NATllONAlL HONOR SOCHETY In every first class high school there are clubs and soc1et1es of mam kinds If rightly guided and directed these may be a wonderful incentne to develop the powers of the 1nd1x idual members Each may have its badge or insignia The members mav receive public recognition for som exceptional piece of work or for taking part in some competitive QXGICISG The members of the athletic debating and other teams mav ieceue then lettels before the school and have their names appear in the headlines o the dally papers Those interested in literary society or 1n ITILISIC com before the school and public on many occasions These and othei activities are worthy of the plac they occupy in the l1fe of the school These often assist 111 relating pupils to real con d1t1OHS in life Of course there IS a danger of floundering in a sea of heterogeneous smatterings Many pupils seem to make school duties secondary in importance Th1S 1s wrong Many pupils actually say You never heard of the honor pupil after he leaves school Again this 19 wrong The honor graduates of our high schools and colleges are f1ll1ng five to 13 an easy method of preparation for life s duties The successful athlete must have his days of training of pieparatlon for the contest The same is true of the muslcian artist lawyer doctor or of any other successful person We must serve as apprentices before we can become masters The purpose of the National Honor Society IS to create an enthusi asm for scholarship to stimulate a desire to render service to promote leadership and to develop character in the students of American second ary schools There is no honor conferred by the school that excels that represent ed by this soclety It represents the fundamental objectives for which schools are instituted and gives recognition to those who have attained most nearly the desired ends Other honors at the disposal of the school are only partial ln the sense that they recognize specialized ability skill or talent but this society looks upon education as a total product measured by the four dlmenslons of life Throughout history man has recoffnlfefl the value of such d1st1nct1on and in one vsav or another has marked tm special honor those who excel The Const1tut1on of this national organization recognizes foul cam dlnal ob1ectnes as the fundamental in all educational plactice Scholal ship Character Leadersh1p and Seruce To esalt these obyectnes and l'l'v l' H W - W H W , I I ! .
