dead because it had previously touched Aggie end Dan Foldberg. However, the worst break of all was the in¬ jury suffered by Tom Daniel in the second quarter, the bullet-passing quarterback broke his right wrist, keeping him out of play for the remainder of the season, along with Captain Bob Butchofsky who had pre¬ viously received a kidney injury during a practice session. Too much empasis cannot be placed on the play of lineman James Winkler, Hub Ellis, and Norton Higgins for they helped to keep the Maroon and White Team on the threshold of the Owl goal line all afternoon. Both offensively and defensively the Aggies tore the Rice line to pieces, but Lady Luck looked toward the Rice team and handed them their sweet victory. JOHN BALLENTINE BILL YEOMAN DAN FOLDBERG o oners d3ejlore Acjcjie OnS Iczuyht 19-14 Iks? fdnZ Cashing in on three expensive O.U. fumbles the Texas Aggies gained a 19-14 verdict over the Sooner lads on Owen Field in Nor¬ man, Oklahoma, after a hard fought battle which saw Oklahoma come from behind to take the lead 14-13 only to relinquish that lead to the College Station boys because of their last costly bobble. Bob Butchofsky covered the first Sooner fumble on their 21 yard stripe during the first play of the game. A few minutes later, Rob Goode then slipped through a nice hole set up by his teammates for the first A M touchdown. The game was strictly an Aggie affair until the Sooner boys, led by backs Venable and Hawkins, switched from the T to the single wing formation and proceeded to eat up yardage toward the Maroon and White goal line. Rob Goode, who scored all three touchdowns, fancy runner Pee Wee Smith, center Hub Ellis, and fumble grabbers Charley Yeargain and Bob Butchofsky, were bad medi¬ cine to the Oklahoma defenders all afternoon. The game in figures explains the Aggie victory as the Maroon and White held the upper hand in nearly every department; although, as a whole the teams were evenly matched. LILLARD HART BILL ENGLE _____ jt- ower J own .1 s.w.y. 3-0 On November 10 football fans saw Rob Goode run 51 yards down Kyle Field turf to the S.M.U. 17 yard line where fohn Ballentine promptly sent the ball through the up-rights for 3 points which stood up for the remainder of the game and handed the Aggies another conference vic¬ tory. The kicking of Red Maley and Doak Walker kept the cadets on the defense most of the game and well in their own territory as only once did the Farmers cross the Mustang 25 yard line. Offensively the Aggies played their worst game of the sea¬ son, but the whole Maroon and White team will be remembered that afternoon for their determina¬ tion to keep the S.M.U. team from crossing the double stripe as one Mustang threat after another was staved off. The visitors ' only serious threat came late in the third quarter when they brought the ball to the Aggie 14 yard line before losing it on downs; how¬ ever, they were constantly in possession of the ball in the danger zone between the Aggie 30 and 15 yard lines. As for outstanding players on the field that day none can come close to the defensive game which Bill Geer displayed at his end position. Fte was bad medicine to the Mus¬ tangs all afternoon as time and again he would smear their ball carriers far behind the line of scrimmage. The Maroon and White victory was hard for S.M.U. to bear, but the Aggie team has had to swallow a defeat such as that more than once on the football field and Lady Luck must have realized that fact by sending the Mustangs home on the short end of the score. DEAN DENTON BULLET GRAY BILL HART Z lylpAetA 13-12 After a sluggish start which saw the Maroon and White nearly run out of Fort Worth the Aggies came roaring back to score two touchdowns only to lose a heartbreaker, 13-12, to T.C.LJ. before a packed stadium of 25,000. Only seven minutes of the final half had elapsed before the Maroon and White had counted two touchdowns and found them¬ selves within one point of the surprising Frog¬ gies, who, until that time, held the upper hand because of costly A M fumbles. Bob Butchofsky, who played heads-up football all that day, carried the ball after scooping up a T.C.U. fumble and went 32 yards for the second Aggie touchdown. Bob got plenty of much needed interference from versatile James Winkler and guard Grant Darnell. The Aggies held a decided advantage and would have won the game had it not been for fumbles that occurred in the very shadow of the Purple and White goal line. Winkler and Dickey were demons on defense, and pile drivers on offense as time and again they cleared the way for Aggie backs. The victory by T.C.U. was a hard pill to swallow and would have ruined a good corps had it not been for those everlasting and true T.S.C.W. girls who helped bolster the boys ' morale by coming en-masse from Denton for the game. . r 54, I -as 6SgMfig. Following true to form with past Thanksgiving Day performances, each team played inspired football which saw the Aggies take the lead late in the third guarter only to have the lead erased in the last quarter after a cruel break that enabled the Orange and White to carry off a 20-10 decision. Gene Johnson, the find of the game, made a sparkling run which set up A M ' s only touchdown on one play. Monte Moncrief was on the ground along with another unidenti¬ fied Aggie as they tried vainly to take out Billie Jo Baumgardner and Hubert Bechtol who stopped Gene on the 10 yard line. John Ballentine ' s third quarter field goal put A. M. out in front 10-7, but heads-up play on the part of Charlie Tatom, a Texas end, who pounced on a free ball within the very shadows of the TOMMY MURNflNE Student Manager . Texas Univer¬ sity came to College Station on Wed¬ nesday, February 5, only to leave that night on the short end of a 50-44 score, and Arkansas made the long trip to DeWare Field House later in the sea¬ son losing the first of a two game HOMOR ADAMS JAMIE DAWSON 228 DON MACE HUGH WEBER BILL TOWNSEND series to the Farmers by a narrow one point margin 56-55. The surprising Baylor Bears won the Southwest Conference championship with a single defeat handed them by the Porkers from Fayetteville, but the Maroon and White Aggies held Baylor to close scores in both games played this season with the first contest settled in an overtime period. Co-captain and all conference player Jamie Dawson led the Aggie team both in points and ability closing his basketball career with a banner year. Ball hawk Bill Yeo¬ man, Peck Vass, Don Mace, and co-captain Homer Adams will long be remembered for their hustling brand of play which helped to class the 1946 Texas A. M. baseball team of 1945 was a cellar dwelling team which managed to break into the win column but twice throughout the season. Southwestern U. and S.M.U. were the two diamond teams which had to be satisfied with an Aggie victory. As was expected the Aggies played their best conference game of the season against Texas University but dropped the game 4-3. Against the Waco A.A.F. major league stars the Farmer dia- mondmen truly played like champions, holding the Waco nine on even terms 232 for eight innings but losing the contest 4-1. 1945 found the Maroon and White nine lacking experience in almost every department with but two return¬ ing lettermen, thus explaining the dif¬ ficulty encountered when playing such skilled baseball nines as the Waco 14.A.F. aggregation. Shortstop Stubby Matthews, catch¬ er Grant Darnell, first baseman George Strickhausen, and left fielder Floyd DeLafosse were the oustanding play¬ ers on Pete Jones ' squad helping to class the Aggies as a dangerous threat to any team no matter how great the odds. DELAFOSSE SCHUFORD THORNTON LINDSEY 233 194 (f udeLali f reuiew The Aggie Nine got the 1946 diamond season off to a roaring start by slugging out two victories over Southwestern University. In these two games, which served as the season ' s openers, the Aggies displayed wonderful ability and the promise of a good chance toward obtaining the Conference title. The second team to meet the Aggie on¬ slaught was Luke Field of Arizona, which on the 22 and 23 of March clashed with the Aggies in a two game series that saw the Dimmitmen bat the horsehide all around the lot to take both games by heavy margins. Serving as sparkplugs for the team in both games were hurlers Johnny Shuffor, Hub Moon, and Earl Beesley with Edwin Arnold and Billy Hartley hiding behind the catcher ' s mask to signal for the right kind of throw. Predicting the champion of this year ' s Southwest Conference is hardly permissible this early in the season; however, it is safe to say that with able men like Thornton, Pressly, Lindloff, Vass, Matthews, and Willingham on the team the Aggies will certainly have their bid in for a position at the top of the list when the season closes. 234 TRACK TRRCK COACH ANDERSON And ews Beard, G. In the remaining seven they placed second. Lil Dimmit led the team through this fine season which was climaxed by the Southwest Confer¬ ence meet in Dallas, May 11 and 12, which saw A. When considering the age and experi¬ ence of those fighting Aggies who com¬ posed the 1945 track squad, the season as a whole can be termed very successful. The 1946 track season has just begun with coach Frank Anderson at the helm. The first post war edition of trackmen at Aggieland have shown promise by already taking second place in the Laredo Border Olympics, fourth place in the Ft. Worth Stock Show competition, and first place in a triangular meet with Rice and Baylor. Leaders thus far in the point making department have been long distance man Johnny Ziegler, high jumper A. B. Haws, and quarter-miler A. H. Hamden. M. swimming team to win the conference championship, but the 1945 aggregation did just that in the Texas U. Gregory Gym¬ nasium pool on April 16 by a close 84-80 score. On this particular Monday afternoon members of the swimming team such as high point man Tom Syfan, free styler M. S. Escobar, diving expert Alvaro Facio, 440 specialist Allen Self reached a goal that no other Maroon and White team has ever accomplished. Texas University had carried off decisions from the Aggie tank team for the past eleven years, but a determined web footed outfit from College Station brought home a champion¬ ship, turning over a new leaf in swimming records. SWIMMING TEAM 1st Row: lohn Heeman, Dick Baugh, Puddgy Armstrong, Jack Riley, Allen Self, Manuel Escobar, Dick Whitely. 2nd Row: Tom Syfan, Tom Portele, Paul Webster, Walters, Bill Geer, Dick Lea, Jimmy Gains, Art Adamson (Coach). 3rd Row: Jim Clark, Jimmy Thomas, A1 Facio, Earner, A. Fierro, Jack Moss, Buss Sawyer. TEnms The 1945 Aggie tennis team directed by the able Tommy Penn worked hard to earn what honors they could achieve. The team led by Memo Elizondo, Jimmy Killebrew, Boots Gilbert, and Bob Huston, lost decisions to the Rice Owls, Texas Longhorns, and T.C.U. Horned Frogs. However, the loss to T.C.U. was avenged later by an Aggie victory over the Froggies which was a prelude to the Conference meet held May 12 when A. M. took third place. The Moroon and White netmen didn ' t compile a great record on the concrete courts but the same fight and spirit was recognized in their efforts to win as has been shown by past Aggie tennis teams. Naylor New to the campus but proving himself old at the game of marksmanship, Captain J. C. Wolfe of the Coast Artillery Corps took over this year ' s rifle team, coaching them to a number of victories. First to put the Aggie Sharpshooters to the test was Henderson State Teachers Col¬ lege of Arkansas, which challenged A. S M., only to lose the match 1838 to 1599. As the season progressed, however, the triggersqueezers found themselves confronted by more trying opponents. The first taste of defeat came to the College Station squad when they conceded to the United States Coast Guard; however, bull ' s-eyes felt the hot lead of Aggie rifles again during the meet with Montana State University which ended in a victory for the Aggies. During the latter part of the 1945-46 season luck seemed to be against the Aggies, for during this time the Farmers found themselves dropping two matches—one to the University of Pittsburgh and another to West Point. The most competitive of the two matches, however, proved to be that with West Point, in which the scores were very close. The gentlemen from north of the Mason Dixon Line managed to outsight the Texans, but only by a narrow margin. Faced with keen competition throughout the season the Aggies nevertheless proved themselves able handlers of firearms and had a very successful season. 250 Arriving at Fort Worth Lee makes some brew The heat ' s on!! During war years, Texas demonstrated its industrial capacity and capability when its industries fulfilled $6,418,810,000 worth of war con¬ tracts involving the production of planes and parts, explosives, synthetic rubber, steel, magnesium, gasoline, oil, and a long list of other materials and supplies requir¬ ing skilled labor. During the war years, Texas’ industrial production rose from $450,000,000 an¬ nually to two and one-half times that amount on war contracts alone. This has resulted in expansion of plant facilities and labor force, and peace-time plans which call for even greater industrial production than during the war. As rapidly as building materials and machinery be¬ come available, Texas cities and towns are witnessing the building of new and the expansion of existing fac¬ tories and shops. Texas has everything needed by and for industry ... an abundance and diversity of raw materials and natural resources for convert¬ ing into manufactured products, mild cli¬ mate, excellent transportation facilities, highly intelligent and easily trained native labor . . . and abundant cheap electric power. Furthermore, Texas is the gateway to the Latin Americas, whether by land, by sea or by air. By the processes of reconversion and by wise and careful planning, Texans are determined to make the most of their state’s vast resources. Texas Power Light Company, a pio¬ neer Texas institution, joins all of Texas in inviting the immediate attention of American indus¬ trialists to the opportunities offered by the Lone Star State. As abundant, dependable and low-cost electric power from TP L transmission lines was a vital factor in producing for the war, so is it now in producing for peace. This Company’s industrial-minded manpower, as well as its vast power facilities, are at the disposal of those seeking to develop new or to expand existing in¬ dustrial opportunities in Texas. R. Cmmel DRUGGIST Bryan Texas 306 This is it—that last chance that we have awaited for so long, to say what ' s on our minds. Somehow, the words that we had stored up to say don ' t seem just right—now. The things that flood up in our minds are the little things, the ones that we have been taking for granted ever since our freshman year —the bull sessions in our holes, Reveille frolicking in front of the band, yell practice at midnight, formal reviews and meal formations, thumbing it on those weekend Corps trips, and the moonlight on Sully ' s statue. So maybe these are the big things after all. When you analyze it care¬ fully, it was the little things that taught us some of the biggest lessons. Maybe that accounts for the peculiar tenacity of the Aggie traditions. Maybe there is something more than a time-honored custom in the way an Aggie shakes hands, and in the way a Fish is taught to say Howdy. Maybe there is something more in the Twelfth Man tradition, bigger than the will to beat T. U. These traditions are the precious heritage that we are passing on to you, OT Army. We know that they are the parts that add up to the Spirit of Aggieland. We don ' t believe that it ' s necessary to charge you here with the responsibility of keeping them alive, because we know that consciously or subconsciously, you have already acquired the instinct of preserving them. So let us suggest, instead, that you do not wait until your Commence¬ ment Day to find out what makes the Aggie tradition all that it is. We be¬ lieve that this understanding is the final step in the process of becoming an Aggie and entitling you to full-fledged membership in the worldwide Aggie brotherhood. So it ' s all yours now, Ol ' Army. Sully is yours; Kyle Field is yours; Military Walks is all yours. And so is Silver Taps, the Twelfth Man—and the Spirit of Aggieland. Take care of them. The skill and ambition with which these tools are used determine largely, the achieve¬ ments of the individual. Electric power also is a tool. It multiplies the muscle power of a worker, giving him the ability to do with ease in an hour what would require hundreds of hours by hand. It enables him to produce more and to earn more. The brain power of free, educated people, plus the electric power which has been provided so abundantly by America’s electric power companies, is one reason why we enjoy by far the highest living standard in the world.
