l' H XX' VN' H W COMMERCTAL DEPARTMENT The commercial department of Teton County High School was es tabllshed IH 1920 with an enrollment of six students In the fall of 1924 the number of students electing the commeiclal coui se had 1nc1 eased to a total of th11ty membels It is a two 5ear course intended pumarily for those students who do not expect to attend a higher 1I'l9lIltLlt101'l of learn mg and who need to go to vsork as soon as then high school education s completed For that reason such students should plan the11 work oi entering high school so that they may take up all the commercial sub1ects offered in the Junior and sen1o1 years Seniors are dlscouraged from en rolllng in this course The subiects taught are shorthand typevsiitlng peiiods of eighty mmutes daily Secretaiial tiainmg or office piactlce lS corielated with the teaching of both shoithand and typewuting The time has long since passed when a commeicial education was considered purely vocational It partakes of the cultuial natuie as tiulv as does the study of English oi a foreign language In addition to this it combmes an element lacking 111 the study of a language 16 that of the quick automatic iesponse to the stimulus of spoken words which comes in the piocess of taking dictation We may confidently look foiwaid to the time when educational authoiitie in 1ll iecognize shorthand as a lan guage study w1th a xalue quite apart hom its xocational nature a specltlc coiielated xalue in helping to establish bcttei usage of lun fllsh .
