'G , 'grill I v , f of x Our freshman class was petrified On that September day, But then we learned to our surprise That We were on our way. That freshman year time did not march It literally flew! But when vacation rolled around, We were not very blue. Vacation came and went too fastg It really seemed too short. When We returned as sophomores, More knowledge here we sought. We danced at all the high school hopsg We had some fun indeed. And all the time we gathered up The knowledge we would need. The junior year was almost throughg We counted every day. We planned and plotted to miss school But crime does never pay. We waited for the day to come When seniors We would beg Vacation went so very slow It irritated me. The day we waited for did comeg We were Seniors at last! We had been molded for three yearsg This was the final cast. This was the last and final year, The time for our big fling. The undergrads, and teachers, too, Did treat us all like kings. We buckled down and set our sightsg There was no time to shirk. We had to Choose, this final year What would be our life's work. When we look back upon those years When undergrads were we, We thought when graduation came How happy we would be. But now that graduation's near, From here we soon will partg The ending of the final scene Does hurt deep in our heart. We'll miss our pals, and teachers, too And though we go astray, The memories of T. H. S. Will never fade away. FREDERICK WELCH CLASS HISTORY Tramp! Tramp! Tramp! Seventy eight freshmen entered Tewksbury High School in 1951. Although the building and the changing of classes weren't new to us, we were certainly excited that we had finally become freshmen. Our class advisors who greeted us were Mrs. Stevens and Mr. Leiter. We welcomed in our freshman year a new superintendent of schools, Mr. Thomas L. Rivard. Also during two new grammar schools. Our first class meeting was for the year we watched the building of the purpose of electing our class officers. We elected Mary Ann Shea, president, John Kelly, vice-presidentg Robert Sullivan, secretary, and Jo Basile, treasurer. This was the time when the Rinehart Handwriting System was in- troduced. Once a month they checked our progress in forming our letters and numbers correctly. Hurray for the girls' basketball team! They won the Suburban Championship and also came out on top in the Littleton Tournament. Somehow we slipped into our second year of high school after strug- gling through final exams, and our sophomore officers were Louis Marion, president, Tommy Aspell, vice president, Kay Hunt, secretaryg and Jo Basile, treasurer. The Student Council representatives were Louis Marion, J o Basile and Kay Hunt, To our surprise we saw some Mr. Oliver, and Mr. Smith joined the The Republicans returned by president. Yes, we had reached our next to last year before we knew it. This year our class decided to be different. Four good, strong males were elected as class officers. Rae Sutherland was chosen as president, Tommy Aspell as vice president, Jimmy Doherty as secretary, and Jimmy Riddle as treasurer. As our four representatives to the Student Council, we chose Rae Sutherland, Kay Hunt, Jo Basile, and Tommy Aspell. A new sport was started at T.H.S. - field hockey. Many girls signed up for this extra curricular activity and soon were in full swing out on the athletic field. Kay Hunt, Mary Ann Shea, and Jan Donahue were among the football cheerleading staff and Jan was elected to cheer our basketball games on to victory, also. The two dances were successful. The February Frolic was extra special because it featured music by George Emmons. Everybody had a good time at this affair. Our second dance was the Spring Delight . Wow! E Seniors! ! Could it be possible? We started the year off with election of officers. Jimmy Doherty was elected as president, Mary Ann Shea as vice-president, Jimmy Farley as secretary, and Jo Basile as treasurer. Jimmy Doherty, Mary Ann Shea, Kay Hunt, and Jo Basile were our Student Council members. Lindy Gleason and Jan Donahue became our basketball cheerleaders. As I was watching a football game, I noticed many things. Out in the corner of the field there seemed to be something missing. Then I realized that the score board was no longer there. In the bleachers, I saw many peo- ple dressed in uniform. Could this be the Tewksbury band and baton twirl- ers? Sure enough during the half they did an excellent job of entertaining the fans. Kay Hunt, Mary Ann Shea, Jan Donahue, and Liz Kelly led the crowd in cheering as Tommy Aspell, the captain, led the team. Our boys' basketball team participated in the Townsend Tournament and our girls' team fought hard in the Littleton Tournament. We had three dances this year, the Kickoff was held in September, the December dance featured Al Mitchell, and a dance was held April 15, 1955. Soon final exams were over and we were rushing through Senior Week. Our banquet was held on June seventh and we went to Provincetown on June eighth. As we made our last trip down the Halls of Ivy on June tenth, we thought of the many happy and rewarding years that we had spent at Tewks- bury High School. CAROL SHERWOOD CLASS PROPHECY As I sit here looking through my trunk of high school treasures, I can't help thinking of the old gang back in Tewksbury. We had so many good times together. I really collected a lot of things in four years. There's my old 1951 basketball jacket, and here are some football programs along with all my letters and pictures from the kids. I guess I have a little time to reminisce a bit. Man, some of these pictures are funny! There's Pat Lawlor, our '55 basketball captain, with Louie Marion in their Wedding picture. They sure- ly msake a nice couple. I understand that Louie is now building hen houses for Bill Gath's Wide-Open Chicken Farm. It's supposed to be the biggest farm in Tewksbury. Let's see . . . Here's a letter from Jo Basile, Tewksbury's fa- vorite telephone operator. She's keeping those lines busy and also says that Audrey Bernard has been teaching Chemistry at Cornell University for three years and that Carol Sherwood is a famed concert pianist and plays second fiddle to none but Liberace .... Mandy Sands is the slick dancing partner of Jimmy Riddle who tries to teach the latest dance steps. He took lessons from John Denehy. Ah! Wedding pictures! Now that I recall, I attended five weddings in 1956. Connie Vistola and Nancy Stevenson had the loveliest double wed- ding. Barbara Conley married a paratrooper, and is now the secretary of the Governor of Massachusetts, Dave Hinckley. Let's see .. . Jan Donahue, Mary Ann Shea and Marion Ryan also married that year. I can never forget the year 1963. That was the year that Eleanor Bar- relle and I made a tour of Europe. We have kept in close touch lately tif you call once a year closeb and she is now Jerry Lewis's Bean-Bag dancing partner. Yes, we surely had a wonderful trip. We met so many interesting people on our trip. In Paris we bumped into Wally Cumings who is a well- known French designer of women's hats. At the Paladium we saw the pre- views of Judy Hewitt's latest picture, A Star Is Born . We looked up Tina Zorba when we got to Greece and found out that we were just in time to see her TV program, Ding Dong School. Everyone calls her the Miss Frances of Greece .... And we also met Dick Silk. He's the smallest weight-lifter in Spain. tHe lifts the smallest weightsl Nancy Collins and Paul McCoy were sitting by the Dead Sea wondering who killed it. Just as we were step- ping out of our hotel, Mel Quimby tore by us in his stream-lined Cadillac . . . I had to look again .... red with yellow stripes. He said that he designed it himself. Oh! You haven't lived until you-ve gone to Italy to Gub the Dub's restaurant, owned by none other than Fred Welch. His specialty is hot Pizza with that extra special touch of Mel Garlick .... That really was some trip we took, and it would be a lot of fun to do it again .... Here are some interesting newspaper clippings from the Tewksbury Gazette owned by Jerry Jackson. Betty Kelly hit the headlines for being on Betty Crocker's TV show for winning a 325,000 cake contest with her most original strawberry upside down cake. People are getting paid for dropping cakes now-a-days .... Norman Cleghorn was nominated the best doctor of the year of '59 with Barbara Karner as his favorite medical secretary. Kenny Fisher and Dave Garside have become famous for their Fishside Fixit Shop. They can fix anything from a cracked nutshell to a broken heart. Carl Ebinger is trying to sell his Ford. What a deal! 3310 and he'll tow it to your door. Oh! Here's a letter I received from Kay Hunt postmarked Haunty- ville, Texas. She invited me to spend a week or two on her ranch, the Rock- ing 22. Incidentally, she struck another oil well when she was out digging for gold. Some people have all the luck! She also said that Jimmy Farley was on his way down to big old Texas to see if everything is really big and old. Barbara Travis stars on Jackie Gleason's show, advertising that new pepsodent smile .... Barbara O'Connell beat all records by swimming the English Channel in zero hours .... Pat Marsh and Al Reardon have become known as Americas second Les Paul and Mary Ford .... Eveline Ebert and Liz Lewandowski are in the foam rubber cushion business. Their slogan is Let's protect the seat of our nation . I got another catalogue not too long ago from the Elevated Shoe fac- tory that was built in Tewksbury. Franklin White and Don Peavey are the owners and Roger Daly spends most of his time advertising for them .... Carol Sennett and Ethel Hill have opened up a Tea Shop on Fifth Avenue in New York .... Richie Starling is making the Navy his career .... Bob Sullivan and Charlie Buffum have put in their order for a chain of glass gas stations across the country. Gee .... We have a whole new Celtics team, starring Bud Sharpshoot- er Aspell, Bob Barron, Slap Jack Kelly, Rae Forbes Sutherland, and Jim Cousy Doherty. None have changed except Forbsy who took over Ed McCauley's place on the team. Their motto is Always up and Never in . They also have a mascot, Warren Bulldog Carlson, along with four cute cheerleaders, Marion Jasilewicz, Ruth Cormier, Lindy Gleason and Florence Richards. Everyone calls them the excelling Celterettes. Oh! The time. I have exactly eight minutes to catch the Pasedena bus. Back go the pictures . . . the letters . . . Bang goes the cover as I lock up all my happy thoughts of Tewksbury High. I just can't be late! I can't forget my little darlings for a single minute. I can't bear the thought of finding my room full of paper airplanes and a black board covered with drawings of a typical fourth grade teacher. Utter pandernonium .... Where are my coat and hat, my books . . . here comes the bus. So long.
