P - ll ' ,1, But thele IQ bound to be a rub some place and this rub is in his studies Why he finds that in order to begln to prepaie his lessons he must study at least two whole hours every day on every subiect Then he goes to class to be bombaided with questions which only Solomon and maybe not he could answer Public school may have been all right but lt didn t teach Pleshle to think fol himself Now what does the F1 eshman think of h1mself '7'7 FATE The sun was casting its first rays upon the fast turning leaves and the whlte hats of the mountain peaks It gave the first warnlng of the coming of wlnter A large sleek black furred animal wobbled from his den in the moun tain side stretched himself and w1th a look of wonder at the beautlful picture that Jack Frost had painted the night before set out in search of food He knew he must find plenty of food to quench his enormous hun ger as winter would soon take him in hand He must den up and call upon the surplus he should have stored in his large body As he traveled back and forth through the many colored bushes he bitten berries The old bear was not satisfied he was looking for a meal in one killing As he walked into a grove of quaking asps a sweet scent came to his nostrils and a glorious sight to his eyes He saw a fairly large animal one showmg a good meal in itself His first impulse was to kill He sprang forward with the quickness of a cat and with a loud roar flung his weight upon the helpless animal In answer to the c1y vhich reached the ears of the little animal a vast armour of quills stood out The old bear struck but not with the flerceness he had intended The old bear let out a roar of pain and fled into the bushes He tried in valn to iemove the needles that filled his nose and paws but all he could do was to break a few of them oft For three weeks the old bear suffered flndlng scarcely enough food to keep h1m alive Thus winter took him into her clutches and on a bleak December day a lone wolf sang the bear s death song from a small mound near the bear s den On the same morning that the old bear set out in search of food V1 young college graduate set out in search of work 1n the business district of New York City He was a tall handsome young chap and very ambi l'l'l l' U W XV ll , S 1 L uk , . . . . , ...i...-0,311.1 i . , , , . . . - X 7 ' I 7 , . . . . , found two or three mice, a small bush rabbit, and many sweet juicy, frost .. 5 ' . , . ,1 .1 :xo 1 1 ON WTTH THE lFlRlESll-llMlEN' There 19 no one so well known so l1ttle lespected and so llttle sym pathlzed mth as the Hlgh School Fleshman Ex elyone knows h1m the m1nute he entels the hlgh school H1s helpless wandeungs oy 61 the bulld 1ng h1S lntense eagerness to do the ught thlng and hls bhnd groplng fol the knowledge whlch h1s fond parents expect h1m to IQCQIXG are well known to the sophomores uppel classmen and the faculty Each of these has h1s own op1n1on of Ye poor suffellng Frosh The Sophomore Wlth h1s grand alr of superlorlty and h1s b1g head 1s the Freshmens most notlceable cr1t1c Accordlng to hls polnt of vlew the Freshman IS not a h1gh school student but merely an mfant v1s1tor meandermg around The upper classmen have a somewhat d1fferent oplnlon of h1m They are condescendmgly sympathetlc regardlng h1m Wlth an almost paternal a1r They treat h1m almost as a fathel would h1S son g1v1ng h1m a wee b1t of good advlce whenever they happen to th1nk of It Aslde from that the Freshman hardly 9XlStS for them If asked who a certam young person IS whom they dont know they w1ll no doubt respond Dunno Some Freshman prob ly' Usually IH thls way all unknown persons are ClaSS1f16d as Frosh especlally lf they seem the least blt unsophlstlcated The faculty pay more attent1on to the Freshman e1the1 because they have to slnce he always reglsters m thelr classes or because they hke chlldren For the Freshmans m1nd 19 st1ll ln short trousexs even though h1s legs are more craftlly concealed The prof as a lule doesn t g1V6 them credlt for knowlng much He reallzes that the avel age Fresh man IS 1ust out of publlc school IH Wh1Ch 1nst1tut1on he respected hlS teachers and thelr ldeas Therefore he does not bother about the danger of havmg hls ldeas attacked and he glV9S them freely to the Frosh by means of awe msp1rmg l1ttle speeches takmg It for granted that they w1ll be absorbed But how about the rest of the faculty?
